Through four years we have labored and finally convinced the faculty that we are pre- tentious and an intelligent group. Miss Craper and Mr. Weaver were the sponsors of our freshman class. We started our year off wisely by selecting the following officers: President, Donald Elpersg Vice President, Harold Gwaltney: Secretary, Mary Lou Bordersg Treasurer, Bernadine Mclntire. f Basketball queen attendants were Millie Meny and Ruth Rexing. Mary Lou Borders and Harold Gwaltney represented us at the Oompah. The summer months flew by and our second year in good old F. B. H. S. was about to start. Betty Beadle and Ruth Rexing were our contribution to the yell leaders in this year. As attendants to the basketball queen we had Marjorie Lou Gray and Bernadine Mc- lntire. Oompah candidates were Donald Elpers and Millie Meny. Those elected as officers were: President, Jack Boreng Vice President, James Barrett: Secretary and Treasurer, Aline Mcllree. With half of our high school education past we anxiously waited our junior year. As befalls every Junior class we returned to school with the task of raising funds for the Junior and Senior Prom. We gave our class play, "A Credit To The Family." Millie Meny was elected yell leader to let our class have the honor of hlaving three yell leaders. Harold Gwaltney made a name for himself in basketball by being the leading scorer of the county. This year Roberta Reeves and Lois Riddle were our basketball attendants and Kenneth Jackson and Eleanor Douglas were crowned King and Queen at the Oompah. Our leaders this year were: President, Donald Wallace: Vice President, Eleanor Douglasg Secretary, Lois Riddleg Treasurer, Donald Elpersg Reporter, Millie Meny. The great event of this year was the Prom which concluded our junior year. In September of '47 we found ourselves climbing the last steps of our high school career. Our year started with Ray Williamson and Wanda Silkey being elected as Compah King and Queen. Roberta Reeves was chosen basketball queen with Mary Lou Borders and Ruby Hamilton as her attendants. Work was begun on the Benedictus with Mrs. Brown and Mr. Williamson as our supervisors. Class officers for this year were: President, Alan Hickrodg Vice President, Harold Gwaltney: Secretary, Kenneth Jacksong - Treasurer, Donald Elpersg Reporter, Donald Wallace. As we close our high school career we, the class of '48 look to the future, hoping that our lives may be happy and successful ones. glass roplzecy Fort Branch, Indiana May 8, 1958 Mr. Carol Heldt, President Standard Oil Company New York 20, New York Dear Carol: Well, after ten years in Brazil as a buyer for the Standard Oil Com- pany I have returned to Fort Branch, the scene of your happy school days. You 'd be surprised how it has changed. Tl1e first thing I noticed as I stepped off the train was a beautiful new depot. I was so astounded that I thought I had made a mistake. As the red-cap approached I saw that it was none other than ALAN HICKROD, our former classmate. Alan showed me around the building and told me that the plans were drawn by JAMES BARRETT, now an architect and construction was under the supervision of ROBERT LOCKHART, a famous engineer. After leaving Alan, I was struck by the brilliance of a large neon sign reading "LOGAN'S". Upon entering, I discovered a beautiful night-club on the site of McCormick's Cafe owned by our classmate ROBERT NEUFELDER. Bob told me that he is happily married to RUBY HAMILTON. Star performers in his Hoor show include MILLIE MENY, LOIS RIDDLE, WANDA SILKEY and ALINE McILREE. After leaving Logan 's I passed a news-stand' and instantly stopped because the clerk was KENNETH ROMERSHAUSEN. Romeo told me the news of many of our rural classmates. NORMAN THOMPSON and ARNOLD MICHEL are 11ow world-famous hybred corn raisers. KENNETH WEBER, married an Evansville girl, and is a large stock man. He supplies live stock to the Elper's Packing Company, successors to Emge's, and of course the president is DONALD ELPERS. JEAN ROHL entered nurses training and plans to make a career of it. FLOYD SILKEY has left the farm and now has a famous hill-billy band. His chief songstress is BETTY BEADLE. Included in the floor show are JACK BOREN, EDDIE BALES and BOB SIDES, as the "Three Terrific Terrifying Tumblers." I bought a paper and began glancing through it as I headed for a look at the old school. One article headed "Mayor of Somerville Be- comes Fatherf' interested me when I discovered the mayor's wife is RUTH REXING, of course you know the mayor. Another article an- nounced that DON IVALLACE, now a doctor is setting up practice in Fort Branch. Don is a confirmed bachelor and raises dogs for a hobby. In the entertainment section I saw an announcement of a professional basketball game. The line-up included RAY WILLIAMSON, KEN- NETH JACKSON and HAROLD GWALTNEY. The Metropolitan Opera House is featuring MARY ANN BAYER, pianist and NORMA BOYLE, soloist. In the advertisement section I noticed the Snack Bar with PHYLLIS FOUGNIES REED and JEAN REED FOUGNIES as proprietors. Kruse's Beauty Shoppe is owned and operated by BETTY KRUSE. I closed my newspaper and headed into the old school, now a mag- nificent building. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that VIOLA IWEISS is principal, MARY ANN BLOCK is an English teacher and BERNADINE MCINTIRE is teaching science. As I entered the Home Economics Department I found the teacher is ELEAN OR DOUGLAS. Eleanor and I entered into conversation and I found that she was teaching until a certain person returns from Brazil and pops the ques- tion. She told me that EVELYN SCHUESSLER, ROBERTA REEVES, PIIYLLIS WOODS a11d ROVELLA CARTER are happily married and proud mothers. She said that MARJORIE LOU GRAY and MARY LOU BORDERS are touring the country as professional tennis stars. JACK McCAR'TY is VVorld's Champion IVrestler and his sister .PAULINE MCCARTY is a famous ballet dancer. If you 've been as starved for news of your old classmates as I have for the last ten years in Brazil, I know you'll welcome this letter. I hope you 'll understand when I ask you to accept my resignation. I've found my class mates so happy that I never wa11t to leave them again and I also have to make up for those lost years with a certain Home Economics teacher. Good luck and best wishes. GRADUATION DAY When asked how I feel about graduation day, I'd like to tell you In my own little way. Struggle we did We forty-three, Along with joy And a mite of glee. From the first to the twelfth We battled on, To study each night 'Til break of dawn. We had themes to write And test to take, Tables to make Cakes to bake. We read, we spoke As speakers came, We often were late With sleep to blame. Teacher's didn't understand Were they always so dumb? How did it happen, And if so, how come? The lessons were too hard To ever be done, And We fussed in Of all the fun. spite We did have fun You must agree, I with you And you with me. -Ray Williamson. f oeif 5 owfzrer GOODBYE I Goodbye old school, we hate to go Our time alas has come, We had our chance to do alright But now we feel real dumb. We weep for leaving Mr. Weaver . And Mrs. Elpers too, And sob aloud for Mrs. Brown, What else is there to do. We'll dream about the principal Mr. Doerner and Mr. West, He travels home by going north Go west, young man, go west. We have kind thoughts of Walker And the other teachers too, Will some one wipe away our tears, While we try to say adieu. Now the time has come to go The Juniors take our place, Wide open spaces, here we come To meet you face to face. -Pauline McCarty. THE ANNUAL We've been very busy Busy as a bee, Working on this annual For you to read and see. Of course it isn't perfect, Not quite exact to letter, But never will you find One that's any better. -Ray Williamson. ON A POLITICIAN Here, richly, with ridiculous display, The Politician's corpse was laid away, While all of his acquaintance sneered and slanged I wept: for I had longed to see him hanged. I oei 5 FINAL GRADE In school the youth is graded on, His answers right or wrong, In sports a lot depends upon His being weak or strong. And later on when he begins To earn his daily bread His score is one that always win If he can keep his head. He gets his rating from his loss Aocording to the way The profit overcomes the loss Through out his working day. But more important to his name Is how he leads his life And whether he can gather fame And stay away from strife, His mark is not the bright or dim That money represents But whether friends repose in him Their faith and confidence. -Don Hill. OVW67' ENGLISH LITERATURE A warning to the Sophomores To all that want to hear Never take English Literature When you come again next year. Not that I'm against it Nor dislike it in anyway It' just the subject matter That greets you every day. When it comes to Chaucer And the Canterbery Tales You start pulling your hair And chewing off your nails. -Don Hill. HIC Said Aristotle unto Plato "Have another sweet potato?" Said Plato unto Aristotle, "Thank you, I prefer the bottle TWENTY MINUTES Here I sit serving out my time, Just waiting for the bell to chime, But do I regret it, I guess not, For twenty minutes is all I got. All I said was one little word That no other person could ever have heard, But here I set amidst my sorr OW, For I'll be here again tomorrow. -Don Hill.
