I am the FORTRESS, Throughout the years I have captured on my pages all the trials and tribulations of yesterday. Today, as my friends, the Seniors of 1970, anxiously await their graduation when they will leave me in search of tomorrow, I find myself recalling those awkward years they spent growing up. In September, 1958, they experienced school life for the first'time. On that day, all were a bit shy except two little boys who found certain pleasure in being the first to get the seats of their pants warmed. Now, of course, they are sophisticated men and women of the world, but I can still see them as skinny, knock-kneed, elephant-eared, darling little brats! In those days, they knew nothing of the ugliness that exists in the modern world. The walls around their sheltered little worlds would crumble with the mere mention of skinned knees, measles, black eyes, tests, or the health nurse. They found joy in simple things like daily baseball games and fighting over whose team cheated the most. They might not have hit many homeruns, but they sure could break those windows! Then they grew up ... all the way to Junior High School! They were much too old then for such childish things as book satchels, lunch boxes, snow boots, and hair barrettes, But even so, they still had their major catastrophes to contend with such as Phys. Ed. class, tardy marks, science projects, pop quizzes, initiations, and lost basketball games. There were small scale wars such as girl vs. girl over boy, boy vs. coach over girl, or the adminis- tration vs, the student body over menus, short skirts, long hair, candy wrap- pers, and pop bottles! Although these years were tormented by frustrations, they provided many good times and first experiences so characteristic of the nature of youth. There were class trips, State Tournaments, first date jitters, class plays, chemistry class(!), friendly faculty members, first loves, class rings, Proms, their yearbook, and last but not least, their graduation ... David, Sherry, Debbie, Sandra, and Debby. Eddie, Valerie, Mike, Kenny, Steve W., Melvin, and Alan. Yeah gang! ... This is it! But let's not forget perhaps the most important part of their growing up... Mom and Dad. I wonder how they must feel now. Oh! They're proud all right ... That's my kid up there! and all that stuff. But I know that they feel much more. I am a kind of a parent myself. There is a certain mixed feeling of emptiness, sadness, joy, and pride left behind each graduating class that haunts the halls of F.A.H.S. Parents must experience a similar feeling as they realize that their child has become a young adult, fresh and determined to go out and conquer the world. The class of 1970 has grown up. They have asked me to extend their appreciation to all who have helped them throughout the past twelve years. To the Mothers and Fathers of the world, may I lend a bit of reassurance ... They will always be, if only in fond memory, your spoiled little brats with skinned knees, chocolate faces, and muddy feet. Well, friends, you must go now. Once again I must remain behind. There is nothing more I can do for you. The future is in your hands, I only hope that you might take me with you in your hearts and minds wherever you may go in life. Someone once said, No matter how far or how fast you go, remember the beginning was here! Just remember that I'll always be here if you ever need me. Go on now ... Git! I sure hope that you are ready for a lot of action, world, because the Seniors of 1970 are about to turn you upside down!! They are young, fresh, determined, and enthusiastic. They deserve the best, so be good to them. You must now make important decisions that may affect your entire future, Throughout the past few years, your parents, your faculty advisors, and I have tried to prepare you for this time so that you might be able to meet life face to face and make wise and careful decisions, I hope that we have done our jobs well, : At this point in your lives, you are probably experiencing times of doubt and confusion, In these trying times of conflict, corruption, and violence, many young people allow themselves to be swayed by the voices of those who tend to speak the loudest but say the least. You must be ; strong and patient. Listen to each and all, Then make your own decisions and live by them, Be individuals, ; William Shakespeare once said, ‘‘All the world’s a stage and each must play a part.” I often think that he was tight. Choose your role wisely. McDonald Heads '71 Staff... Early in the spring members of the Junior class filed their applications for positions on the FORTRESS Staff. Afterlong and hard debates the 1970 advisory board selected the new staff members. The queen was then crowned by Mr. J. W. Marker, principal. Debby then danced the queen's dance with her escort, Barry Knotts. This verse, which covered one entire end of the gymna- sium, told the story of the coming of the ‘‘new world.’’ It was quite appropriate because the Seniors are about to go out and try to help that ‘new world’’ along the way; the dance is always held in honor of the Seniors. The decorations were splendid and set the scene for a night long to be remembered by all who were there. The Seniors wish to express their appreciation for a job-well-done. Thank you, Juniors. The National Honor Society initiated 1971 members into the organization in a formal ceremony performed in front of the student body, the faculty, and parents. The new members are: Janice Heavner, Jamie Morris, Charles Dere- _Ier, Terry Bradfield, Glenna Ours, Mike Kuykendall, Diana Hartman, Barbara Crone, Diane Kimble, Mike Morris, Robin Dohrman, Brenda Beam, Richard Raines, and Joyce Heavner. They were selected for outstanding scholarship, leadership, character, and service. After a long wait and a lot of hard work, the FORT- RESS Staff finally presented their cherished volumes - FORTRESS '70 - to the faculty and anxious student body. Everyone seemed to think that the yearbook was super . We hope that you think as much of this summer supplement. 1970 Senior Class Night! Lorrinda Rizer and Ted Bennett of radio station W-K-O-R-N provided several laughs and a few raised eyebrows with their skit. It was allin fun, folks! Really! The show, formed around the popular television show, “ Hee-Haw , was planned and performed by the Seniors. The gang cut loose with country songs and country korn . While the Seniors frolicked in the hay, the folks in the audience rolled on the floor with laughter. The class wills and prophecies were revealed. They closed their show with a serious mes- sage by singing the songs A Time For Us and What is a Youth? from ROMEO AND JULIET. Then they said good-bye to one and all and not-so-merrily went on their way to be graduated on June 10th. The Seniors presented nonsensical tokens to the faculty, the staff, and to their long-time classmates. Golden Horseshoe Winners, Jeri Welsh and Mary Williams. They’ve gone to meet that world and to talk to it, hoping that they can possibly change a few things .-. at least try to improve some things ... somewhere .., some- time:...:. On Commencement night, the faces of the new graduates showed mixed emotions, Some laughed and some were rather serious. There were those who appeared numb, as if in a state of shock, probably unable to completely accept the fact that they had “‘finally made it!’’ Others cried bitter-sweet tears of ones who have had so much and yet are bound by fate to have so much more, Some were nervous and a bit hesitant, worried about what the future might hold. A few bit their lips and grimaced later from the painin futile attempts to hold back the tears and to settle the queasy feeling in the bottom of their stomachs, . Some were rewarded for their deeds-well-done, and, as usual, some were not. Nevertheless, there are rewards yet to be re- ceived by many, The greatest rewards and pleasures will be found by those who find great beauty in the simple things in life - like children, nature, and the brotherhood of man. The greatest reward on earth is life itself, isn’t it? ... Tomorrow will come today. Today will become yesterday. Yesterday will, in memory, dim, But, ah! Look, ye, to the hilltops!
