Our teacher is Miss Etta Dunn. She is teaching us our A B C’s and how to write our names. Wayne Fertig sucks his thumb every day, and Miss Etta has decided to get him a bottle and nipple. There are twins, Nina and Tina Kimble, in our class. Future Class of ’49 1938-39 Dear Diary, Our second grade teacher is Miss Elizabeth Stemple. Helen Funk is a new student. Irene Kimble and Melvin Newlon have fallen quite hard for each other. He has learned to write her notes, and believe it or not, diary, all of us can read them. Future Class of ’49 1939-40 Dear Diary, Third graders now. Miss Virginia Bolen is teaching us to be healthy, and each month the winning row in the contest receives a prize. Little Dottie Twigg is our new student this year. We are having an operetta this year. Our high school building, which had been under construction, is ready for us although we were in it only two weeks. Future Class of ’49 1940-41 Dear Diary, We are now “Big Wheels” in a four room school. Miss Mary Ellen Beckman started to paddle Mike Malone yesterday, but he jumped out the window and ran up town. Future Class of 49 1941-42 Dear Diary, This is our fifth year of learning. Miss Wimer received a broken arm while coming to school. Jo Ann Sandbower, Jean Marker, and Tommy Davis have skipped a grade and have now joined us. Victor Long has come to us from Pattersons Creek School this year. We moved into the High School Building this school term. Future Class of ’49 1942-43 Dear Diary, Our big thrill came today. We are to our half way mark. Again we are presenting an operetta and an “Information Please” program in as- sembly. Evelyn Lease is a new student and Mrs. Evelyn Pownell is a new teacher this year. We are going to have a student council. Future Class of ’49 1943-44 Dear Diary, This is a thrill for us because we are in the seventh grade and we are members of Fort Ashby High School. It makes us feel big to be able to change classes. We have quite a few new members this year: Doris Householder, Dolores Lark, Maynard Davis, Ray Elder, Bud Dyer, Alan Whitacre, and Danny Whitacre. Miss Swecker is our home room teacher. Betty Evans gave us all a scare several days ago when she was doing some high jumping in Physical Education. Victor Long and Tommy Davis went before the student council for chasing Jo Ann Sandbower in the mud. Coach Simmoncelli is our adviser. We are presenting a class play, “Hands Up,” and Miss Penninah Goldsworthy, our English teacher, is directing it. Irene Kimble and Joe Ambrose were surprised the other day when they received the American Legion Medal of Merit for Citizenship. Phyllis Sampson has now joined our ranks. And now we have another broken leg! Jack Smith received it while wrestling with Donald Pownall yesterday. When we heard a scream everyone ran to see the results. There we found Jean Marker pulling Virginia Lechliter’s hair over a “puppy love” affair with Jack mith. Future Class of ’49 1945-46 Dear Diary, We are glad to be with Mrs. Olen Marks. Carl Davis joined us. We are selling cup cakes to buy some library books for the school. Doris Householder is nicknamed “Bugs.” Future Class of 49 1946-47 Dear Diary, Darell Boatman has come to us this year from Keyser High School. Charles Ornduff is also a new student from Southern High, Baltimore, Md. Both of these boys are active in sports. Mr. Thomas Small, our new Physical Education Teacher, is with us now. Jean Marker and Irene Kimble are our class cheerleaders. We decided to publish the Falashbian. Future Class of 49 1947-48 Dear Diary, We are proud to be juniors now. Our class play is “Handle With Care.”” Several of our class members had leading parts in our operetta, “Grande Ole Switzerland.” Everyone has fun making money for our Jun- ior-Senior Prom and banquet. Miss Dorothy Haines and Mr. Thomas Small are our advisers. Erma Welch has been added to our cheerleaders this year. Several of the boys and girls are on the basketball team. And oh my! Another broken bone! It is Darell Boatman this time. He was playing football. One day we found Doris Householder in the rest room sobbing, because she discovered Eldridge Leatherman was moving away. Future Class of “49 1948-49 Dear Diary, _ Twenty-six enrolled in our final year, but Jimmy Livengood ceased his struggle. Victor Long is our president; Helen Funk, vice-president; Dorothy Rinker, secretary; Dottie Twigg, treasurer; and Irene Kimble, reporter. Miss Helen Pownall is our Home Room Teacher. We are pre- senting “Neath a Dixie Moon” and several of our group are taking part in the operetta. Helen Funk is manager and scorekeeper; Victor Long, timekeeper; and Tommy Davis, manager for the basketball teams. And now, Dear Diary, as we close the pages of our final entry of our high School career, we wish that all those coming on might experience our Joys and successes and have as much fun as we have had in our struggle for education. The youngest member of the Senior Class Is full of jokes, and tricks, and fun; Now, Danny is learning to step on the gas; As a mimic he’ll win a place in the sun. A tall handsome lad whom we all adore Arranges stage settings and carves wood by hand; Harry Lee’s charm attracts girls by the score And his jeep’s always ready at their command. We have in our midst a slender youth Who has helped with the yearbook, school paper, and plays; He can sing, he can play; is a student in truth. As a surgeon our Victor will serve future days. Car] has attended so many schools He can scarcely decide what he wants to do; He has already proved he can farm by the rules And shows skill as an orator and editor, too. Helen is always a perfect dear, As reporter at games she tends strictly to duty; Her voice is so sweet and her smile so sincere, No wonder she was crowned Our Queen of Beauty. Evelyn Lease is a tall slender student Who does her school tasks with a friendly smile; She enjoys a good joke and shows that are prudent, With her kindness she lightens many a mile. Darell is lively, friendly and clever, The athletes all know his true worth, He’s a bundle of joy who is joking forever And he’ll spread his good cheer to the ends of the earth. Though Nina is always the first on the roll And Tina comes next according to Hoyle, We never will know which is which for their goal Is a healthy enjoyment of our seeming turmoil. The other Kimble whom we know as Irene Holds a very choice place in our hearts For she’s always ready and on the scene When we need her to play in elderly parts. A Home Ec. student is Phyllis Sampson Who helps with whatever work is at hand; She will always work hard ‘till the day is done And her service will constantly be in demand. Alan is planning a college career, His manner is friendly and often times gay; As a minister his mission will be sincere For he always insists on fair play. We often wonder if time affords If Tommy could perfect his comedy roles; But his aim is, we learn, to serve medical words Where he’ll bring relief to suffering souls. Our graceful young cheerleader known as Jean Excels in plays and clubs and classes; Her business skill can be plainly seen For she exceeds all other lads and lasses. = OOS SESSSS - SESESEOESSE CDDPO SPO PEPOP 2 SSOP OD SPOS PSOSSCE FD OS SOS SOO PS SSS PSS SFSD 4) . 4 g x “ % + 4) x 4) $ § 4) . x4 ‘) “y x 4) % % % ‘ ‘ ‘S ‘ x x ‘ g x “ ‘ 4 : 3 4 ‘) 4) ¥ Class Poem SOSSSSSSSoSS Maynard is surely a lively young colt Who can never be found wh en he is needed; He finds excuses for all who revolt And can’t see why rules must be heeded. One of our boys from the farm is Ray Elder Who helps anyone who needs aid, he declares; Some day he may hire you as electric welder As he plans to build a shop for repairs. Dottie Twigg is our winsome young blonde Whose voice is sweet and tender and low; Her friendly manner and smile so fond Are a part of the magic her charms bestow. Dalvin is handsome and slender and tall, He can picture and carve out a thing of beauty; Though you never can prove that he’ll come when you call, He assures you he wouldn’t neglect his duty. Erma works hard at a task assigned, The strength of her will power is great; She often forgets what she had in mind When her choice student friend arrives late. Charles came to us from a neighboring state, He’s full of strange questions and curious notions; Sometimes he works hard and complains at his fate, It’s a “Cinch” he has captured one girl’s devotions. John Smith is a student who rates in his classes, He is busy with church work and 4-H and school; No one is ever surprised when he passes For he struggles to follow every rule. Twins are quite rare in Fort Ashby High, In fact we have never experienced a pair Who are so much alike, either one can reply To the other’s name, all the teachers declare. A quiet young lad is Buddy Dyer When he reads or is sleeping soundly at night; But the boys all know that his one desire Is to be in the midst of a winning fight. Doris Householder has a charm all her own, Her zeal for athletics is truly enthralling; She can work with a group or study alone And her quick wit will aid her, whatever her calling. The dark-eyed young lady we know as Dolores Has a pleasant smile that’s always charming; No manner what happens she’s rooting for us In a lively manner that is almost alarming. A willing helper is Dorothy Rinker Who never complains when there’s work to do; That’s why her teachers and classmates think her A trustworthy girl whose ideals ring true. Miss Helen Pownall Class Sponsor Class Prophecy CCPC OOD CPC OPEL SSPE ®CD CCCPCPEC CE CEP ODSEOROPPSDDEPEEEP PS °SSSS ESSE EEE Sepa I, one of the prospectors, have been asked to tell you something about the Goal Rush of ’49. I shall tell you what will happen to the ’49ers as we go toward our Goal Success. The future looked bright as we left the auditorium after graduation. Dorothy Rinker and Irene Kimble decided to leave us, in order to be married. Ah, yes, there's a ship sailing for a foreign port, and who is it’s cap- tain? Why, none other than our Darell Boatman. After many days over rough seas, Darell’s ship docks in South Africa. As the captain walks down the gang-plank, he is surprised to encounter Alan Whitacre who is now a well known missionary in the Belgium Congo. Alan informs the captain that one of his passengers on the return trip will be Bud Dyer, who has been on a big game hunt in Africa. Finally the ship again docks, but this time in New York. Here, Bud is met by Maynard Davis, who is now head of a large concern known as, “Buck’s Taxi-cab Service.”’ Buck’s motto is, “No trip too short or too long.” We will visit Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. We find it hasn’t taken Doctor Victor Long much time to reach the top. He is now a skilled and well known doctor. Doctor Long is surrounded by a group of nurses, two of whom are Jean Marker and Dottie Twigg. They are listening eagerly as he propounds to them the effect and theory of a brand new drug. This drug was discovered by Dr. Danny Whitacre, the world’s greatest scientiest since Einstein, and his able assistant Dr. Dal- vin Wagoner. Yes, dear classmates, Danny and Dalvin dicovered all too late a drug which will do your own thinking for you. Now, let us return closer home, and see what our ’49ers are doing. Fort Ashby has really grown-up since we last saw it. Many fine homes have been built, no doubt by a well-known carpenter, Harry Lee Cum- berledge, and contractor, “Tommie” Davis. Ray Elder, a prosperous farmer, now owns a large farm close the Dan’s Run District. I see we have a law office here in Fort Ashby, and of course the law- yer is none other than Carl Davis. He is assisted by his efficient secre- tary, Helen Funk, who stays late at night, “working,” she says. There is also a Central Telephone Exchange in Fort Ashby, with a number of telephone operators employed, one of whom is Tina Kimble, “but where is Nina,” we ask? Tina sighs and shows us a recent picture of Nina and a new set of twins. Let us now visit our “Ole Alma Mater.” We find many changes have been made, one of whom is a new coach. “Coach” Charles Ornduff is pre- paring to take his team to the University of Morgantown to play in the basketball finals. His wife (the former Erma Welch) will take over his Physical Education classes for the day. Two of our classmates, Phyllis Sampson and Evelyn Lease, are tak- ing over the school-lunch program in the cafeteria. We were able to attend a P. T. A. meeting while we were visiting. One of the main speakers of the evening was Jack Smith (who is presi- dent of the P. T. A.). He told of his experiences as an Agricultural Teach- er. Before we left, we visited Mr. Judy, and found Dolores Lark, acting as secretary to the principal. As I’m scheduled to go on duty at 11 p. m., I’ll have to leave you, and don my uniform. The lagles were seeded last in the event but as the conte. ts start and upsets happen the turnout was “all together different.” The Port Ashby quint advanced to the finals with a little luck in the drawing, a bye and a 39-30 shellacking of Elk Garden High School. The Eagles played the Remney Pieneers in the finals after the latter had losi_ a close deci ien te Wik Garden. But on the second of the three night event Rempey met a ceol-pleying Piedment school who had pre- viously knocked fi the highly favored Blackhawks of Ridgeley and thus establishing them:clves the new favorite. Fort Ashby lost the final which was a heart breaking 31-29 decision to the Pioneers. At the conclusion cf the tournament, John Dayton, the center, was honored by being placed on the all tournament team at a forward position with Don Maphis of Romney. Piedmont dominated the team by placing two on the mythical five, Gannon at center, and Smith at guard. Comer, Ridgeley guard, concluded the team.
