Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1945 volume:

Our forefathers fought and died at Valley Forge, Germantown and Brandywine to establish a Fortress which would defend our American ideals of Democracy. Since that time Americans have fought wars at home and abroad to protect these ideals. The Senior Class of 1945 dedicates this 3rd. yearbook, Fortreas to the Fort Ashby High boys who are striving in all parts of the world to preserve our homes, our rights, our freedom. Especially do we wish to inscribe in this dedication, the name of Winton Hershberger, our orasens ves D ys entered the Navy this year. sa) p { 4 Lg - ft Con mf co a [ ; a¢ ‘ HOD ILS DI fis Ley We yee HONOR 1941 Kenneth Malone-Marines Dimple Abe-Navy Nurse Junior Brelsford-Army Richard Broom-Navy Lynn Poland-Army Paul Borror Arny Lee Ward-Army Donald Ridgeley-aArny Harold Marker-Navy William elch-Navy Harrison Judy-Army John Wagoner-Army Andrew Beam-Arny Jack Snider-armny 1943 Vernon Yooflord-Army James Dowden-Marines Andrew Miller-Navy Blair Miller-Army Wayne Arnold-army kdward Neff-Arny Wayne Smith-Army Jack Welch-Army Fred Siple-Army James Long-Army Merle Abe-Navy ROLL 1944 Eugene Clayton-Marines Donald Bohrer-Navy Dale Welch-Navy 1945 Winton Hershberger-Navy Samuel Lechliter-Navy William Beaver-Navy Raleigh Chaney-Army James Fitchett-Army Gerald Null-Marines Paul 3eaver-Navy James Lewis-Army Donald Long-Army Thomas Sook-Army Henry Ross-Navy Neal Beam-Army Faculty Vernon Ellifritz-army John Pat Foley-Army Roy Watson Curry-Arny Gerald Menefee-Army Ruth Tonry-Yaves ate I bt dee i STH, 3 } ‘ tener a aes Le fee FG Z, fr rn Fe at etl eel se oe howe’ TE ee Oe A oe evo ” ct NAN. Ooche Flondie CLASS HISTORY In September 1933, three of the present seniors, Ella Mae Marker, Gene Welch, and Loy Lou Welch, meekly enrolled in Miss Etta Dunn's First Grade at the little white schoolhouse of Fort Ashby. The Second Grade Teacher, Miss Elizabeth Stemple, found the little group had grown to four, as Elaine Kimble, who had attended Davis in the first grade, joined them. But the class hadn't stopped growing yet, for Dale Beam, having attended one and one half years at Dan's Run, united with the others that year. : Swiftly go the years. The third grade still under the direction of Miss Stemple greeted Hazel Lewis who had attended the first and second @rade at Davis. The fourth graders found themselves with a new teacher, Miss Virginia Bolen. The clas¢ was very sorry that Elaine Kimble went to Fountain School the first half of the fourth grade, but she returned for the second half. The fifth grade under the direction of Miss Sarah Siple ran smoothly. Miss Juanita Roby prepared her sixth Grade pupils to enter Junior High School, When the doors swung open in September 1939, seventh graders were very plentiful. Mr. vernon Ellifritz, home room teacher, and Mr. R. R. Lowe, Principal, looked puzzled and after a hurried consultation, proceeded to di- vide the class into two sections; Mr. Ellifritz taking one sectional and Mr. Lowe the other. Violet Baldwin, having spent the first-half of the first Srade at the Abe School, the second-half of the first Grade, the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth Grades at Patterson's Creek, joined us. Norma Long, Clifford Kern, Calvin Davis, Marian Long, and Winton Hersh- berger, who had spent all their Elementary School days at Patterson's Creek, were received into the class. Also hailing from Patterson's Creek was Cleora Parrish, who having at- tended the first Grade inclusive at Patterson's Creek, fifth 6rade at Penn- Sylvania: and sixth grade at Patterson's Creek, added her petite self to our class. Quietly making his way through the door at the same time was Wilbur Dohrman, who had spent the first grade and two six weeks periods of the sec- ond grade at Patterson's Creek, and the rema the third and fourth Brades at Md. His fifth and sixth years Sreek with his old gang. Delores Starliper, afte r attending the first-half of the first year at Martinsburg, W. Va., the second-half of the first Grade, the second and third grades were Spent at Pennsylvania Avenue School. Not being able to resist, she spent her fourth, fifth and sixth Grades at Patterson's Creek, from which school she came to unite with us in the seventh Grade. Coming from Short Gap at the same time were Junior Powell, Jimmy Whit- acre, Lola Spencer, Zena Mae Brinkman, and Irene Blauch. Junior Powell spent the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth years at Short Gap before skipping the sixth grade and coming to Fort Ashby. Jimmy Whitacre was trained his first, second, and third Srades at Short His fourth grade work was done at Pennsylvania “Averme School, but he returned to Short Gap School for the fifth and sixth grades. Lola Spencer and Zena Brinkman, who had attended the first grade at Fairveiw, and the second to sixth grades inclusive at Short Gap School, were welcomed at Fort Ashby. ; Irene Blauch, spending her first to sixth grades inclusive at Short Gap School, united with all the others to make up our large seventh @rade. second half of the seventh Grade we found a new face in our It seems as though George Moyers, who had finished the first through the fifth grades at Petersburg, W. Va-., skipping the Sixth grade joined the seventh grade at Maysville before deciding to come to us. At the beginning of the eighth grade we found we had a charming, teacher, Miss Botty Jane Rehlmeyer, The same year Virginia Lee Pyles, who had spent three months of the first grade at Virginia Aveme, the remainder of her El- ementary School days at Johneon Heights, and her seventh grade at Fort Hill, decided to take her place with us. In the ninth- grade we had three home-room teachers, Mr. Gerald Menefee, Miss Helen Criner, and Miss Flora Sweoker. The tenth grade found us with Mr. Ralph Kittle as sponsor, while our Junior year.introduced us to Miss Peninnah Goldsworthy. Our Senior year, has been directed by Miss Helen Hannas Pownall, who has been Senior Class sponsor since F. H. S. was established. We note with a great deal of concern that many others who started with us have fallen by the way-side or left us for other schools. Briefly they are: Paul Beaver-Navy; Bill Beaver-Navy; Lula Weaver-Celanese; Daisy Al- dridge-Ureline Academy; Calvin Dayton-Farmwork; James Fitchett-Army; Burmice Wheeler-Celanese; Elizabeth Troutman=Celanese; Ava Kuykendall-Employment un- known; Mary Davis-Housework; Jeanette Shaffer Pyles-Parsons High School; Elmer Rader-State Road;.Mary Kuykendall-Employment unknown; Dorothy Robin- son-Housework; Lindberg Kimble-B 0; Edgar Golden-Farmwork; Samuel Lech- liter-Navy; Lawerance Weaver-Kelly; Georgia Lechliter-Woolworths; Ral- eigh Chaney Army; Paul Glaze-B O Railroad; James Lewis-Army; Max Willison- War Plant at Pearl Harbor; James Adame-Celanese; Gearld Null-Merchant Ma- rine; Helen Lease-Celanese; Marie Lease-Celanese; Hilda Starliper-Housewife; Marvin Logsdon-Kelly; Donald Long-Army; Naomi Martin-Baltimore, Md.; Lula Koontz-Employment unknown; Madeline Staggs-Yaitress at McCoole Resturant; Richard Decker-Wolfe Milling Company; Henry Ross-Navy; Thomas Cook-Armny3 ees po geben unknown; Macel Yokum-Kelly; and Theda Stelle-Keyser H School. The members of the Senior Class, being a Wartime group have said good- bye to one of the Senior boys, Winton Hershberger, as he went to join the Navy. To him we send the best of luck. ° We were first affected by Peace Time Conscription in 1941 when Mr. Ver- non Ellifritz left us, and again we felt the pain of parting when we said farewell to our home-room teacher, Mr. Gerald Menefee, and Mr. John Foley, our atheletic coach. Represented in our class are pupils who have Bone to fiftven schools. The Senior girl's mode of dressing is skirts, sweaters, anklets and loafers. The boys wear sport sweaters, open collars and slacks. Our class motto is Not for Ourselves Only, but for the “hole World, and our flower is the red rose bud. The senior class colors are red and white. The members of the faculty of '45 are: Miss Helen Hannas Pownall, Eng- lish and French; Mr. Paul GC. Rouzer, Principal; Miss Peninnah Goldsworthy, Commercial Studies and English; Miss Dorothy Haines, Home Economics and Bi- ology; Mrs. Laura Marks, Mathematics, Science and Algebra; Miss Flora Sweck- er, Sooial Sotence, and Mr. Benedict Simoncelli, Physical Education and Chemistry. With these facts concerning the history of the Seniors of '45 the class historian bids everyone a fond farewell and hopes that the olass of '46 will Graduate in a time of peace. MS Zena Mae Brinkman XE AS Xs As “ CIASS POE Fort Ashby High we leave your protection, With a feeling for you of the warmest affection, At the thought of leaving a sadness appears, For the joy you have given us through the years Far surpasses all the joy we know Wetll find in the future as we come and go. Each one of us will go his way, But our thoughts will travel day by day, Round the windim; road, to the top of the hill, Where we find a hearth welcome still. We enter in but alas, alack! We miss those faces when looking back, Of the friends we knew those few short years, We recall them each one----and here come the tears. The scene from the hilltop is really a treet, Very picturesque. A view so complete, When glancing upward, out the window, and then lookins The blue sky envelopes the minature town, And what is that waving so proudly above? It is what we fight for, honor, and love. Our country's banner aloft in the breeze, Combining its rythm with evergreen trees. In the halls and classrooms are many new faces, We realize that they have taken our places. Classes are taught and are sent avey, : Happiness should reign on Commencement Day, For tmt which we've long striven, to win, Has taught us We finish to begin. , ° We've studied these years to better prepare, For the road ahead and what lies out there, Our class motto has a challenge unfurled, Not for ourselves only, but for the whole world. It grieves us to leave our Alm Mater fair, To enter a world of greed and despair, But as we go forth into the fray, Whether at work or at our play, Let us bring honor to this our school, Our standard being The Golden Rule. The time has come we must be on our way, The class of '45 has this to say, A world of good luck and of happiness too, As we bid farewell------farewell to you! Loy Lou Welch CLASS PROPHECY In 1950 we will find Joe Powell established as head of a flourishing Department of Agriculture at Fort Ashby High. 1957 finds Virginia Lee Pyles already established as a modern, up to minute Primary school teacher, directing Wayne Arnold Junior in the myster- ies of the first grade in Fort Ashby Elementary School. In the same year Cleora Parrish can be found patiently counting out the measures as she teaches little Frances Junior his music lessons. In 1950 you will find Coach Simoncelli working as chemistry assistant to Calvin Davis. In 1947, Wilbur Dohrman will be seen flirting with the co-eds from West Virginia University. The year.1949 will find D. V. S. written over the doorway of the office where you will find Veterinarian Gene Welch carefully tending Miss Pownall's prize winning cats and dogs. Ahn! Loy Lou! Another trainee for the nursing profession. Now, now, Loy Lou! Cliff can't have his appendix out the second time. Five years after her graduation at Fort Ashby High,, Carolina Dowden is managing “The Patterson's Creek Dairy, the finest dairy farm this side of the Mississippi. Ah! Another-one in our midst who wants to be an Angel of Mercy. In 1950 we find Violet Baldwin Superintendent of Nurses at Memorial Hospital. Eleanor has a hard time keeping up with Hazel Lewis as she makes her trips around the country. Marian Long in 1946 is Head Cook and Bottle Washer at the Farmerette Camp near Baltimore. . We find Elaine Kimble in 1950 coaching her undefeated,, Super Do bas- ketball team. Winton Hershberger in 1948 seems to be having the time of his life in the Navy with a girl in every port. It 48 doubtful if “you will recognize this rather stout workman im 1950. You guessed it--for Dale Beam is still eating Peanut Clusters. Yeah! Team! Rah} Little Bobby Simoncelli made the basket that broke the tie in the Romney-Fort Ashby game. And Coach Clifford Kern met his .toys with open:arms. Norma Long is now Secretary to that certain Seaman Second Class now stationed at Washington-r-1950. Irene Blauch has heard the call and she is training to become a muree.s. Gould it be to take better care of Lewis? If you ever have a pain, stop in at’ Jimmie Whitacre's Pharmacy and he will be sure to have the medicine to relieve your ailmant. Whatia surprise! Here is a Wedding Announcement from Lola Spencer and Wayne--dated June 14,,1945. Yell, of all things: ‘we learn that Zena Mae Brinkman 4 waxing in all the New York Night Clubs with one of the handsome interns ..aom she met while in training. Dolly Starliper has us wondering! But in the crystal ball, I believe I see a small cottage, covered with ivy-and within-the patter of little feet on the stairs. As we are ushered through the corridors of John Hopkins we hear from the Inter-Communication System- Calling Dr. Moyers! Calling Dr. Moyers, and as a@ door opens, we turn to see part of the handsome face of George Moyers peeping through the mask of his surgical uniform. Ahi hat angelic melody: From what source could that be comins? It is the Mae Marker orchestra at the Stork Club. As we are traveling the Fort Ashby Highray, we see a sign, Five cal- lons for $1.05. “e stop to find a gas station owned by no other than Car- rie Sisk. . During the month of Lecember 1952 we will find Opal Riley M. D. scurry- ing from the operating room where she has just delivered a set of twins. Virginia Lee Pyles CLASS SONG MEMORY'S LANE In Memory's Lane we'll wander To Fort Ashby High so fair. We'll laugh and talk together, As friends we used to, there. we'll remember our dear old teachers, And the things we learned from each, While in Memory's Lane we'll see them With the students they used to teach. Someday we'll return to our school so dear, Our knowledge, a sweet refrain, Our gladness, our fun, in all the years, Will linger in Memory's Lane. Virginia Lee Pyles Fe BU SSS Dear Friend: There's been so much going on in the world this year, ‘s0 we will take this opportunity to catch our breath for a minute and take time to drop you a note to tell you how much we appreciate you as a friend and customer of this store. You have been very patient with our wartime service which for reasons beyond our control hasn't been what we want to give you. But we have tried to stay with quality merchan- dise even though we couldn't take care of your wants at all times. We want to thank you for putting up with us under these very trying conditions.
