Hardin-Simmons First Grade Seventh Grade F0ll1'th Grade No, H. G. Wells wouldn't think our history worth this sheet, but we're just normal seniors, not historians, so to us the record bears reading. . ' The only member of our class of '51 to enroll in 1940 was a plump little girl with blond pigtails named Betty .Lynn Oglesby, but two years later in the third grade she was joined by an energetic young man with cowlicks and freckles--Jimmie Shoults. The next year the class of '51 really began to get on its way, for Alma Rose Kennedy, Patsy McNallen, Bettie Calley, and Ewing Thorpe came along and livened up the atmos- phere. . A . V The fifth grade accumulated Sara Chanslor, Norma Dawes, Larry Stockton, and Wayne I-iuestis, and whenthe seventh grade was reached, J. Y. Turnage and James Suttles joined the group. Henceforth, there was assurance of no dull moments for either class or teachers. Our entrance into high school added Marie Petty to our frightened, confused class of "fish". We didn't remain shy and frightened long, though, for we soon caught on to the fact that upperclassmen weren't so superior or grown up as they tried to make us think. Still we were impressionable enough to be thrilled by the big new world of high school with football, algebra, pep squad, homemaking, volleyball, Hallowe'en princes and princesses, and all the rest. Our Hallowe'en prince and princess that year' were Beth Schafer and Ewing Thorpe. As sophomores, we added Jimmy Green and Bob Baker to our numberg we trust that had nothing to do with the fact that teachers told us then and tell us now that as sophomores we were demons. Besides playing that role with all our energy though, we managed to contribute a' prince and princess to the Hallowe'en Carnival in the persons of Marie Petty and James Suttles and to furnish much of the football, basketball, and cheerleader per- sonnel besides contributing the football sweetheart, Betty Lynn Oglesby. Our junior year was our most eventful and even though we still retained the reputation of being a handful for the teachers, which fact was enhanced by Darlene Sneed's talents transferredfrom Big Spring, we had an excess of energy for worthwhile projects too. ,We furnished another football sweetheart, Marie Petty, and a school favorite, Bob Baker, and amazed everyone, including ourselves, by winning the Carnival queen cdnte st, our candi- dates being Patsy McNalley and Stuart Henderson. At Christmas our mothers entertained us with a buffet dinner and in the spring our mothers again helped us when we put on our junior-senior banquet in the new gym. We were proud of that, but our greatest pride was in our junior play, Here Comes Charlie, because we all paid in time and energy for its success. The climax of the year was our first junior-senior trip--to Yellowstone suppos- edly, but in the face of a Wyoming blizzard, to Salt Lake City. - , This year our class has taken part in concession work, annual production, andthe usual extra-curricular activities, but before the year is over, we predict that we'll have our fingers in other projects. Betty Lynn Ogle sby FUTURHMIC F In D17'7G5 i By Darlene Sneed In study hall as I sat dreaming, I glanced at the seniors Whose eyes were gleaming With hopes for the future and what it holds. I closed my eyes, to the teacher's relief, And, yes, to my classmates' unbelief. I was having dreams crowd in on me. And in those dreams I found I could see . Us all doing things we'd have thought couldn't be. Now, since you're all in a state of suspense, I'll tell what I saw, and what's happened, Hence: TEN YEARS LATER ' Our Ewing Thorpe has just won the Pulitzer prize in literature for his best seller, Shakespeare, the Man. Q , ' Alma Rose Kennedy is now Mr. Goads' private secretary and bookkeeper. ' James Suttles has the illustrious title of Dr. Suttles, Foot Specialist. Bettie Calley has put her scholastic ability to use and is now a mechanic at the Ford Factory. Jimmie Shoults is owner and chief operator in "Pierre de Schoultz's Beauty Salon". Betty Lynn Oglesby has become a pilot and boasts of many exploits and world records. Our President, Bob Baker, has taken over the place in the dancing world vacated by Fred Astaire. Sara Chanslor has just won the 1961 academy award for serious and tragic dramatics. J. Y. Turnage is now a member of the Foreign Legion. Marie Petty is still Marie Petty and is matron of a girls' boarding school and teacher of Ancient Greek Mythology. ' Larry Stockton is now head waiter in a French cafe. Darlene Svneed takes inventory at the local aquarium. Patsy McNallen causes 'all the umbrellas on sunny days and the sun glasses on rainy days--she's the daily weather reporter. Wayne Huestis is now the music teacher in Odessa High School. - Norma Dawes is an outstanding television star and advertises toothpaste smiles. Jimmy Green has surpassed all his 1951 associates because his hillbillies fiddled him into the Oklahoma governor's chair.
