REAR ADMIRAL JAMES E. SERVICE COMMANDER BATTLE Ponce SIXTY Fl.EE'rlcoMMANDEn CARRIER. GROUP TWO Pear Admiral James E. Service was born in January 1931 in Grosse Point, Michigan. He began his naval career as a naval aviation cadet in November of 1950. He completed flight training and was commissioned an Ensign in April of 1952. Rear Admiral Service has served in a variety of aviation assignments including fighter, attack, reconnaissance and training squadrons. He commanded Heavy Photographic Squadron 62 and Heavy Attack Squadron 123. Additionally, we served in USS Ticonderoga QCV-405 as Catapult Officer, USS Ranger QCV-613 as Assistant Air Officer, and in USS ndependence CCV-625 as Executive Officer. Pear Admiral Service has participated in combat flights in Korea and Vietnam. His decorations include the Legion of Vlerit, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Navy Commenda- tion Medal. ln addition, he holds numerous unit and cam- oaign awards. Pear Admiral Service commanded the fast combat sup- Vi ,ia fl port ship USS Sacramento QAOE-15 and the aircraft carrier USS Independence QCV-623. He then served in Washington, D.C. as Executive Assistant and Senior Aide to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations. Following his promotion to flag rank in 1978, Pear Admiral Service served as Director, Aviation Manpower and Training COP-593. From May 1980 until June 1981, Admiral Service was Commander Carrier Group EIGHT. Pear Admiral Service attended Pennsylvania State Uni- versity, San Diego State University, the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School, Shippensburg State College, and the U.S. Army War College. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Master of Science degree in Mass Communications. Pear Admiral Service is married to the former Natalie Harpst of San Diego, California. They have three sons, Mark, Bruce, and David. .
