SIXTH Fleet's presence in the Mediterranean has been a fundamental commitment of the United States for over thirty years. In keeping with this national policy. the role of the USS FORRESTAL during this deployment has been to act as the nucleus of one of the two Battle Groups which make UP the Battle Force of the SIXTH Fleet, It is the aircraft carrier. with its embarked airwing. which is by far the most potent weapons system in the naval inventory of any nation today. During the three and a half month period I have had the privilege to be embarked. FORRESTAL has performed its mission in a variety of exercises and operations in a superb manner. All hands are to be commended for a job well done, It has been a distinct pleasure to be part ofthe FID team during this deployment
