The ship had just wound up one phase of its vital type training, an evolution which ran the gamut of a multitude of unannounced GQ's and extremely long working hours toward the goal of battle efficiency. From seaman to captain, every one longed for a change of pace - a change encountered in the form of the country's diversified culture and affable residents. If you were to ask five sailors what they enjoyed most about the tropical island you would probably received five different answers. For some, the tours of the city's several wine distilleries bore samplings of some of the world's finest wines and liquersg for others, it was the huge marketplace, where . Haitians displayed their unique woodworking talents and a silver-tongued sailor could barter for artifacts at a fraction of what they would cost back in the States. Still others opted to take part in a score of sporting contests sponsored by the city. FORRESTAL athletes encountered the strongest competition in track events. Haitian night-life was exotic offering everything from quiet neighborhood bars to night clubs featuring bands, dancing and 'voodoo' stage shows. Regardless of the way in which the F ORRESTAL'S crew spent their liberty in Port Au Prince, all will agree on one point - it was a most welcome break.
