Y v-1 L-r-' SPGRTS IN HAITI The Haitian people offered the men of FORRESTAL a complete day of sporting activities. The day began with a soccer game followed by a track meet, a volleyball contest, and ended with a basketball game. While only the basketball team was victorious in the games, the entire crew benefited from the sportsmanship and friendliness exhibited by the Haitian people. YN 1 S. Stone M FORRESTAL was welcomed to Port Au Prince by colorful Haitians in native boats. The skilled salesmen used ropes to exchange their wares for money or sailors' hats in barter. Coins tossed into the water were easily rescued by our new acquaintances. Our first appraisal of the Haitians was reinforced when we were able to more closely associate with them ashore. A warm, vibrant people, they proved to be as friendly as they were energetic.

The ship had just wound up one phase of its vital type training, an evolution which ran the gamut of a multitude of unannounced GQ's and extremely long working hours toward the goal of battle efficiency. From seaman to captain, every one longed for a change of pace - a change encountered in the form of the country's diversified culture and affable residents. If you were to ask five sailors what they enjoyed most about the tropical island you would probably received five different answers. For some, the tours of the city's several wine distilleries bore samplings of some of the world's finest wines and liquersg for others, it was the huge marketplace, where . ' f f f'f' vj'T'f Wfvimiiaefi- . .:.. Haitians displayed their unique woodworking talents and a silver-tongued sailor could barter for artifacts at a fraction of what they would cost back in the States. Still others opted to take part in a score of sporting contests sponsored by the city. FORRESTAL athletes encountered the strongest competition in track events. Haitian night-life was exotic offering everything from quiet neighborhood bars to night clubs featuring bands, dancing and 'voodoo' stage shows. Regardless of the way in which the F ORRESTAL'S crew spent their liberty in Port Au Prince, all will agree on one point - it was a most welcome break.
