I978 . . . .let aircraft roar overhead, electronics guide and inform the fleet, missiles stand ready . . . The United States Navy Mediterranean Fleet is once more asea, as it has been every year for over thirty years. Modern, utilizing the newest technology, it is a Navy in transition from the frams and cruisers of the post'WWll era, to the VSTOL carriers and Spruance class destroyers of the I980's. Suddenly the booming sound of rolling thunder is heard across the water. The U55 Forrest Sherman has fired another 5-inch guns. Long, low, and still one barrage of rounds from her of the fastest ships in the fleet, the 4000 ton Forrest Sherman is making her first Med. cruise in over two years. It has been a difficult road for her crew, but the sight and sound of her three big guns firing is proof that Navy tradition dies hard. Even at the ed f h ge o t e 80's, one of the last Great Gunships still survives.

'io .ffjgaja j 5?15y-ffrf1 ..,3: - 5.1733-1 tp :gf-lying, s 1 . It was a long hard road to February 8, I979. That was the day the Forrest 5herman's 78-79 Med cruise officially ended. What got us there was teamwork. The ability of three hundred individuals to function as one. This book is dedicated to the crew which has demonstrated teamwork in countless ways and made the Forrest Sherman one of the best ships in the Navy. This 23 year old destroyer is 4I8 feet long and displaces more than 4000 tons. She was built in Bath, Maine in I953 and christened by Mrs. Forrest P. Sherman, wife of the late Admiral. The first crew to board the Forrest Sherman in l955 must have had the same spirit of teamwork as well as every crew since then. That is why the ship has proven herself time and time again.
