During the seven months the Forrest Sherman was in the Med., she visited quite a few good ports. But, a lot of time was spent at sea. From the back breaking work of refueling to the restful hours spent lying in the sun, sea time was spent in different ways. As you can see by these pictures there were a wide variety of things to see and do at sea. Off the coast of Charleston dolphins play alongside the ship and provide a break in the hectic day's work. The sea can be as gentle as a waterbed or as rough and mighty as a storm as the picture shows. A wave or greenie as they are called breaks over the bow on our return trip to the States.

On 22 August I978 the Forrest Sherman Med-moored in Naples Harbor for a tender availability with the U55 Piedmont. Though the work schedule was quite demanding, many members of the crew had the opportunity to take advantage of the tours available and see some fascinating sights. The best enjoyed tours were those to Rome, Capri, Pompey, and Sorrento. Those who toured Rome during the first weekend in September were afforded the exciting opportunity of seeing the coronation of Pope John Paul l. Overall the restaurants were quite inexpensive and the food was very good. Naples is a large and busy city. Shopping areas are numerous and offer a wide variety of art work. leather goods, clothing, and cameos and other types of jewelry. The Navy also has a large recreation area in Naples called Carney Park. This was the site for several Ship's picnics and sporting events such as softball games. It might be interesting to note that the entire park is located inside the remains of an inactive volcano.
