cdr.herbert b. kuykendall commanding officer Commander Kuykendall assumed command of USS Forrest Sherman on I4 September l97l following tours of . duty that ranged from staff positions at the Naval War College, Commander, Mine Force, Pacific Fleet, and I Destroyer School, to sea duty aboard destroyers, amphibians and minesweepers. He believes this type of, sea duty a great opportunity in developing one's professionalism. Serving also as the ship's navigator, he finds that his capabilities as an officer have been greatly enhanced by this cruise. 5

X Qf l uss forrest sherman USS Forrest Sherman is named after the late Admiral Forrest P-. Sherman. The first ship of its class, Forrest Sherman is one of the first group of destroyers designed after World War ll. The primary mission of Forrest Sherman is anti-submarine warfare, for which she is equipped with sonar and anti-submarine torpedoes. Her three rapid firing 5 inch 54 caliber and 3 inch 50 caliber guns provide her secondary mission of anti-air warfare, surface warfare, and Naval Gunfire Support. Forrest Sherman has contributed a great deal to the role of the lJ.S. Navy, having been involvedin operations in almost every corner ofthe world.
