Y. 1-nv-gr: radm. iohn i. shanahan ir. south atlantic force, u. s. atlantic fleet Admiral Shanahan is the organizer and liaison officer for Unitas Xlll, having assumed command of South Atlantic forces in June of this year. A determined man, he sees the Unitas cruise as a key to diplomatic relations with our brothers in the Southern Hemisphere who must defend themselves against those who would threaten their freedom of the seas. The Admiral's aim is to take an obiective stance regarding maneuvers and effectively supplement the skill of the South American navies. W-:Hes-M, capt. robert l. dise destroyer squadron ten A native of Pennsylvania, Commodore Dise has served aboard various naval craft and as an instructor. ashore, most recently as Chief of Staff, Naval Support Group Activity, Saigon. As Commander, Destroyer squadron Ten, Captain Dise sees Unitas as an effective appliance which broadens our diplomatic relations with South America. His function as tactical commander for the American task force has provided a valuable exercise in command. The first ship of its class, Forrest Sherman is one of the first group of destroyers designed after World War ll. The primary mission of Forrest Sherman is anti-submarine warfare, for which she is equipped with sonar and anti-submarine torpedoes. Her three rapid firing 5 inch 54 caliber and 3 inch 50 caliber guns provide her secondary mission of anti-air warfare, surface warfare, and Naval Gunfire Support. Forrest Sherman has contributed a great deal to the role of the lJ.S. Navy, having been involvedin operations in almost every corner ofthe world.
