COMMANDER WILLIAM D. CHATTLETON COMMANDING OFFICER Commander William D. Chattleton was born in Melbourne, Australia, on 12 April 1925, and entered the Naval Service in January 1943. After serving on the battleship, USS NEW YORK, he entered the NROTC program and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1946, after attending Yale and Brown Universities. After serving one year on the USS MEN DER KARSD-2l and participating in the Operation Crossroads Atomic Bomb tests at Bikini, he was released to inactive duty in June 1947, to continue studies at Brown University. He was recalled to active duty in September 1950, during the Korean War.During a 30 month tour on USS RICHARD B.ANDERSON KDD-786i which included assignment as Gunnery Officer, he earned four battle stars for participating in shore bombardments and gun strikes at Hungnam, Hamhung, Chongjin, Wonsan, Songjin and the bomb line. While operating with TE 77, he maneuvered the ship at night as OOD, on two occasions to locate and pick up crashed pilots and their crews when the USS ANDERSON was assigned as rescue de- stroyer. Commander Chattleton was Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Training Center, Fort Niagara, Youngs- town, N.Y. and subsequently was ordered to USS NORTHAMPTON CLC-1 as Assistant Gunnery and Air Defense Officer from 1955 - 1957. Prior to his assignment to the Destroyer USS GOODRICH KDDR-831i as Executive Officer, he spent three years in Logistics Planning on the CINCLANTICINCLANTFLT Staff. After recently completing a tour in OPNAV as Head of the Ordnance Material Section, Commander Chattleton was ordered to command of USS FORREST ROYAL CDD-8721, in July 1965. Commander Chattleton is married to the former Margaret Oakley and has four children, Eileen, age 15, Laurie Anne, age 11, Heather, age 6, and William Jr., age 41!2. Commander Chattleton and family reside at U.S. Naval Station, Mayport, Florida.
