The winter sun provided little warmth to those of us manning the rail to enter port, 'twith pea coats buttoned, collars down. Marseilles is France's largest seaport and has a long history. To the Romans, it was the seaport of Massillia, but extensive destruction during World War II has left little of ancient value, and conversely rebuilding has made the city clean and and prosperous.
