The FORREST ROYAL CDD872i was named for the late Rear Admiral Forrest B. Royal, USN. Admiral Royal served as Commander of the cruiser MILWAUKEE, and as a group commander ofthe amphibous assault of the Phillippines and Dutch Indies. For this exceptionally meritorious services, Admiral Royal was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a second Distinguished Service Medal. ln addition to the Distinguished Service Medal, Admiral Royal was awarded the following: The victory medal with Atlantic Fleet Clasp for World War l, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal and a Brazilian Medal Decoration. Admiral Royal died in the Asiatic Area of coronary thrombosis on June l8,l945, to him this book is dedicated. The U.S.S. Forrest B. Royal iDD872J was built by Bethlehem Steel, Shipbuilding Division, Staten lsland, New York. The keel for this new 2250 ton class destroyer was laid on 8 June i945 and the ship was launched on 28 June l946. During most of her career, the Royal has served as a member of the Destroyer Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. For a period of eight months in 1950-i95l the ship served a tour of duty in the Far East, playing a role in the then active Koreqngconflict. Once again the Royal retuigto Far Eastern waters as a member of the last division of Atlantic Fleet Destrovers T0 be SO rotated. The pages that follow tell the story of that cruise.

Doyle, USN, from Boston, Massachusetts who is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy class of I942. He is married and has 2 sons and 2 dauahters residina in Boston. Captain Doyle served on the Destroyers USS MEREDITH lDD434l and USS DALY lDD5l9l and also com- manded the destroyer escorts USS EBERT CDD768l and USS CATES CDD763l. He has had staff duty with Commander Cruiser Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and the office ofthe Chief of Naval Operations. He is also a graduate of the post graduate school in An- napolis, , Md. and the Naval War College, Newport, R.l. ' CDR Doyle was awarded the Purple Heart in the sinking of the USS MEREDITH, the Silver Star for gallantry in the Battle of Suriago Straits in l944, and the Bronze Star with the combat distinguishing device at Okinawa in l945.
