We de- parted Newport a group of individuals with intermingled feeling and emotions. Some of us were sad to leave our families and friends while for others itrepresented a fulfillment of desire to see new and exotic places. For all there was a deep feeling of pride and honor to be able to serve our country and fellow men. As we return to Newport having completed a tour around the world, the crew of the ROYAL has emerged as a cohesive group. Men and ship have served together in an ex- perience which has benefited all. All of us, as we leave ROYAL, some as civilians and others to continue our Naval careers on other ships, will always remember the World Cruise of the ROYAL. R. Although not personally responsible for the scandalous behavior of the officers, "'ESTHER", in the form of an 8" x l0" portrait photo was originally brought aboard the Australian Destroyer NEPAL, in April l942. Her mission was to improve the morale of the ship, after it left its homeland to do battle with the enemy in the early days of World War ll. More recently this trophy has been the cause of much good natured fun among Naval Officers of many ships and several Nations. Fortunately the rules of this contest bar the use of lethal weapons. I During their tour of For East duty in l95l, the men of the ROYAL wardroom were honored with a brief visit from Lady Esther. Not to be outdone by their predecessors, our crafty Executive Officer had little trouble in stealing the princess of the sea away from the officers of the ROAN, into whose hands the lovely damsel had fallen. Of those 224 days 2 765 hours and 56 minutes or 51.376 of the total length of the cruise were spent at sea. That gave us an average overall speed of 14.3 knots. The Special Sea Detail was set 74 times while liberty parties were sent ashore in 18 different ports including 14 different countries. During our cruise, 188,162 individual meals were served, for which 13,440 loaves of bread were baked. Coffee? No less than 4,980 pounds - over two tons - of coffee were used making a total of 119,522 cups, or 467 cups per man. The ship's store sold 67,313 packages of cigarettes or about 300 packages per day, while over 5204, 000 was paid out on 15 paydays. Of necessity, this is only a partial list of the statistics available concerning our cruise. No doubt each member of the Forrest Royal's crew could add a few statistics of his own, official and otherwise. Confronted with the above, a casual observer might query, "Was this trip really worth it? Comment of the former is quoted in part: "Reference Kai is an outstanding example of thorough and accurate electronic failure reporting. The Bureau of Ships needs, but seldom gets, such thoughful analysis of electronic failures by elec- tronics technicians. It is hoped that in the future more reports of this high calibre will be submitted promptly and continuously as failures occur". ln addition, as leading Sonarman since June of l954 and a member of the Master-At-Arms Force since 'November 'l953, he has consistently carried out his duties in an efficient and exemplary manner.
