Captain Oshinsky utilized consistent strokes to eliminate his oppo- nents in the first singles spot, while Viccaro Cplaying first doubles with Bronstonl, made use of a powerful forehand, Satenspiel as third singles man combining lightning ground- strokes and excellent net play to overcome his adversaries. Fine tennis on iunior Ken Bronston's part in the second singles position proved to be a tremendous help to the team, as were the victories racked up by Heilbut and Schwerner in the second singles. .Q T A ,H ,- I f r Q .lu K K: I f ' . it SOCCER Off to a fast start, F.H. booters vanquished Bayside four- nothing, Dan Dabby outmaneuvering, outkicking, but mainly out- scoring anyone on both teams with an impressive three goals to his credit. Dabby seems to have been the mainstay of the team this year, for out of the next sixteen Tri-Color field goals, twelve were accredited to him. iFifteen out of a total of twenty goals scored: not badll It is evident, however, that this fine playing could have been accomplished only with a fine team and a fine coach, we had both. A potent defense coupled with a strong offense resulted in a 3-5-I record. Don't let the figures mislead you, for every game with but one exception was hard fought to the finish. Norberto Massera, M.ke Taussig, and Bob Becket were excellent on defense. Also turning in fine performances were goalies Mike Horowitz and David Balboul. Veteran Ronnie Koenig and co-captain Steve Silone exhibited flashy play, joined by newcomers Amnon Kent, Yehuda Gelb, Steve Fried, Dan Epstein, Charlie Ohana, and Neil Yuron, and Joseph Meshi. Our second victory came against Von Buren whom we toppled five to nothing. Yehuda Gelb will remember this game, he booted in his first goal. Our three-three tie with East N.Y. saw Massera and Ohana record tallies also. A catastrophic loss for F.H. was to Cleveland: IO-O. However if one might allude to Friday the Thir- teenth, the day on which the game occurred .... Our third win was over Richmond Hill: 3-0. Injuries to Dabby and goalie Horowitz certainly hampered team PIUYI Yet in retrospect, 'the season was a fine one4in ,the eyes of Coflfh D0Yle Iheld in high esteem by alll, manager Richard Titus, members Of the TSCIH1, but especially the Hillite student body, who held and will hold a proud opinion of the '60-'61 Soccer Vmshyn TENNIS TEAM Standing, l. to r.: Bruce Satenspiel, Frank Viccarro Henry Sghwemer Dave Orlinsky Mr. Paul Haber Coach Kneel' ' ' ' : K Richard Bronstein. mg enneth Brannon' . -1..L V F-I'l-l'l.5- 72 Newtown 51 . Bryant BASKETBALL The Rangers had everything this season. They had an over-all record of 17-3, they set a team scoring record, an individual scoring record was made, they had a tele- vised game, they played at the Garden, and they had iniuries ,,.. A powerful team was the order of the season, as the hoopsters with their strong rebounding and precision shoot- ing wenf on to crush Jamaica, thus earning them a berth in the P,S.A.L. play-offs at the Madison Square Garden. They wouldn't have stopped at the Garden either if Irwin Isser had not torn the ligaments in his leg, if Andy Cannel hadn't iniured his wrist, if Howie Drucker hadn't sprained his hand, if Junior Garnes hadn't pulled a leg muscle. The minute difference of score in that last game against Bryant is only proof of the terrific battle put on by the Tri-Color. All will remember the clinching game against Jamaica, where two F.H. scoring records were broken. Entered into the book was a mark of 100 tallies, beating the standing Ranger mark of 99 recorded in '57. Steve Chubin, who had done iust about everything during his three years on the Varsity, hit for 41 notches erasing Stan Needleman's mark of 35 set a few years back. F.H. pride swelled as the hoopsters romped Van Buren 84-73 before the television cameras and an audience of two million. Joy Warhaftig, a sophomore who showed ex- ceptional all-around performance, scored 32 points in this contest. The roster was comprised of the following: Steve Chubin, high scorer for the team with an unstoppable lay- up and tremendous rebounding power, Irwin Isser, possessor of a fine outside shot, Larry Leiberman, the "Bob Cousy" playmaker of the Tri-Color, Andy Canell, a fine iump- shooter, Howie Drucker, a versatile, aggressive ballplayer, and Jay Warhaftig, a sophomore who bears watching. Others who saw action were: Don Coscia and Junior Garnes lboth fine reboundersl, Jay Zises, Barry Silver, Larry Rivkin, Vern Haley, and Mike Dunn. Tommy Freund and Jimmy Goldschmidt comprised our 50 yard freestyle bid, Goldschmidt winning all of his nine meets. Expert diving on the part of Brad Clinis helped the tanksters, with other participation from Les Haber. Rounding it out were Bruce Bayer and Harry Lutz. James Goldschmidt won fifth place in the 50 yard freestyle in the City Champs. 11 .limi F.H.H.S. 3 F.H.H.S. 0 F.H.H.S. BOWLING Wavering between the win-lose column, F.H. Keglers placed second in their Queens division, with a final record of six and four. Things looked promising as the Tri-Color crushed Flushing in the opener, captain Steve Greiner roll- ing a 252 and Bob Karp's 211. However, three defeats fol- lowed at the hands of Jackson, Jamaica, and Bayside, thus ruling out any chance for the City-Champs spot. The team is to be commended for the fine spirit and effort shown which resulted in a record of 4-l out of the last tive P.S.A.L. meets. Mainstays on the varsity were Dave Siegle, Spin Cogan, Donald Berns, Dennis Lewin, Stephen Greiner lteam captainl, Bob Karp, and Darryl Reade. Reade, a junior, will be expected to come through with some fine bowling next year. Others who saw action were Larry Leibowitz, and Mark Lichtenberg. FENCING A team comprised mostly of rookies made up the F.H. Fencing Varsity of the '60-'61 season. Led by iunior Bill Birnes iwho tills the number one spotl the foilsmen achieved a record of victories and few defeats and man- aged to place tirst in the Queens Division. At the first meet of the season, the High School Fenc- ing Championships, Birnes placed fourth, but was victorious over Dave Kaplan fthe final over-all winner from Clintonl in the final round. Others representing the Tri-Color at the meet were Steve Wolosker, Phil Zaretsky, Roger Cohen, and Marshall Lycsterol. Marc Brawer managed the team at these championship meets. The latter matches of the season were with Brooklyn Auto, Snyder, Taft, and top-rated Jamaica. Birnes did well in his contests, as well as Marc Brawer and Steve Weinstein, the number two and three men respectively. ln following contests, Bob Solaske, Neil Berelson, and Gary Jonas also participated. Coach Victor Ritchie is looked upon as one of the finest fencing coaches in the nation, and although this year's team is a very far cry from the days of Gene Glaser and Marv ,L X of -.2 Grafton, it is very likely that he will develop the potentials of the past season's toilers to much greater extent next year. Cindermen capped the fifth spot in a field of forty at the Fordham Prep meet, and placed seventh fone of the better showings seen in the last few yearsl in the Queens Champs. Strong show- ings in the Bishop Loughlin and Cardinal Hayes meets, coupled with some fast relaying in the Metropolitan Junior, were evidence of the fine team Coach Sirota put together this past season. Louis Long seems to have been a highlighter on the team, winning two medals and exhibiting flashy showings with his speedy running. Joe McAuley, a half-miler, put in a fine showing against Great Neck South. The Mile Relay was composed of Phil Daughtry Calso the hop, step, and iump manl, Paul Weisberg, Louis Long, and Howie Brous. ln the half-mile relay, Mark Levitt lwho also ran the 60 and 'lO0 yard dashl, Howie Brous lpossessor of a fast 220 markl, Murray Vale, and Gary Luckman participated with speedy performances. Flushing " Postponed, rain BASEBALL F.H. batsmen, hampered by rain, made a fine showing t in their beginning appearances of the '61 season. Led by Coach Chet Gusick, the erstwhile Queens Division lll Champs seemed destined to repeat a performance like that of last season. Rugged ball handling, smooth base running, and good hitting were the order of the day. The Tri-Color roster was made up of many veterans, as well as many promising newcomers. Among the veterans were: Mike Werner, a southpaw with a iumping fastball, Gerry Chasin, a fine third baseman with a dangerous bat, John Bly, a top-notch all around catcher, Co-Captain Ramsey Dabby, a flawless infielder, John Kolatch, a good defensive catcher, Co-Captain Howard Drucker, a familiar man in the first base spot, shortstop Steve Chubin, already in the record books in PSAL basketball, and two very versatile outfielders, Tommy Tanner and Roy Ageloff. A fine pitching stali, molded by Coach Gusick, turned in some fine performances. Hurlers Jeff Small, Harvey Trachtenberg, and Mike Werner headed the staff. Aiding them were rookies Paul Grebinar, Steve Schwartz, and Larry Rivkin, all of whom showed tremendous promise. Other moundsmen were Dave Gordon and Ira Klein, both sophomores. Adaptobility was another great asset. Basemen such as Ronnie Rosen and Jordan Cayne proved themselves as catchers as well as at other berths on the diamond. Richie Drucker proved to be a valuable intielder. Com- iii ...A mendable showings were also rendered by outtielders Ethan Fishman, Darryl Reade, and Mike Frank. Mention should be made to those who aided the l Varsity off the field.
