' 4 SOCCER The Forest Hills soccer team, under Coach Ray Doyle, recorded a 3-4-2 mark by finishing sixth in the new ten- team Queens league. A lock of scoring punch proved costly to the Rangers as they were blanked three times in league play and twice in practice matches. In spite of their mediocre record, the team, led by co-captains Donny Fox and Bob Helenius, played well defen- sively. Junior goalie Mike Horowitz proved to be a welcome surprise allow- ing only one goal in three games, losing to Bayside l-0, before shutting out Van Buren and Jamaica in the final two con- tests. Horowitz shared the goaltender's position with senior Brian Wechsler. The team record: Forest Hills Opponents Forest Hills Brooklyn Tech' Forest Hills Bryant' Forest Hills L.l.C. Forest Hills Newton Forest Hills Richmond Hill Forest Hills Aviation Forest Hills Bayside Forest Hills Bryant Forest Hills Cleveland Forest Hills Van Buren Forest Hills Jamaica ' Non-league Competition TRACK AND CROSS- COUNTRY The Forest Hills High School track- men have posted some highly favorable statistics in the Cross-Country and ln- door meets. Double medal winner in Cross-Country, Ike Balbus, made a fine showing with a 4:57 mile in the N.Y.U. meet. ln the seeded open of the Cardi- nal Hayes meet, captain Mike Gold- berger placed fourteenth out of approx- imately one hundred and fifty in the half mile. In the Mayor's Games, Gold- berger missed tying the school record in the i000 yard run, in which he placed seventh in the city, however, he went onto take a third place medal in the N.Y.U. meet where he ran the T000 in 2:25. Also in the Cardinal Hayes Games, Mike Schoenwald scored for Forest Hills High School by winning the silver medal in the high iump. His second place eltort of 5'8" is only one inch under the school record: later in January, Mike tied the six year old record and is determined to set a new one. SWIMMING The Forest Hills Swimming Team, Queens Champs of 1958, returned for the 1959 campaign hopeful, but failed to recapture the title. The first two meets proved easy vic- tories for the Forest Hills natators as they swept past Franklin K. Lane and Richmond Hill. However, the graduation of more than two-thirds of last year's team was felt as the Rangers were downed by strong competition from Jamaica, Jackson, Bayside, Far Rock- away and Adams. Impressive efforts were displayed by many team mem- bers Martin Randall high scorer this year and Ricky Pelton were consistent ly good in the breaststroke event. Cap- tain Ed Wichta, Larry Shapiro, Mike Steinbaum and Stu Rabinowitz also added to Forest Hills' strength in the 100 yd. freestyle, 50 yd. freestyle, 100 yd. backstroke and fancy dive, respec- tively. In the last few meets, Coach Vic Mare regrouped his strength to break the five meet losing streak by edging past Flushing, 36-34, and sweeping by Cleveland, 41-29, in the last contest of the '59 season. Many juniors were on the team this year. With a little im- provement from all of them, Coach Mare can expect a fairly strong team next year. Record: Forest Hills 39 Lane Forest Hills 31 Jamaica Forest Hills 14 Jackson Bob Kret Forest Hills 45 Richmond Hill BASKETBALL After a successful exhibition season and an opening victory in league play, the Forest Hills High School basketball team seemed to skid and finished in the fourth place of Queens Division Ill with a 4-6 record. This was a team that with a little more height and a bit more luck could have finished first or second instead of fourth. Every loss, with the exception of their 64-51 defeat suffered at the hands of Jamaica, was a close one that could have gone either way until the final few seconds. Led by their All-Queens forward, Steve Chubin, with a fine sup- porting cast of honorable mention All- Queens players Danny Moscot, Marty Schwartz and Steve Pomerantz, the Rangers lost two thrilling games to Van Buren la team destined to reach the semi-finals of the City Championships? in the last few minutes because of their lack of overall height. ln the late part of the season when things were going bad for the Rangers the one bright spot was the play of Roger Shelley. George Cole also proved that he could shoot as well as be the best rebounder on the team. This team did not have as much all around ability as some of the other Forest Hills teams of the past, but it had a great amount of spirit and although the record doesn't indicate it, one could say that the Rangers enioyed a fine season. Under new coach Milton Sirota, the keglers finished two games behind the eventual City Champs, Jamaica. Co- captains Mike Marchese and Frank Richard bowled consistently well throughout the season. The highlight of the season came in our second match against Bayside. ln this 2-1 victory the Tri-color keglers scored the highest series of any match in Queens Division Ill competition. Frank Richard tallied 254 in the first game to lead the Rangers in their 2163 series. Bob Lazarro and Mike Marchese were two of the five bowlers on both teams to break the 200 mark in the second game of the match. It was the lack of returning lettermen that made it almost impossible for the bowlers to repeat as City Champs. However, nine varsity members will re- turn next season to provide the experi- ence necessary for a championship team. Co-captains Marchese and Richard, Steve Greiner and Bob Lazarro com- pleted the tirst team. Other lettermen were Bob Klein, Jeff Kaplan, Mark Schechner, Jeff Small, Jeff Pearl, Vic Arny and Louis Greenfield. DIVISION CHAMPS! BASEBALL Ranger hopes for a league title in baseball materialized as the mounds- men, under the tutelage of Coach Chet Gusick, swept past Jamaica, Van Buren and Bayside after an opening defeat to Jackson. These were impressive early league victories since Jamaica had been favored to repeat as Queens champs and Van Buren, City-champs of l958, were in first place in Queens Division Ill when the Forest Hills nine dethroned them by the decisive margin of 8-4. Pitcher Richie Reynolds demonstrated that he could swing o bat as well as throw his famed knuckle-ball as he started the season batting .750 in four league games. Close behind were other Ranger stalwarts: Joel Willen, the nine's curve ball artist, second baseman Jackie Katz, shortstop Steve Pomerantz, catcher Sandy Solon: first baseman Ed Oblow, third baseman Mike Finkelstein and outtielders Ron Merenstein and Les Lothstein. These first string players led Queens in team hitting for the first four games ata .392 clip. QUEENS CHAMPS! TENNIS The 1960 Forest Hills High School tennis season was one of the brightest ever seen. Under the expert tutelage of coach Paul Haber, the veteran team won match after match and lost but few games. The captains of the team were Richy Berman and Tom Vicarro. These two and Alan Reid occupied the top singles posi- tion. According to o new PSAL rule, each team has two doubles teams. This was no hindrance to the Rangers' winning combina- tions of Jerry Oster-Dave Oshinsky and Larry Propper-Roger Shelley. A few new players were added to the squad in hopes of maintaining the fine tennis record of Forest Hills High School, which has been upheld for nearly two decades. The newcomers were Bruce Satenspiel, Frank Vicarro and Neil Yuran. They were selected as a result of their fine play in the annual Max Jacobs Memorial Tournament. The finalists were Richy Berman and Tom Vicarro. Many of the netmen will be playing college tennis in the Fall. No doubt their fine playing will label them Forest Hills' prodigies. : .,..
