the power to malce such a peace. Xve must he sure that the youth ol no nation inherit a hlanlc or barren soil. Only a land secure in itself can he secure from those external forces which would have it crumhle and fall. VVe can help them to gain the homes and farms and lactories to malce them economically stahle- the schools and hospitals to make them socially secure. Vve can give them the fruits ol our democracy - esthetic as well as material. We can give them life. And what is more. we can give them that which malces lille worth while- freedom. Freedom to thinlc. to act, to worlc. to play. Freedom to live. And in return, we shall have peace. This world may he a clream. hut l am not ashamed ol it, lor it was the dream ol a great president and 300.000 American boys. whose dreams lie buried with them lrom Bataan to Berlin. and I am not ashamed ol the ideals lor which they died. Let us make our battleground a laboratory, a classroom, and a hospital - places where we can world together- where we can win together. This is the world l want, lor it is the world in which l can helieye. It is hard to helieye that you shall exist Xvhen l am gone. You are so much a part ol me That l can not visualize Another hand on your hannister Another loot on your stair. Your lights were lit lor me, Your lcnowledge spolcen lor my ears. Your hooks. ranged side hy side. were wailing for my touch. Your song was mine to sing. It is your voice which has echoed mine Down the empty corridors And in the quiet' rooms. No. l cannot helieve that you shall exist NVhen l am gone. l shall talce too much of you with me ln my heart.

Ula Warren an Say, where do l lit into the picture? l didnit win the Vvestinghouse Science Talent Search: tdiclnlt even get an honorable mentionl. l wasn't the leading light ol Play Production, or ot the much advertised musical Hit the Deck. l haven't had anything published in Forest Leavesn and l haven't been a Beacon editor. l neither led the tennis team to one ot its many city championships, nor made the starting live ot the basketball team. and as the coup cle grassen tpardon my already llorgotten French, l am not a member ol Arista. ll isn't that l didnit aim high enough, but how serious can you get? Besides, l had to lceep my average high enough to be able to lace my parents. Perhaps it isn't high enough lor Harvard, but alter all. Harvard isn't the whole show. One term l got 95 in French, and l thought l was hot stutl, till l managed that all time low ol 30 in lxlath the following term. On the whole though, mine has been sort ot an average average, it you want to loolc, you can see my picture in another part ot this boolc. Some' body in my section wrote a caption under it. Youll thinlc a fellow would get to lcnow you better alter being in the same section lor tour years. But l guess it's hard to sum up a personality in one sentence. Another thing, l guess. in my own peculiar way, l've contributed a little some- thing to the general welfare ol FHHS. You've probably seen me in the stage crew ol Play Pro. or on the basketball squad where l'm mostly a bench warmer, or maybe in the school orchestra where l played second fiddle. But they say that Play Pro. couldnt get along without a stage crew. or an orchestra without second tiddles. The things l do just don't malce the headlines. tntteaconu or otherwise., Don't thinlc l'm beeling. I lcnow what t haven't done and what l have done. But school has meant a lot ol things: more than a lot ol hardworking teachers trying to put some lite into dull subjects. lt's been what some people might call the little things-lcidding around with friends toll both sexest --swiping rides on lxflilcevs elevator- getting to lcnow a teacher well enough to realize he's human. All these things are worth more to me than lcnowing ilu- lwlonroe Doctrine, or the tour con- jugations ol Latin verbs. And now what next lor this non-Arista member. with no world-shalcing ambi- tion? l'll probably go on to college, without a scholarship or blare ol trumpets. Even though it means tour more years ol teachers and classrooms. l guess that these days you need a good education-more than you get out ol high school alone. All l want out ol lite is a job, a family, and a chance lor my lcids to grow up without lcnowing the sound ol air-raid sirens. And this is something I'll worlc lor. l'll worlc lor it because it means more to me than a O5 in French or even a 30 in lxflath. And though perhaps l dicln't matte the most out ol' all my opportunities, l'll tight to give my lcids the same opportunities I had. Thatis the way l feel. And l thinlc that's the way we all feel.
