The Forester
Forest Hills High School
Forest Hills, New York
To the Graduating Class ol June HMO:
ln recent visits to schools and colleges l have lound that the young people ol'
America are very conscious ahout the United Nations. There have heen discussions
and meetings centered around the United Nations. There is no question that the
youth of America comprise our most concerned supporters.
Youth has a great importance in inlluencing puhlic opinion. By discussing at
home with your parents what you have learned in school, you can prepare and
clirect puhlic opinion. You can give the adults the history, lnacts and haclcground
of events that happened len, lilteen and twenty years ago, which they may have
forgotten. You can give them an appreciation of what is he-hind the headlines:
headlines olten being their only contact with the news.
ln the years to follow, as in the past three years. you may read and hear much
of the political disagreements in the U.N. But remember that it is perfectly natural
lor people to pay more attention to a discussion or a quarrel than to a good steady
ioh ol worlc.
To those people who tallc ol delaying the next war, l say that it is senseless to
spealc of such a delay, because if there is anything certain about another war, it is
that the passage of time will not make it any less deadly. Another war would he a
catastrophe, tomorrow, five years from now, or in the year 20003 it is foolish to try
to pretend otherwise.
To you young people -fl would like to repeat what 1 said at the Herald Trihune
Forum last year:
XVe can build the world we want only if the nations as a whole live together
peacefully and work together loyalty to realize the principles ol the San Francisco
Charter.
There is no other way. . .
