DEAR FRIENDS:
Your "Forester" staff has indicated to me that this issue will relate to the role of
youth in huiiding for worid peace. Flay I congratulate your editorial staff upon its
presentation of the subject to your thoughtful consideration.
in your classrooms and discussion forums you have given serious study to the
structure and operations of the United Nations as the hope of all mankind in
striving towards this goal. We still have faith that through the united action of all
nations for peace our aspirations may he achieved. And yet, We know the disillu-
sionment that so many of our observers in Europe report at the present time. it is
their common opinion that, despite our Marshall Plan efforts, Europe suffers from
a two-fold sickness -- economic dislocation and the threat of Russian communism.
With the economic vitais torn out of Germany and tariff walls restricting the free
How of goods from one place to another, Western Europe finds the task of recon-
struction almost insurmountable. The threat of Russian aggression and the use of
Hilifth coiumnn activities to paraiyze recovery efforts have reduced the morale of
Western Europe to a low state. Our State Department has supported and effected
the signing of the North Atlantic Pact to help cure Western Europe of its iiiness.
You are the youth of a great nation committed to the preservation of democracy
in government- government founded upon the doctrine of human freedom and
rights. As a preparation for your study of worid peace, may you steep yourselves in
the poiiticai philosophy of our founding fathers.
For, if ever we are to reaiize peace in our time, it must he a peace based upon
those spiritual values that are the roots of our Western civilization.

We today go forth to build a new tomorrow. We go
lorth in the hope ol creating a lasting peace in this era ol
confusion and bitterness: with faith and enthusiasm we
direct our ideas toward a uniliied plan in the knowledge
that we can rebuild a world. The four freedoms, the ap-
preciation ol lair play, and the recognition ol the destruc-
tiveness oi war: these become our implements lor forging
the peace. We disavow the loose word, the unwarranted
aggression of peoples and of nations, the prejudiced act,
and the easy recourse to force. By joining our young neigh-
bors we can meet these obstacles and conquer them with
understanding and tolerance. The future tranquillity of
nations depends on a united youth: it is to this loelief that
our yearlnoolc is dedicated.
