We, the Class of l952, dedicate this issue of The Forest Leaves to Grace
Holtzmuller who through the years has been an outstanding teacher and a
sincere friend. Your untiring efforts as class sponsor in the promotion of the
many activities of the junior class is deeply appreciated. Your interest and
counsel will ever be cherished in the memory of our high school days. Our
wish is that many more classes may have the opportunity of your guidance
and kindliness.
From a material viewpoint you have,- no doubt, garnered but little,
yet in the lives of those who have sat at your feet, you have given to humanity
high aims of unselfishness and service. This is your compensation.
May the years be kind and full of happiness for you. To you, our
sincere thanks and may God bless you.

C lass Prophecy
The audience is seated now and the curtain is about to be drawn to portray the Senior
Class of i952 twenty-five years from the time of their graduation.
The magnificent curtain parts and on the stage of life stands my class as Father Time shows
them to me in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and seventy seven.
First to appear on the stage of life is Mervyn Curran, a very popular ,minister in Holly-
wood. Mervyn has appeared in several movies with his forever impressive marriage ceremony.
Also with Mervyn in Hollywood is Janice Musgrave. Oh! But she is not there for the reason you
think. Janice is vice-president of an organized club for tall girls. She is vice-president because
she is next to the tallest girl in the club. The club is called "Six Feet or Over". Janice owes it
all. to vitamins.
Ruth Lines, it seems, is governor of Texas. She can rope a steer and ride a pony with a
great deal of skill and is liked by all the Texans. Pat Kauble is in Texas, too. She has opened
a ranch of five thousand acres "Deep in the Heart of Texas". Although Pat has engaged
twenty cowboys, she intends to oversee the work herself. Wise girl!
Next we see Leon Thacker. My, how he has changed! He is storming the country with
"Give me women or give me a rope and the nearest tree." Don't be too hard on yourself,
Leon! His old friend, John Harford, is a financier of the Cantrun Auto Manufacturers. He
drives one of these machines himself and claims it will go around anything on the road that isn't
going over thirty miles per hour.
Seeing Florence Gorman as the warden in the county jail isn't surprising. Florence has
much power in that right arm and the bad men and women are kept very orderly.
On the stage is o university, it is Hootin Holler University. Norman Hayes is coach there.
He owes it all to the fact that his picture was flashed across the nation in leading newspapers
as the largest boy in the Northwest Conference League.
Patterson is in the spotlight now. lt seems that the prominent -society leader, Loretta
Tracy, will be at her home to receive guests for a few weeks before leaving soon on a tour of
the South to renew her search for a handsome husband. Also from Patterson comes the news
that John Waller is the head of the U. S. Rum Running Crew on the Blanchard River. He pa-
trols the river day and night, stopping every person or cow to come along. Good luck, John!
There is a huge crowd now. -Apparently Erna Simpson, the popular mezzo-bass singer of
The Metropolitan Opera Company has returned home. During her concert, she will sing, "Gur-
gle, Gurgle" from Listerine by Halitosis.
Kay Albert, now a dairy farmer of high degree, owns many cows and what he doesn't
know about them is absolutely not known. Kay owes much of his knowledge to Mr. Becker.
Then Lois Spoon comes on the stage of life. She is a noted chemistry professor, who is just
back from an extensive tour to see if she can find a metal that will make Fords run all the time,
regardless of condition.
There is the smell of food. lt is a restaurant run by lda Packer and her husband is chief
cook--handsome enough that any person would be proud to own him. Oh no! lt can't be, but
it is. They have hired Donald Conley and he is peeling potatoes. lt's hard to believe, but then
seeing is believing.
The character of Sherlock Holmes has appeared in Beth Alguire. Her brilliant work on
the age old mystery of "Button, Button, who has the button," has won the admiration of every-
one. She is now working on the case, "Who put the turn in turnips?"
Raymond Weber is seen driving a milk wagon for Kay Albert. Raymond gets up before
seven and has the milk delivered by 4:00 p.m. Such speed! What a change!
Airplanes enter the picture now. Edith Cramer is just arriving after having been to Wash-
ington. She was commended for her heroic services in the W.A.F. Edith had a long visit with
John Hooker, who has a line of motels all over the world. He has come up with a new idea-
floating gas stations. Airplanes are the mode of transportation and they can't come down to
earth long enough to fuel up. John is like the proverbial sailor "A girl in every portl"
Barbara Parsell was also at the airport. She was just getting ready to leave for Holly-
wood, where her job was waiting for her. Barbara is the second Hedda Hopper and is contem-
plating going on television. Barbara and Don Wilkins were visiting. Don has returned from a
long vocation in Europe. He is the chief and favorite announcer at W.F.H.S., he is noted for
his clear and well modulated voice that can be heard at great distances. Forest is proud of all
these travelers.
Back at Forest we find Margaret Bash as a very popular Home Economics teacher. Her
accordian lessons are very popular with the students. Giles Essinger is also in Forest, as section
manager of the Mee and U Railroad. Giles could be president of the road but he prefers the
wide open places.
Carolyn Baum is head nurse of the circuit of hospitals in Hardin County. Carolyn has a
class of ZOO girls with which she gives performances for her patients.
Everett Woolley is a grave digger in "The Pleasant Cemetery." He can throw a shovel in a
way that makes other grave diggers envious.
And I, Carolyn Kauble am in Hawaii teaching the natives how to hula. Soon I will be going
to New York with my troupe to perform in the Lexington Room.
What about Mr. Pine? Well, he's still thinking up money mad schemes for the Senior
Classes. I hear that he is getting stingier every day. Mr. Pine, that job is going to make you
a real miser yet.

Senior Class Play
May 8-9, l952, saw the final curtain open for the dramatic talent of the
Senior class. The play-TURN BACK THE CLOCK-by Marrijane and
Joseph Hayes was built around the universal truth that, after all, all genera-
tions are alike.
We hope fervently that we have succeeded in bringing back the- magic
of the year l928 with the inevitable Charleston, yellow slicker, the racoon
overcoat, ukuleles, jazz, and painted jalopies. We hope our audience were

During the school year of l95l -l952, our days were filled with many interesting acti-
vities. As our class advisor, we had Mrs, Holtzmuller, who, all the classes will tell you, is
very understanding and fun to work with.
Among our projects for our Junior year were two successful scrap drives for which we
wish to thank all the people who helped us.
Our class play-TATTLETALE-was next. We will never forget the fun we had in produc-
ing this play. As many graduates who have put on plays know, there is nothing like prac-
ticing at night and all the little romances and mischievousness that took placel We were
quite fortunate in being able to'practice during the Halloween season, too. A note to our
victims: We really pity you next year when those, if you'll pardon the expression, Sopho-
more wildcats are on the loose!
Next on our list were some one-act plays put on in chapel and at a P.T.A. meeting.
These were comical and fun to work on with Mrs, Holtzmuller as our director again.
Our last and most anticipated project was our Junior-Senior Prom. We sincerely hope
that all who attended found it very pleasant and enjoyable.
With final exams completing our Junior year, we are now ready to enter our Senior
year at Forest High School. As we look back, we find that time has passed very rapidly.
Our only hope is that this coming year will prove as interesting and happy as the last
eleven have.

Class Officers: Robert Johnson, Vice President, Carole Lehman, Secretary, Mona
Fortney, Treasurer, Paul Staley, President.
Yes, there are now only two years of school for the Class of '54 and, though often
times it's rather tough, most of us don't envy the departing Seniors one "smidgum."
Our Sophomore year has been filled with bake sales, scrap drives, and counting sales
tax stamps. Of course, we can't neglect to mention also that we sold a few of our wonder-
ful "FHS" socks, They're getting cheaper every year, starting at 50 cents a pair, then 25
cents, and our latest cut has left them at two pairs for 25 centsl lYou can buy them from
anyone in our classl
As for the scrap drive, we wish to state that it would not have been very wise to men-
tion the word "paper" to any Sophomore during the certain week of the school term when
we had to box all of it. lt was really a job! There were also other-times when the word
"paper" disturbed us. These times were the weeks when we were writing newspapers in our
English class. Another jobl But now that they are over, both are fun to remember. These
are the things that we must strive to keep in mind in order to really enjoy the rest of our
school career. After the difficult things are done, we can look back at them with pride and
pleasure.
We of the Class of '54 hope sincerely that the graduating class has mony of these
pleasant memories and that each one will find success in his life ahead.

"Freshmen? Hal Why they're green peas." Everyone
makes fun ot the Freshmen. We went through a hectic initi-
ation so that we could be worthy of our rank and we made it!
Our class has some outstanding students and we claim two

' we are a very ambitious group, always looking for something

Junior Class Play
"!fIe 5
November Z9-30, l95l, the Junior class of Forest High School gave a
delightful, entertaining version of the ever popular play-TATTLETALE4
written by Anne Coulter Martens.
TATTLETALE, a clever family comedy, was acted out admirably by the
cast in such a fashion that the audience was sorry to see the final curtain
close.
We salute the Juniors on their inspiring performance and wish them
every bit of luck in their coming Senior
year.

The Future Homemakers of America is the national organization of
pupils studying homemaking in junior and senior high schools of the United
States and Territories. As an integral part of the program of home econom-
ics in the schools of America it offers opportunity for the further develop-
ment of pupil initiative in planning and carrying out activities related to
homemakng.
The Future Homemakers of America brings together state groups inter-
ested in and working toward better home and family living, provides oppor-
tunities to share in solving problems important to home life, and sponsors
group projects, local, state and national in scope, it increases opportunities
for the development of leadership and intelligent participation so much
needed in a democratic society.
The emblem of the Future Homemakers of America is octagonal in shape
and bears the name of the organization, "Future Homemakers of America,"
around the top of the plane while around the lower side of it is the motto,
"Toward New Horizons." ln the center there is a house supported by two
hands which symbolizes that the future homes of America are in the hands
of its youth.

Purposes:
To develop competent, aggressive, rural leadership.
To strengthen the confidence of farm boys in themselves and their work.
To participate in cooperative effort.
To encourage and practice thrift.
To encourage and provide for the development of organized rural res
creational activities.
Activities:
Since our year begins June l, our first activity for the year took place in
July. At that time we attended a baseball game in Cleveland. Numerous
other activities in which we participated were a hay ride with the F.H,A., a
banquet with the men of the faculty, a pest hunt and banquet, Christmas
party with the F.H.A., Parliamentary Procedure Contest, Parent, Son and
Daughter Banquet, and attendance at the State FEA. Camp. ln April two
boys applied for State Farmer and one for American Farmer. Last, but not
least, we entered the State Judging Contest at Columbus.
ln our struggle to earn some money, we raised a field of corn, sold cards
and candy, and sponsored a sausage supper and a bake sale. Now we are

Forest High School Band
I
c gk' ,Q 'W
At the opening of school, we donned our working clothes and began to practice hard
for the coming football season. Our first appearance was at the Preview at Upper Sandusky.
Two of the most exciting games this season for the band were the Kenton and Ada
games. October 5 was the game with Kenton and also the Homecoming game. This was a
very important game, not only because it was Homecoming, but because Forest and Ken-
ton have always been great rivals. With all the football boys' spirit they won easily. The
band used their lights for the first time this year at this game.
lt seems that every year at the Ada game it has either snowed or rained. This year
was no exception. By the time we arrived at Ada, it was snowing hard. The Ada and Forest
Bands played the "Star Spangled Banner" together. Many of the valves on the instruments
were frozen and the members were unable to play them. lt had snowed so hard and was
so bitterly cold that the half-time show was called off. We couldn't help but feel sorry for
both football teams. lt was SO COLD!
ln January the band lost their instructor, Mr. Thomas Shellhammer, to the Army. For
a time we were unable to find an instructor but we found there was talent in our own band.
Thomas Kellogg, a junior, took over the band and did on excellent job. During his time as
instructor, the band played at the Farmers' lnstitute. Here, the public found out how proud
they really are of Forest High School's Band.
The Board of Education was very fortunate to find Mr. Ralph Balmer ro take over the
position of director. Under the capable direction of Mr. Balmer, the band competed in the
contest in April and played at Baccalaureate in May.
The band can not possibly express their appreciation of the work that the Band Moth-
ers' have done this year and in previous years. We only hope that a big THANKS! could help
just a little.
Members of the band are as follows:
Flutes: Mary Jane Forney, Sharlene Spearman. Clarinets: Mona Fortney, Betty Jones, Jean
Hines, Marcia Staley, Audrey Switzer, Miriam Mentzer, Sally Edgington, Alice Jolliff, Geral-
dine Humphrey, Rosina Kaser, Carolyn Clinger, Pat Peart, Kay Kratt, Mary Spencer, Jeanette

The Mixed Chorus this year is an organization of 45 girls and lO boys
under the direction of Mr. Thomas Shellhammer the beginning of the year
and Mr. Ralph Balmer the latter part of the year. Mr. Shellhammer was
called to the service in January, and although the loss was great, Mr. Balmer
has very successfully taken over the work as music instructor.
The chorus had practiced very hard during the month of December. They
were prepared to give "The Christ Child" and Fred Waring's arrangement of
" 'Twas the Night Before Christmas" but due to the weather conditions,
school was unable to be in session and the musical was called off.
Members of the chorus sang and danced in the minstrel given March 13,
and l4. This successful event was sponsored by the Band Mothers for the
purpose of raising money to buy new instruments.
The annual contest in April, a Spring Musical, and Baccalaureate will
complete the activities of the Mixed Chorus for the school year.
The music students want to wish Mr. Shellhammer the best of luck in his
Army career, and also, to acknowledge the marvelous work Mr. Balmer has
done.
Homecoming
The date of the annual Homecoming game and dance fell on the night
of October 5, 1951. Before a crowd of 1500, the Rangers rose to victory with
a score of 32 to 18 over the Kenton Wildcats to start the evening on its way
to being a complete success.
Chosen by her school mates, Carolyn Baum took the honor of Home-
coming Queen with a fellow senior, Janice Musgrave, and a junior, Wanda
Musgrave, as her attendants.
The queen wore a black velvet dress with a white lace inset at the top
trimmed with rhinestones. She wore black suede pumps. Her attendants
wore gold corduroy dresses trimmed in black velvet.
The queen and her attendants made their entrance on the football field,
riding slowly in a red convertible, owned and driven by Claire McVitty. They
rode to the center of the field. Then their escorts, Raymond Weber and
Everett Woolley, accompanied them through the aisle formed by the Forest
Band to the microphone where Beth Alguire, after a short speech, presented
them with gold mums.
After their appreciation was expressed, Carolyn, Janice, and Wanda
took their places in a reserved section where they remained to view the
football game.
Following the game, the queen and her attendants returned to the gaily
decorated gymnasium. There the crowning of the queen and Homecoming
dance were to take place. Accompanied by their escorts, they entered the
gymnasium, and through an archway formed by the students, they crossed
the floor and ascended to the stage where Carolyn Baum was crowned
Homecoming Queen of 1951-1952 by Everett Woolley.
Welcomed to the dance, also, were those from Kenton who had attended
the game.
The three girls, the queen and her two attendants, want to express their
appreciation and thank those who helped to make this night one of the hap-
piest and most complete nights of their lives.

Football
We were pleased at what we saw in the Prevue game played at Upper Sandusky. Our
team played Richwood and won by a score of l4 to O:
We opened our regular season by a win over the Elida Bulldogs in a league game.
The Rangers scored early and were ahead at the half 24-O. Elida made 7 points in the final
quarter which gave us the victory 31-7.
In the next game with the Pandora Fleetwings, the Rangers scored in every quarter
while holding their opponents outside their 35 yard line. The final score was 45-O.
Still on the victory trail the following week, the Rangers subdued the Delphos Jeffer-
son Wildcats 47-ZO with many substitutes seeing action.
With Kenton furnishing the opposition for the Homecoming game, a large crowd was
present to witness this contest which always furnishes plenty of thrills. However, our team
made the occasion one of rejoicing by handing the Kenton Wildcats a 32 to I8 beating.
This was our first non-league game.
Lafayette fell next before the rapid moving Rangers. Although they tried hard and
gave us a few bad moments, the final score was Rangers 40-Lafayette l4.
Things were going too smoothly for the Rangers and on Dod's night trouble caught up
with them. Columbus Grove, after trailing most of the way came back strong in the closing
minutes to upset the Rangers i3-l2. Our boys tried desperately to pull the game out of the
fire by a field goal in the last play of the game but were unsuccessful. This was our first
league loss.
Spencerville felt the wrath of the rebounding Rangers and were defeated l3-7.
Our boys stepped outside the league for their annual game with Ada. The Rangers,
remembering scores of the past, took Ada's measure by a score of 42-O.
Since our standing in the league could not improve by winning, the game with Shaw-
nee did not carry the thrills of the former games. This game found the Shawnee Indians
scalping the Rangers to the tune of I9-l4.
The league loss to Columbus Grove, who were tied only once and not defeated at all,
pushed the Rangers into second. Even though seven Seniors are leaving the squad, the
prospects for the coming year in the North-Western Conference League are good.

Basketball
The Forest Rangers started the season with a win over the Mount Victory
Green Devils when we met them on their floor December 7, l95l. The
score was 58-42.
Next we handed Marseilles their first defeat of the season. This was a
non-league victory for Forest played on the Marseilles floor. The final
score was 64-54.
Roundheua met us next here at home and we ran away with the game
with a score of 82-57. This was our second league win.
There were games scheduled with Ada and Rushylvania but both were
cancelled because of bad weather.
The Forest Rangers handed the Alger Eagles a 79-56 loss and gained
their third league win.
Arlington traveled to Forest to lose to the Rangers in a hard fought
game with a close score of 58-52.
The Forest Rangers, playing their best ball during the first period, de-
feated the Dunkirk Pirates on their floor by a score of 57-39.
Reserve
SEATED: Raymond Woolley, Joseph Conley, William Parsell, Elmer Seymour, Eugene Anspach.
STANDING: Bill Holtzmuller, Bill McDaniel, Franklin Hemmerly, James Johnson.
The Forest High team smothered Dola with a score of 89-33 in a game played on the home
floor. This gave the Rangers their seventh victory of the season and their fifth league victory.
The Rangers won over Salem by a score of 68-60 in the next game. This, too, was played
on our own floor.
Our next league game was with Ridgeway. Ridgeway led at the half by a score of 36-34
but Forest held them down to seven points in the last half, showing strong defense work. Forest
won with a final score of 70-43.
To give the Rangers their tenth straight win, they defeated Wharton by a score of 46-39 in
in a comparatively slow-moving game.
In the next game with McGuffey, both the Reserve and Varsity teams were handed their
first defeat of the season. McGuffey won by a score of Sl -49. This tied Forest and Alger for
league honors. Both had a 6-l won, lost record.
Our last two games were non-league games. Forest again beat the Dunkirk Pirates with
a score of 70-44 and then climaxed the regular season by a thrilling 70-68 victory over Syca-
more, champions of the Wyandot County League.
The Varsity team traveled to Ada to play in the county tournamen.. and came out as run-
ners-up, being defeated once more by McGuffey, S8-55, who took the honor of tournament
champions.
Next we went to Celina to play in the district tournament. In the first game, we won
over Rockford with a score of 49-47, but we were defeated by Delphos St. Johns, 55-48, on our
second trip. And thus, our basketball season for l95l-i952 was ended.

The Student Council
The Student Council has been very successful in its many activities of
the past school year. Its members are elected from each of the high school
classes as follows: one member by the students, one by the faculty, and the
third member is the class president.
The Council started the year with a bang on October 25, l95l, by or-
ganizing a pep rally for our football team. Near Christmas, letters were
written to the servicemen of the community and were found to be greatly
appreciated.
The noon hour gym schedule, hall monitors, patrol boys, and school
librarians were set up by the Student Council.
Due to snows, the Student Council did not sponsor the Christmas Dance
after the Rushsylvania basketball game as had been planned. tBoth were
cancelledl However, they sponsored a Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and a
short dance after the inter-class basketball tournaments. These dances pro-
vided the money which will, in the future, start a school phonograph record
library. Also, the Council discussed and promoted the dancing lessons which
the school curriculum now offers. We have found that these lessons make
our dances much more enjoyable.

up the library and keeping the students quiet. l?l
Mr. Baum gave the Council a talk on the athletic financing of our
school. lt was very interesting, and shall, no doubt, be a great help in the
future.
All in all, we have enjoyed being representatives of the student body,
and hope that our efforts have helped in many ways.

Thomas J. Shellhammer
Mr. Shellhammer came to Forest from Tiffin, Ohio, where he
was an alumnus of Heidelberg College. He not only taught in Forest
but also played for many churches and directed their choi-rs.
We are very sorry to lose Mr. Shellhammer to the United States
Army. He made many friends in the short time that he was here and
proved himself a capable musician.
We thank him for his splendid work at Forest High and wish
him Good Luck in his future life.

No, they haven't been committed - - - yet! . . . What a place ta dream in! . Gee, girls,
it looks like more fun! . , , Mary Jane, aren't you forgetting your responsibilities? . . .
Wanda and Pat, in their more tender years! . . . Could this be the Baum family? . . . Hup,
hup, hup, what an advertisement! . . . Initiation can't even keep "Bill" from being written
all over Audrey's face . . . Janice and her chew-chew-bubble gum . . . Bill, with that "come
hither" look . . . Our Norm, on the "last mile home" . . , Hey, Wanda, what's up, got a bite?
. . . That male material in the Frosh class just can't be beat . . . lt's a bird, it's a plane,
no, by gosh! lt's a fly ball . . . We wonder if Sharlene finished the whole job? . . . And
we all watched the birdie . . . Look who is top man on the totem pole! . . . Wasn't Barbara
P. darling in her babyhood? . . . What, where, when, and for Pete's sake, why? . . . Those
daring Senior girls-fbet somebody got wetl . . . Such a mess! . . .
