In August of 1951 a sornewhat young uneducated group of Z5 oathercd together
to take a tour around the world by F H S Alrlmes Arnong those who appeared to
board the plane were Lyle Lut Gary Edw ards Charles Strorg Ttmmy M1ller
Terry Plckrell Jack Dunkerson Olwer Sorenson Ph1ll1p Dav1s Billy Plckrcll Larry
Baudler Donald Shannon Gary Hansscn Lorrame Darlmg Mary Lou Brown Norma
Rlce Suzanne Eshelrnan Norma Snadge Susan Ehrenfrled Connle Hall MdYC1a Warner
Shlrley Gruber Lavon Queck Phy ll1s Van Vleet Rayxnond Farmer and Pat Purdy
The crew members for the tour were Supermtendent Anthony Blankers Ln the pllot s
seat Mr Hertz m the co pllot s seat and Mr Eshelndan Mr Dunlap Mrs Homan
Mr Hayden and lwllss Welr completed the 1n1t1al crew Raymond Farrner and Mary
Lou Brown saw 1 pretty llttle xsland and dec xded to leave us so they parachuted out
We found two stowaways whlch turned out to be Beverly Schewman and Sonja W atson
Sonja however later declded to board another plane
Headmg down the runway on the second lap of our Journey M1ss Welr and Mrs
Hornan dec lded to take a plane back home and two new crew members came runnmg
to f1l1 the vacancy Tl ey were Mxss Shade and Mr Wollenhaupt Ju t as wc were
leavmg Jun Campbell came rushlng through the gates and jomed us Don Shannon
heard h1S fanfuly pagmg llIT1 so he left the plane Beverly Schewan forgot her luggage
and went back for It but she was too late to catch us We lost Phxlllp Davls as we
were gomg over the South Polc
As we landed to refuel we met Mr Manson a new co pllot as a replacement for
Mr Hertz Mrs Waymzre Mr JUSTICE Mr Emmons and lVl1bS Hubbard replaced
the follow1ng crew members Mr Wollenhaupt Mr Hayden M1ss Shade and Mr
Dunlap As we started the motor Charles Strong was called to another axrport
On the last lap of our Journey as we were headed home Mr Blankers took a
pos1t1on wzth another alrlme and Mr Manson took over as p1lot We had to f1nd a
new co pllot and Mr Fr1zze1l came rushmg to our rescue Mr Dodds saw that we
needed more help at the controls so he Joined us Mr Emmons decxded lt was tune
for hun to gxve up h1s flymg career but Mr Stelpflug was waltmg to contmue the trip
wlth us We were halfway home when Mr Stelpflug recewfd orders for another as
slgnment We found MISS Johnson ready to help us onward
We landed on May 19 mn 1955 after a four year tour whlch was erqoyable as well
as educatlonal

Fontanelle home coming was celebrated with a big parade in the afternoon led by
the school band and followed by the floats built by each of the high school classes The
entire student body marched behind the floats in the parade around the town square
After the victory over Menlo in the home coming game the queen was crowned at a
beautiful ceremony in the decorated gymnasium The queen led the grand march at the
dance accompanied by the Tom Kelsay orchestra
The senior class was rewarded with first prize for their float by the businessmen
The sophomore class followed with second and the freshman and junior classes were tied
for third place The traditional pep rally was held with a bonfire at the football field the
night before the home-coming A chili supper followed at the schoolhouse

out 1n the decoratlons program and menu
The semors as honored guests entered a softly hghted rose garden through
an arched trellls covered wxth clufnbmg roses A rose covered stone uall sur
rounded the garden and m the center was a small rock garden A small plcket
fence cox ered xx xth yellow roses enclosed a blrdbath settled m the center of a
beautliul mult1c olored rose bed The south end of the gym contamed a small
pond and a stretch of lawn In the background a full moon shone through the trees
The banquet was prepared by the mothers of the Junzor class and served
by members ol the Sophomore class
The program for the banquet was presented by Larry Raper who acted
as toastmaster
