They accomplished this by defeating Sequoia s once and Alder twice. Their only defeat came in their first meeting with Sequoia, Kevin Jones throws a pass against Sequoia, Every year the Drill Team represents Fontana Junior High in various parades in Southern California. They march and do routines in such parades as Fontana Days, Orange Show, Gardena, Chino, Homecoming, and special events at the high school. It was to acquaint the seventh grade students with the school. In a few weeks, the CandySale began, Students gi selling the most candy won radios. After-school activities included many exciting football games with post-g ame celebrations. Students had the oppor- tunity to participate in the clubs of their choice. On October 11, Journal- ism students attended a Yearbook Workshop at Chaffey College. An as- sembly demonstrating fencing was held during the last week of January. s 3' 26 wail?- The Royal Court of this year's annual Christmas Dance reigned amidst sparkling tinsel and the eerie blue light, giving good reason for the theme, "Mystic Mood." Leading the students into the magical world was a small staircase covered in sparkling angel hair, while the music of Casaba spun a spell that entwined all. Blue and white streamers floated over this winter wonderland. Twin flocked Christmas trees, beside the thrones, added to the already abundant beauty. Bared of leaves, tree branches were dressed in tinsel, mounted, and set about the dance floor. The highlight of the evening came when Dave Erickson and Kim Bray were crowned King and Queeng Don Hudson and Robin Mead ruled as eighth grade prince and princessg and John Rincon and Penny Piper reigned as seventh grade prince and princess. Wilhoit is principal of Fontana Junior High. He has been with the school district for 23 years teach- ing English, history, science, and math, and was once the superintendent of schools. In his spare time, Mr. Wilhoit enjoys swimming and golfing. Mr. Earl S. Davis, the assistant principal, has been with the district for 10 years and has taught history and physical education. Mr. Davis was one of the key organizers of the Gridiron Club. Being sports-oriented, he likes to hunt, fish, and play golf. Mrs. Joan Hogan is the secretary for the principal and assistant principal and the public receptionist. Her responsibilities include the handling of all school cor- respondence idbrbg uri' iiibtfxvxfi, 5 Q 9, SEfbLLi3LQJCf J I l Administrative Staff ! l Counselors Help Students Solve Problems 3 v Any problems concerning schedules and classes are dealt with by Mr. Ronald Baldwin and Mr. Frank Arm- strong. They assist students every day with counseling, schedule changes, and the planning of schedules for the next year. The two counselors also accompany the MGM students on all of their field trips. At left, Mr. Baldwin speaks with parent on phone. At right, Mr. Armstrong talks with Mr. Davis at P. T.A. meeting. Library And Office Pla Important Role In School Life Mrs. Barbara Eroe is in charge of the school library. Each period there are library assistants to locate and check books and to run errands. The library is open to students before and after school to check out books. Classes are also allowed to study there dur- ing school. Mrs. Ann Rotolo is the attendance clerk. She must know where each student is every period of the day. Mrs. Rotolo shares an office with Mrs. Lundell, the school nurse. When the nurse isn't present, Mrs. Rotolo substitutes for her. She also mimeographs the Fountain. Mrs. Toni Read is the secretary for the counselors. She keeps all student records and takes care of enrollment and transcripts, Mrs. Read also records the students' grades. Individual Needs Of Students Are Met By Special Services Any student in the school who has dif- ficulty in pronouncing words can go to Mrs. Helen Helm, the speech therapist. Her services are available to students with hearing problems also. Mrs. Sophia Lundell, the school nurse, administers first -aid in a school emer- gency. She gives students hearing and eye tests and keeps the school health records.. Cafeteria And Custodial Staff i l The cafeteria staff prepares lunches and food at the snack bar. Members of the staff are Mrs. Nettie Zap- pia, Mrs. Lea Kirkland, Mrs. Pauline Get- Mrs. Euphemia Davies, and Mrs. Rose Bonnie. The custodial staff consists of two daytime workers and four night workers. In seventh grade, students take high, average, or basic math. Geometry, algebra, and basic math are ninth grade courses, 1 1 English is a required subject which is divided into high, average and low at all grade levels. Ninth grade students with a recommendation have the op- portunity to substitute journalism for English. E l This year a change took place in the curriculum of the Science Department. Ninth graders are now required tc take a full year of science, as opposed to the one semester formerly required, Biology and chemistry are studied by the ninth graders. Seventh and eighth grade students are required to take science for one semester. History is divided into three categories. Western European history is covered in seventh grade. United States history and the Constitution are studied in the eighth grade. In the ninth grade, Ancient to Modern history is covered. ,. - LLL, Spanish is offered at all grade levels. In the seventh grade, students take either Conversational Spanish, a semester course, or Spanish IA, which is a year course. Eighth and ninth grade students have a choice of any three, depending on their previous knowledge of Spanish. French and German are languages offered only to eighth and ninth graders. This course helps build character while strengthening the body. lt encourages students to display good sportsmanship and teaches them the importance of teamwork. Craftsmanship skills are taught in all four of the shop classes. Wood shop, metal shop, electric shop, and drafting are offered to all eighth and ninth graders. Girls sss study sewing, cooking, interior decorating, and hygiene. 5 SSE Typing is an elective for eighth and ninth grade students. Eighth graders take Personal Typing. Ninth grade students have their choice of either Pers onal Typing or Advanced Personal Typing. Drama introduces students to creative expression through action, words, and the basic emotions. The course is offered to eighth and ninth graders. Stu- dents create original skits in class, using their knowl- edge stud of the world around them. Together with the Drill team and cheerleaders, the band marched in the FOHI Homecoming Parade, Chino Christmas Parade, Orange Show Parade, Gardena Loyalty Days Parade, and Fontana Days Parade. They also played in two concerts held during the Spring Festival, one held at the high school, and the other held at Fontana Junior High. Expanding Music Under the direction of Mr. Eugene Vacher, the Orchestra has given many fine perform- ances this year. For their first presentation, the orches- tra played in the a nnual Chr i s t m a s program. The orchestra also played in the Spring Concert at FOHI. Many members of both the band and orchestra partici- pated in the San Bernardino y County ,Band and Orchestra i Clinic.
