dollar and seventy-five cent savings bond from the profits we made giving a puppet show. In the fourth grade
Miss Roberts taught us. She introduced us to more complicated versions of history fso we thoughtj. Mrs. Broyles
was our fifth grade teacher. Here we learned fractions and long division. For part of the fifth grade we were
taught by Mrs. Causy. In the sixth grade Mrs. Narney and Mrs. Griffin were our teachers. Many remember this
year because of two things. The next year would be high school and that year it seemed we made South American
booklets all year long.
In the fall of 1947 we entered Foley High School. Everything was different and new. Instead of one room we
had to change for different classes and different teachers. lt did not take long for us to get used to this arrange-
ment. Miss Jackson and Mr. Emmett were our homeroom teachers. This year we came in contact with other
new students from Bon Secour and Magnolia Springs. In the eighth grade we were divided into three sections.
They were: Mrs. Sikes, Miss Steedly and Mrs. Demarlo rooms. These were our homerooms for the eighth year Of
school. When we entered the ninth grade it was very exciting because we could choose a few of our subjects.
Miss Gilmore and Mr. Robinson were our homeroom teachers. ln the tenth grade we again added to our class by
receiving students from Elberta and Summerdale. This year we also had more elective subjects. Also we could
participate in the Beauty Pageant this year. We had to give the prom for the Seniors which we gave at Paradise
Beach. We raised the money by selling magazine subscriptions. Mrs. Smith, Mr. Fleming and Mrs. Morgan
were our homeroom teachers. The next year we were in the eleventh grade. This year we gave the Banquet for
the Seniors from the proceeds of the Annual Beauty Pageant. Mrs. Nelson, Miss Gilmore and Mr. McFerrin were
our homeroom teachers.
And now at last we are Seniors. Our sponsors are Mrs. Elsa Britton and Mr. R. L. Smith. This has been a
most joyous year with only one dark spot in it. We had to have an Econ theme in every sixth week, we had to
order rings, invitations, hear talks from college representatives, have a few parties, put on the Senior Play, go
to the Prom and Banquet, get in copies for the Annual, elect various arid Surldry POSiri0r1S. rake terrible 511315.
get out a week before everybody else, and last but not by far least, spend four glorious days touring around
Alabama in a big Greyhound bus.
Thus, for twelve years, we have sailed close to shore, but now we are ready to set our sails for the open sea.
EDITORS MESSAGE
We, the Blue and Gold Staff, are proud to present to you our 1953
Blue and Gold. This book has caught glimpses here and there, so that
in years to come the activities of this school year at Foley High will
not be dimmed and will not fade from memory.
In later years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the
many smiles, sorrows, and dreams of '53, we shall be content,
knowing that we have done the thing we were called upon to do.
Sincerely yours,
Emily Collins
