HI TORY
Can you rmagrne the teacher s drsyeust on September 1 1931 when they were
flced by a cryrng and frantrc group of 6 year olds? lt was on thrs lay that INOQI
of the tradultes of '49 started therr struggle for freedom Nlrss Xoung and Xlrss
lierser were the vrctrms chosen to lead thrs bunch of cryrng chrldren who were
lost and practrcxlly scarel to death wrthout therr mothers The 'alphabet was a
struggle for nost of us and we pot sltxshctory on our frnal report 1f we learned
to count to '1 hundred
The next year Xlrss Rhodes and Xlrss Qaxe were our capable leaders lhey
advanced us further by teachrng, us to spell brg, words such is pun cattle and
mrce We became better acquarnted wrth our classmltes and school lrfc wxs 1ll
fun for us
Due to crrcun stances beyond our control we yentured rnto the thrrd pride
Probably the brybgest thrng, that we met wrth were our multrplrcatron tables Read
mg wrrtrng and arrthmetrc was our theme Nlrss Alexander and Mrs Bennett
never seemed to trre of us and were always ready to help
The fourth grade IS when trouble re llly began W orrres of homework began to
haunt our feeble Funds fkctrvrty perrod was our favorrte trme and we parnted
prctures on glass Xlrss Ruple and Nlrss Mobley were our teachers Xlrss Ruple s
class and the more rntellectual members of Mrss Nlobley s class went to Nlobrle
on a srght seernb tour
In the frfth grade the pr1nc1pal s wrfe Nlrs lladley and Nhss Smrth taught us
hrstory scrence spellrng and we undertook the learnrng of fractrons l'ach day
'ifter lunch perrod we had to rest whrch was slow torture to us then But rt should
be made a practrce rn hlgh school
We burlt Qpanrsh markets rn our rooms 1n the srxth grade and sold Qpamsh
trrnlcets Nlrs Crrrffrth s class was away from tlhe mun burldrnps rn what 19 now
Nlr Bryant s home 'Vrss Ruple s class was rn what rs now the typrng room W
studled the I nrted States and South An errca The year before we graduated from
grammar school they elrmrnated graduatron ceremonres
Of 'ill the confusron you have ever seen the fth grade topped rt all lt seemes
odd to us to change classes and to earn a half credrt for playmg rn physrcal ed
Nlrs Orr and Nlrs Vlrngard were our home room teachers and taught us 1n most of
our classes The graduates of Magnolxa 'iprrnrs grammar school jorned us as we
began our hrbh school career Nlr 'Vcbowan became our prrncrpal at Cshrrstmas
when Nlr Hadley and Nlr l yfda our former prrncrpal and a5r1culture teacher left us
