CLASS HISTORY Q' PAT CROSBY HISTORIAN V N! 2' On a brlght sunny mornmg lI1 September 1936 we started to school Some of us had sh1ny,beam1ng faces, some were glowermg, and some were frankly scared to death After arr1v1ng and reglstermg, we were d1v1ded 1nto two sectlons and our school career had begun ln M1ss Young s sect1on lt was a dally occurrence for J oe LaFlam to run away and be brought back a llttle Whlle later by h1s mother! M1ss Thompson held the rems 1n the other sect1on ln the second grade we lost some of our classmates and gatned new ones Our teachers were M1ss Rhodes and Mlss Saxes We were very proud of our now ac compllshment learnmg to tell t1me We were lntroduced to the mysterles of the mult1pl1cation tables 1n our thxrd year Our teachers were Mrs Bennett and MISS Golson, but we lost Mlss Golson who left us to go to Porto Rlco We studled Geography, and Erdlst Chavers made a model of a Dutch house of wh1ch we were very proud Our fourth grade teachers were M1ss Ruple and Mrs Chambles By th1s tune we were b gmnmg to feel that we were upper classrnen and to look down on the flrst graders as bables We were all del1ghted over the erect1on of the swmgs on Mlss Sm1th taught us all how to smg when we were m her class At our Val entme Day party we had a smgmg contest and Mary Loulse Polk won Mrs Crosby and Mrs Jones,our room mothers, were the judges Bllly Osborne sang Wabash Cannon Ball' and won second pr1zel 1 Mrs Chambles taught the other sectlon of our class and Mrs Hadley took over part of the Job durmg the latter half of the year Our beloved Prmclpal, Mr Bennett died and the whole school felt the effect of h1s death It was durmg thls year that the Bankhead Tunnel was opened and one of the hlgh l1ghts of the year was our tr1p to Moblle through the new tunnel, m the Sprmg to see the azaleas and v1s1t the Coca Cola bottllng plant The bulldmg of the cafeterla was begun ln the slxth grade our teachers were Mrs Grlfflth and M1ssGlor1a Ruple, s1s ter of our fourth grade teacher Th1S year we studled South Amerlca and gave a program 111 chapel on lt 111 wh1ch we dressed H1 costumes and sang 'La Cuchara c a South Amer1can Way and var1ous other songs PTOQTGSSIVG Educat1on was mfull SW1I1g by th1s t1me and to people outslde the school, our school day seemed to cons1st of Conferences and Rest Per1odsl The seventh grade IS one whlch w1ll stand out H1 our memory as the most mlxed up grade mour school llfe One sectlon had Mrs Wmgard, whom we kept all year, but those of us who started out 111 M1ss Dundun s room soon found ourselves chang mg teachers every few weeks for days, as lt seemed to usb Mlss Dundun left at the end of the f1l'St sux weeks andour homeroom teacher became Mrs Merle Ross Unfortunately, however, Mrs Ross was slck qulte a b1t and we had substltute t s most of the ear We got our f1rst mtroductlon to Mrs Robmson th1s vw . The e1ghth grade seems to have been a happy, falrly uneventful year M1ss Dean from Falrhope and Mlss Shaver were our homeroom teachers, and We had study hall for the fxrst tlme The glrls had M1ss Shaver for then' PhyS1C3.l Educa t1on teacher and we learned the meanmg of the term Udl'9SSl.I1g out' The next year we were thr1lled to death at bemg able to choose some of our subjects Engllsh, CIVICS Physlcal Ed Sz Health were reqmred, and we had a cholce of Agrlculture or home Economlcs Alabama Hmstory, a.nd Mathematlcs Our homeroom teachers were Mrs Whlte and Mrs Robmson We had a number of new students from Elberta It was our duty to g1V9 the Prom when we were Sophomores We sold maga zmes and sponsored glrls basketball games to ralse the funds We lured Chff Wheeler and has orchestra to furnlsh the muslc and decorated the aud1tor1um to represent an Easter scene Thls year we had our flrst opportunlty to elect cheer leaders, and we chose Elame Bryant from M153 Shaver s sectlon and Jean East burn from Mrs Morgan s From Summerdale had come qu1te a few new students It d1d not take them long to become acquamted, however, and we soon began to feel that they were old fr1ends Blll DeLoach was our presldent when we were Ln the eleventh grade Our home room teachers were 'Coach Meredlth and Mrs Howell They h lped us put on the .Tumor Semor Banquet at whlch Bobby Davls was Master of Ceremonles The theme for the Banquet was aclrcus and the audltorlum was full of confett1 stream ers balloons and pennants We ordered and recelved our class rmgs th1s year and had qulte a b1t of trouble gettmg everytlung stralght about how much was due on them Some of us lost them promptly' To represent our class as cheerlead ers we chose Franc1s Lewls and Betty Reynolds Sh1rley Fltzgerald, a new stu dent who had come to us from Brrmmgham, was chosen as May Queen to represent Foley School Jn the annual May Day celebratlon H1 Daphne Senlors at lastl At last the prlvllege of bemg f1rst to get out of chapell I Th1s year was qu1te a full one for most of us w1tl'1 cred1ts to make up, Sl.X weeks Econ themes and the lmke not to mentlon all the extra currlcular act1v1t1esl We were busy glvmg the Senlor Play and preparmg for graduatlon too Among the many thmgs whlch stand out 1I'1 our year are the Football Banquet Kld s Day the J un1or Semor Banquet and Sophomore Sen1or Prom the Senlor Play preparmg the Annual and the many, many electlons whlch we held!
