On September 8th, 1953 a group of
34 eager, inexperienced, aspiring,
young girls were drawn from the
farms, villages, and cities of Ohio and
Michigan and one even from as far
away as West Virginia to Flower Hos-
pital to begin three years of special-
ized education. It all began with the
34 innocents traveling by bus daily at
7:30 A.M. out to the citadel of learning,
Toledo Universityg where for 18 weeks
we took our basic courses in physiol-
ogyg anatomy, psychology, microbiol-
ogy and chemistry. We carried away
with us many memories of fine pro-
fessors, long hikes from class to
class, interesting labs and lectures,
and dissected cats. Our first day on
duty, November Z3! What an event!
lf we thought we were scared out at
T.U. .......... !
Welltime passed, filled with many
parties, picnics, and lots of HARD,
HARD study and April the second fi-
nally came around, when we traded in
our skirts and blouses for caps and
fichues. At this time there remained
only 28 of the original 34. None of us
shall soon forget that moment when
Miss Rees pinned our caps on and Miss
Rehklau lighted our lamps. Nurses at
last!
But not quite. We shoved off to
special departments and vacations
were soon upon us. Before we knew it
30 more replicas of our selves one year
earlier were arriving, and we were
juniors. Now we began an intense
round of heavy classes, floor duty,
organizational work and pressing so-
cial affairs. That second year is a
rough one! Spring came again and with
it the sad, yet happy, parting of those
going on affiliation. But first a going-
away picnic at Walbridge Park and off
we went.
That summer we put on the Jun-
ior-Senior Prom with the theme of
"Country Gardens." A big success.
We were now down to Z1 members.
In August we lost our class advisor,
Miss Beck, who took apositionwith
the Grace Hospital in Detroit. We a-
dopted Mrs. Haberkamp.
Seniors at last and with that the addi-
tion ofShirley Podach, a transfer stu-
dent from St. Vincent's hospital. And
then about the biggest honor a school
or class can have. Our own Norma
Capaul was elected President of the
Student Nurse Organization of Ohio.
That really put Flower on the map.
We are all quite justly proud of her.
Our senior year was the time of sad
departures and joyful reunions as the
girls came and went on affiliations at
Toledo State Hospital and Children's
Hospital in Columbus. Many memo-
ries are retained from those places.
In January we were all quite saddened
to see our Director, Miss Rees, leave
Flower to take another position with
the White Cross Hospital in Columbus.
Soon after we lost our second class
advisor, Mrs. Haberkamp and chose
Mrs. Jastremski for our third. By
now Miss Dorcas Crossman from Tex-
as became our Director of Nursing
and a fine one at that, you-all!
ln January our class put out more
pizza in one night than Conte's must
put outin a week. How we slaved over
that hot oven down at Simms for our
movie and pizza party.
Well as the end approached we
were tired, as could be witnessed by
the number of horizontal figures on
the beds back in the "den" at Highland.
Bynow many of our members were old
married women. We thought when we
finished we would have reached the end
of the road. But now we know different.
Graduation is merely a milestone in
the long process of learning, tho' ad-
mittedly a pretty big one. Now we go
forth again, 22 eager, inexperienced,
aspiring young .......

Dec. 23, 1966
Delta, Ohio
Hi Jane,
l've so much to tell you so if my
two sets of twins, one husband, and pets
will allow me the time, l'll start.
Last week when I was Christmas
shopping in Toledo, I bumped into Kay
Tippenhauer, and we talked for hours
in the middle of a toy department.
You knew, didn't you that Norma
Caupal got so mixed up in SNAO that
when she and Gary finally tied the knot,
she named her children S,N,A, and O
followed. Kay, herself, is head nurse
on first floor at dear old Flower, which
happens to be strictly TUR's. Mary
Ann Kopp QMathenyj, in spite of all the
trials and tribulations of her wedding,
has been leading a busy and happy life.
We all breathed a sigh of relief when
she started down the aisle to the strains
of the wedding march. Kay says that
Kathy McCoy flew to Hawaii. She be-
came rather impatient waiting for Don,
and is now considered an expert hula
dancer.
I ran into Marilyn Meinen fWelchj,
but we cou1dn't stop long. She had to
get back and relieve Bing, who was
taking care of the four little "winds". He
also wanted to leave the parking lot in
her capable hands for a few hours.
While walking past the Lion's Store
I saw a darling freckled-faced, red
haired, little boy, on one of the lions,
hollering his head off. His mother
turned out to be Mary Lou Appleman.
She had brought him to Toledo to see
Santa. Alll can say is that she's braver
than I. We talked over tea and cookies
andllearned that Shirley Podach is ex-
pecting her ninth baby. She hopes it will
be another boy, so she can manage her
baseball team in her spare time. She
has spare time?
Opal Tharp started back to West
Virginia, you know, but got lost in the
wilds of Kentucky and did a little frontier
nursing. Her book about her experiences
is one ofthe best sellers list, and is ded-
icated to Dr. Seligman. Janet Baland
QSawyery is the new director of nurses
at Bowling Green. Milly Milliron, at
the same time, was made supervisor of
surgery which is very nice since she
always liked it so well. There was a
small article in the paper about Lois
"Hong Kong" Fey She was returning to
China after a short vacation at home.
There was notification concerning the
new exhibition at the Art Museum. The
artist is none other than Betty Hartman!
Everyone is just roaring over her inter-
pretation of T at A in oils. There was
also a big write up in that same paper
about Jo Platt'sfifth marriage. I guess
he is loaded with that green stuff, what
luck! One of the editorials was com-
menting onthe fine work that Lois War-
ner has been doing with the mentally ill.
Her latest treatment, rolling patients
down the hall in a barrel, is supposed
to be very effective.
The re was a big spread in Life Ma-
gazine about "Mert" Rutherford. She
and her husband grow mammoth water-
melons. Now there is a girl I better
drop in on. The "Farm Family of the
Week" was Caroline Brugger and her
husband. They have a huge farm!
Did you see wherethey've made
"Not as a Stranger" again with Zaiga
Ozolins playing the lead? Just think
one of our classmates in the movies!
RamonaStoddard is now the supervisor
of the new Central Supply Department
at Flower. Her article about a new
method of sterilization appeared in the
America.nJournal of Nursing. It seems
she uses lemon juice.
Well, Mrs. Smith, l'll let you get
back to your cooking school and music
lessons, but do try to take time to let
me know how the world is treating you.
As Ever,
Lee

"Sleepy Time Gal"
Jo meant many things to the
many people who worked with
her as a student and Graduate
at Flower Hospital. She could
very well have been called a
"Sleepy Time Gal" on the 11-7
shift. She had about .her a
cheerfulness and love of life
thatfewpeople possess. Jo was
anew Graduate and an inspira-
tion to us who are still students .
Jo will continue to be a in -
spiration even though she is not
here. She represented in her
life what every student hopes
to attain-the love of her friends
and patients as a Registered
Nurse.

In the course of our study, six months were
spent affiliating with Children's Hospital in Col-
umbus and Toledo State Hospital to enlarge upon
our expereince in pediatric and psychiatric nur-

and students from other hospitals made our stay
wonderfullypleasant and alsornade it hard to say

About the middle ofMarch the favorite
expression among most of the Juniors was
"it'shalf-done." Yes, one -halfof our train-
ing was over and as we look back it has
seemed that we've covered a lot of ground,
but looking ahead we see much more has to
be done until we, too, will wear the black
band.
Enough of reminiscing and daydream-
ing, though --we have so much happening
right now. The biggest event we have to
plan for is the Junior-Senior Banquet. Ideas
are popping and we are all working for a
success. Of course, we need money for this
and we have been putting on a talent pro-
gram centered around a candy sale.
Recruitment, too, has been a part of our
schedule.
Of course, classes have been keeping
us busy and our clinical work becomes more
advanced and technical every day.
Yes, we're over the hump now and look-
ing forward to our graduation.

We were told that there was to be a
"Chili Supper" at Flower Hospital for high
school students interested in nursing. Sev-
eral of us in our Future Nurse Club decided
to go. When we arrived we were greeted
by the student nurses in attractive starched
uniforms.
While we enjoyed the hot, tasty meal,
the student nurses chatted with us and an-
swered many of our questions concerning
nursing school. The program that followed
wasboth informative and entertaining. The
title was "This ls Your Life" and it displayed
a series of skits depicting the various high-
lights of a student nurse's life.
Our evening was concluded by a tour
through .the hospital and the two nurses'
homes.
Being a nurse sounds challenging and
looks exciting to me. I'm going to put my
application in today!

On September sixth a bewildered group
of new freshmen followed their "big sisters"
into SimmsHall and were introduced to the
rooms where they would spend their first
year.
After several busy weeks they became
adjusted to the hospital routine and the
classes at the University of Toledo.
Then came the week thatthe Freshmen
dreaded, Initiation Week. One night,
passers-by stared at characters dressed in
men's shirts, blue jeans and with their hair
in braids. The entire crew was seen scrub-
bing the sidewalk in front of the nurses'
homes. That was followed by a tour of the
hospital and laundry Qblind -fo1ded.J An
autopsy and a mock operation were also
seen.
First semester finals and working in the
hospital kept the girls busy until after Christ-
mas.
Then came second semester and along
with it more hospital work and fewer hours
at the University.
April third shone forth as the day
everyone was waiting for, Capping.

Capping was the most thrilling event
of the Freshman year. After six months of
hard work, the long awaited day finally ar-
rived. It wasa stormy evening, but nothing
could dampen our spirits as we left the
church. Our heads were held high bearing
our caps, and our way was lighted by our
Nightingale lamps, a symbol of our profes-
sion.

"Blessed be the tie that binds,
Gur hearts in Christian love.
The fellowship of kindred minds
ls like to that above .... "
Our student government can easily
be the tie that binds the students and
faculty into one. This group has, from
the bottoms of their hearts ,worked ve ry
hard in managing the business of the
school. The fellowship they have en-
joyed throughout the year will be a
lasting memory throughout their lives.

"Because the day, that stretches out for me
ls full of busy hoursg l come to Thee
To ask Thee, Lord, that Thou wilt see me through
The many things that I may have to do."
This poem could Well be the theme
of ourweekly chapel services. This is
the one time during our busy schedule
whatwe gather together as one body to
commune with the Lord in song, mes-
sages,prayer,and scripture. We thank
those who have helped us with these
services, especially Miss Hazel Smith,
R. N., and Rev. Beittel, our hospital
chaplain, and visiting ministers.

I dedicate myself today, to 'those who need
my tender care. May strength be given me
I pray, to lift the cross that others bear.
When eyes grow dim and night appears, my
faith in Him will calm their fears.
With smiles'I'll dry away their tears, keep
me worthy to serve today.

To you, Miss E Evelyn Beck, we dedicate this yearbook in hum-
ble appreciation of the many things you have done for us. During
the two years you guided us, you remained always an outstanding
representative of the nursing profession, and one after whom we
have strived to model ourselves. You were always there to answer
our questions and guide us along the path to our ultimate goal-grad-
uation-which we finally have attained. Thank you, Miss Beck, from
the bottoms of our hearts.
