As a matter of fact, this school is only a tiny part of a great educational system. We might describe education in Louisiana as a giant tree. At its roots are the State Poard of Education with 3 mem- bers appointed by . the governor and 8 elected by the , X ,1 people: the State Superintendent Fw elected by the peo- ples and the 5 6 State Legislature, which appropri- Z ates funds and levies necessary taxes. 5,1 , y f ,13 f - x 41 H' rs. 5 This mighty tree has 64 branches, one for each parish. Some are large, others small. Each branch has many twigs. The particular branch that is Sabine Parish has 14 twigs, of which Florien High School in one. No part of the tree of education is complete within itself, but each has its own distinct functions. No two branches are exactly alike, yet each is fundamentally the same. Each derives its subsistence from the roots. The State of Louisiana, the roots of the Tree of Education has the following duties and responsibilities: 1. Determines the course of study, the requirements for grad- uation, and the general education policies throughout Louisiana. 2. Determines the number and type of parish officials. 3. Levies taxes to raise money for the schools, then allocates to each parish a large part of the cost of operating the public schools and the parish libraries. 4. Establishes qualifications for public school teachers. 5. Passes and enforces the compulsory attendance law. 6. Provides free textbooks, pencils, paper and lunch room equip- ment. Since all general policies of Louisiana schools are determined by the State, the schools of one parish are more efficient or less efficient than those of other parishes only in so far as the personnel of a parish are more or less efficient that the personnel of other parishes. Let us look at the parish in which we are most interested ------ Sabine. 3 3Tn,t. 5.4: - bd 9-To fZ'j?W '3' mp ' 1- ,5 .xx 3' ' ' .1 -X5 . The Parish lies on the western boundary of the state along the beautiful Sabine River, for which it was named. Many, the Parish seat, is only a short distance from several points of historic interest. The 645,120 acres of Sabine Parish are of upland, pine hills, alluvial, and wooded lowlands, as picturesque as they are fruit- ful. Its undulating hummocks, hills, and well-watered valleys have unusual scenic beauty. Prom the time when the first land was placed under cultiva- tion in this Parish up to the present day, cotton has been its most important crop. A superior grade of corn, sugarcane for making syrup, peanuts, sweet and Irish potatoes, and all varie- ties of truck are also produced. The forests of Sabine Parish are of pine, oak, cypress, tupelo gum, and a wide variety of hardwoods. There are a number of sawmills in the Parish. The Kansas City Southern is the principal railroad through Sabine Parish, with the Texas and Pacific running across the Northeast corner. There are thirteen high schools and one grammar school in this Parish with a splendid school system which encourawes an education for all. 4 Rum! Mr. A. L. Luo ius X ,L ,iff Writ -s -in X i 'an X SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In 1937 a group of boys and girls arrived at the Florian schoolhouse to begin an entirely new life. We were awed by the large building and knew only the way from the first grade room to the outside door. Later, however, we had occasion to spend at least nine months in each classroom. Now, in 1948, we are preparing to leave this schoolhouse, probably never to return. After the first few days at school we decided that it would be best to settle down to work.Year after year we were rewarded by stepping a grade higher until we reached the seventh grade. There we met Brother V. K. Fletcher. He vas a stern teacher but at the end of the year the class was doubly rewarded by being promoted to the ninth grade instead of the eighth. Was it be- cause of the extremely intelligent pupils, or was it the new school system? Somewhere along the path we picked up the nickname of the NBaby Classn, not because we acted like babies, but because all the teachers liked to work with us and because of the small number of pupils in the class. This being our last year, we have worked harder than ever to leave a good name on the records at Florian High School. Some of the pupils who have been outstanding in attendance are Helen Lee, Laverne Slater and Bobby Lee Leach. Each girl has been absent only two days In eleven years. Bobby Lee has been absent three days. Our class officers are President--Bobby Lee Leach H! I Vice President--Ray Goss iff Secretary--Helen Lee Treasurer--Laverne Slater Reporter--Bonnie Lowe Our sponsors are: Miss Betty McLanahan H Hrs. T. M. Phillips Q Mr. L. B. Skinner W? Our flowers are white carnations. Our colors are blue and white. Our motto is: 'The strongest principle of growth lies in the human cho1ce.' Although there are only twenty-one of us, we have gradua- tion rings from five different schools--Hornbeck, Plainview, Fisher, Mount Carmel and Florien. The school year is made up 180 days. This means 56 weeks of 5 days each over a period of 9 months with 20 school days in each. The school year is divided into 6 periods of 6 weeks each. Report cards are given out at the end of each 6 weeks. A student must pass in 255 of his subjects or be retain- ed in the same grade another year. Florien High School has an enrollment of almost SOO hun- dred students. Four school busses bring 238 of these child- ren from the communities of Dess, Gandy, Toro, Sandel, and White City, as well as Florien. The Florian school bus drivers are: Hr. Clifton Davis, Mr. Kyle Salter, Mr. Gene Brown, and Mr. Bob Cook. Many Parish officials have lived in or worked in Florien. Mr. Alford and Mr. Head are fromer principals of Florien High School. Mrs. Henry attended school here. Mr. Powell is now a resident of our community. TO EVERY ONE TO WHOM WE SAID HGIMMEH Do you wonder what we are doing with all the money that you generously dug down into your pockets to find to pay for advertisements? Well, Folks, here's how it is: Advertisements and autographs brought in 6195. We paid Myers and Company of Topeka, Kansas, S286 for the publication of this book and for supplies. Carbon paper for typing, camera film, development of pictures, ink, and postage coast about 59 more, making a total of S95 for ex- penses. That leaves 391 worth of books that we must sell to come out even." Now do you see why we "kept pe-stering" you for ads? Seriously, Friends, we appreciate every penny you gave us. Your help made this yearbook possible. It is an expensive book, but we believe that the value of it cannot be measured in dollars and cents. For students this book will be a treasure house of memories. For parents it may be the means of becoming better acquainted with your childrens' life at school. For the staff a yearbook means the discovery of unrecognized talents, the accepting of responsibility, and the joy that comes from a task well done. sway am-glam ,J RALERFW f 37 XXXY5-I V A X ' "' ' ,f 1 rs t ff , X?
