The Staff of the '83 Saguaro - "Year at a Glance" attempted to preserve a few, but precious of these memo- ries. We hope that the pages of this annual will help to take a backward look at F.H.S. and will provide fond memories for everyone of us A DEDICATIQN GF: I-IONDH! Our favorite secretary as a Graduate. Could Debby have received an obscene phone call? Debby takes time fora breather and rests for a while. Queen-4. This year the annual has been dedicated to Debby Cathemer. She was born, raised, and educated in Florence. As a native she was very active in school and community activities. After Graduation in 1970, she worked in the community for 8 years. Then she started work as Secretary of the Florence High School office. Since her five years here, she has filled the posts of firefighter, counselor, financial aid and other strenuous jobs. Besides being general handywoman, she is a big supporter of High School athletics and Pep Squads. P TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION . . . . . . .7 CLASSES: SENIORS ..... . . . Mr. Hinton not only had his hands full with class being mostly seniors, but the class was led by an all-girl editor's team. We tried a lot of new things in the anuual this year, like adding several features and sections. Cissy Gutierrez was the Class Editor and Index Editor, which was quite a load. Kathy Siegal reigned as the Organization's Editor, while Kate Thomas was kept busy all year as the Activities Editor. Karen Baker was the Sport's Editor, and did a very good job of making the teams look as good on the pages as they did in action. Mima McCann had the not-so-glorious or easy job of Business Manager-Advertising Editor. Lisa Goswick, the Copy Editor, had the difficult task of typing 99 'Vi ofthe writing in the annual. Where the girls had a monopoly on the editors positions, the photographers were all guys. They took a lot of hassling from the other staff members. Keith Gardner was the Head Photographen- - e Staff deserves t of credit for the ads and annuals they sold, and the many hours spent on their layouts., ' - ' . nd Penny Jauregui-Assistant Editor had the never ending job of checking layouts, making decisions and trying to keep the class working. X . The 82-83 Florence G-.A.A. has had a good year. We started out by electing officers. Rene Goade-Pres., Andi Cordova-Vice-Pres., Penny Jaurequi-Treas., Sharon Lewis-Sec. Our membership for G.A.A. this year was 25 young athletes. Our money products this year consisted of a Valentine sucker sale in Feb. and a G.A.A. spring T-shirt sale. G.A.A. offers an organization for the young athletes of Florence High School. We hope through guidance and companionship our athletes can go on to pursue a career which is useful to them. The Lettermen club enjoyed an- other successful year because of the great attitude of the Athletes. Some of their progress was provid- ing awards and letters to our schools outstanding athletes. They also had alot to do with athletes who could not afford the high insur- ance prices. Without the help of the lettermen club many athletes who play a key role in athletics may not have been able to participate in sports due to the rising insurance prices. They spent the summer getting to know each other and raising money. Their uniforms were bought with their own money and their shoes with the money they raised. During the year they performed at pep assemblies and at half-time of the football and basket- ball games. They also supported the girls basketball team. Mrs. Carol Joyce began teaching at Florence High in the fall of 1981. During the fall of 1982 she became ill with Leukemia. After which, she stopped teaching to undergo treatment at Tucson Medical Center. She was as dedicated to teaching as she was to being a wife and mother. She was a very good teacher' as well as an exceptional woman. Many students at Florence High School never knew how to write a term paper, until the instruction of Mrs. Joyce. She was good natured, and took a lot of kidding from the students. On Friday, January 14, 1983, Mrs. Joyce passed away. Those who knew her suffered a great loss as did those who had yet to meet her. This year was no different, it was the sixth year Florence has won the Conference Champion- ship Title. Awards were given to Ar- mando Reyes for most improved, he won 2 gold medals at State in the shot and discus. Most valu- able was received by Bruce Reed who averaged at least thirty points at conference and state. At State Florence did very good. They received State Run- ner-Up against Morenci who just beat Florence by 10M points. Congradulations on the great year and keep up the good work. There were times during the season where our team played as if we might challenge for the "B" Central Conference Championship but, there were also times when we didn't even know the way to the ball park. inconsistencies plagued of Varsity Baseball team this year. Our over all record was 7-1 1, conference record 5-5 tied for 3rd place. A big plus this year was the experience gained by some of our younger playersg Doug Crawford, Joe Martinez, Mike Padilla, Louie Celaya, all Jr., J.T. Neal, Felix Cruz, Alfred Lamb, all Soph., Ricky Garcia, Frosh. This experience factor will help im- prove our team next year. Much responsibility was put on our Senior players this year and for the most part they responded well. Mike Silvas lead the team in hitting with a .429 batting average and 24 FtBl's. John Myers hit .310 with 18 FtBl's and 3 home runs. Tom Gutierrez ended his career at F.H.S. with 85 stolen bases in 94 attempts. This gains him a tie for 2nd place in career stolen bases in the State of Arizona. Other seniors on the squad were: Phillip Celaya, Ft.J. Heck, Sal Madril, Tony Segovia.
