SXZKAVAGANZA This was the eleventh annual F.H.S. Extravaganza, held on May 8th 1986. It was a very excellent display of talent, intelligence, and organization of the students of Florence High School and the faculty involved, with displays in every area of academics, talent and vocation. This event is held every year for parents and citizens of the area to come and see some of the achievements of the students at Florence High School. There were booths and demonstrations in the areas of: Art; Photography; pottery; Video Production; Creative Journal; Home Economics-fashion show; Geometric Models; Physics reports; Wood workings; Robotics; Drafting Blueprints; House Construction; Modern Problems Survey; Creative Writing; Office Simulations; Peer Counseling Project; Biology projects; Spanish projects and food booth; French projects, skits and food booth; English I IV - Odyssey and Interview projects; Welding Projects; Auto repair projects; Variety show performance by the Drama Class; Vocal performances and Stage Craft Demonstrations by the music Department; and Modern Dance by the Dance Class. Most of the young people are against drug and alcohol abuse and feel that it is not being enforced by the law. Teenage Pregnancy: Moral values need to be taught through today's liberal education and with modern technology of today. This should be prevented exceptionally here at F.H.S. Most people feel that pregnancy should be saved for marriage. Child Abuse Most people think that child abuse is a severe crime that affects all social classes and should be punished to the extreme. Some feel that it is a sickness and related to alcohol and that the abusers should be rehabilitated. It is a fact that 66 percent of all child abuse cases are alcohol related. Tobacco Use: Most people do not approve of tobacco use because it is cancer-causing and they agree it should be illegal or under government control. Some feel that the youth are the biggest abusers and they are making the wrong choice. Major Modern Problem In Our Area: Most people feel that the major modern problems in our area are teenage pregnancy and drug and alcohol abuse. They feel that these problems are the results of a lack of parental responsibilities, concerns, and influences. Above, Janet Tuley with that look of astonishment. Was it really that surprising? The time has come for all of us to say our good-bye's and start new. Ron Sanders shows off his muscles in Senior Seminar while Diane Cornelia and Susan Fitzgerald watch. We all know to graduate we must pass government, taught by Mr. Mel Smith and senior seminar, taught by Mr. Calhoun and Mr. Veatch. Some of us seniors dread government. One reason may be the big, final test you have to take at the end of semester. Really government just brings out the knowledge of knowing how the judical, legislative and executive branches work. These branches affect us each day. Maybe that's why this is such an important class. Is there life after high school? This is what senior seminar prepares us for. Most seniors like this class-perhaps the reason would be for the fact that it is more realistic. You get married, plan a budget and even carry around baby eggs. Does this all begin or end when you get married? We say it all begins here, when you graduate. Mr. Calhoun's Senior Seminar class has fun. Eric Mehring, Tammy Mohr and Carolyn Wort wait for a government class to begin. Sherri Hicks shows off her baby egg that took second place in the baby contest. ALWAYS HAVE A DREAM! In all he has sold six of his projects, ranging in prices from $25.00 to $155.00. Leon has a great future ahead of him in art with his talent. He plans to attend the Colorado Institute of Art and further his career as a commercial artist or fashion illustrator. The yearbook staff would like to wish Leon the very best and prosperity in his career and life. Good luck, Leon, and thank you for adding your talents to the yearbook. It's hard to ignore Leon Cortez when he walks into room. His enthusiasm and flamboyancy about life and how he copes with situations is a unique characteristic about him. When asked how he felt about his work being printed on this year's yearbook cover, he said: I like the idea, it gives me a better perspective on how to design professionally. Leon has always been interested in art, and has won numerous awards, including three blue ribbons in the Pikes Peak League art show, three blue ribbons of merit at the Extravaganza and a third place ribbon at the Pikes Peak League art show. The general consensus of seniors, in the advice to freshmen, was to have a good time and enjoy high school. But most seniors did admit that it is wise to take your hard classes first, so you'll have less to worry about later (as far as credits are concerned) and you can enjoy your senior year! 1. Party, always obey seniors, study, and pick on the teachers, especially Mrs. Williams and Mr. Lujan. - Sherri Hicks fulfills her dream by singing her heart out. Tammy Mohr 9. Decide what you're going to do while you're a freshman, because when you're a senior it's too late. Good luck in the future. -Michelle Parker 10. Study and don't take too many study halls. Make these next four years of your life the best you'll ever live. Don't skip or cheat; it gets you no where. -Shawna Christianson 11. Have fun and work hard, but most of all enjoy high school. -Amber Lauderdale 12. We found one impressive junior who knows. Sabrina Lenard has been competing in rodeos since first grade and in August of '85 she got the chance to go to Colorado Springs and compete in nationals. She walked away with a saddle in the breakaway roping event. In order to do this the points from her previous rodeos over the summer and the finals were totaled. Sabrina has also won two other saddles. One was in the Jr. division other 8th grade year. Along with that she won a $400.00 scholarship. She won another $400.00 scholarship the summer between her sophomore and junior year. Before Sabrina shows her stuff, she warms up with one of the two horses she rides, either Mac, or V. W., and then visualizes how she will do, hoping for the best. She not only competes in breakaway roping but also team roping, barrel racing and goat tying. She says she's nervous before a race especially the breakaway and team roping events. She has two superstitions which she believes help her win if she follows them. One is that she has a pair of lucky white pants that she always wears when she competes and she never puts her hat on the bed because it is bad luck. When asked why she likes to rodeo Sabrina replied: It's challenging and gives me a chance to meet a lot of neat people. Future plans include possibly going to college in Arizona on scholarships she has won and to participate with the college rodeo team. — Christie Warden Sabrina Lenard poses with one of the saddles she has won. Yet others look as if they had been hit by an atom bomb. Some have every kind of pop can, candybar wrapper, old moldy sandwiches from lunches forgotten long, long ago which are stuffed in every crevice conceivable. You can always tell which lockers these are because they have been condemed by the State Department of Health. The subject of junior lockers can be very dangerous especially if you have a bottom locker and the person above you has a messy locker, sometimes known as the death trap. This causes concussions and maimed students. Last but not least there are the flying doors which met with many faces this last year, causing black eyes, fat lips and bloody noses. HAVE you HSMT) It seems that some students' main concerns center around trying to get teachers off the beaten path on a wild adventure called, Homework Avoidance . It is well known that Homework Avoidance often works. But to those of us who lack the art, here are some pointers. It seems the topics that some teachers will speak about are their families, of course; gossip is a biggie, sometimes disorderly students' behavior gets a teacher off the path, (We students know there are none of those!), and naturally, what is going on in our marvelous high school. The best time to attempt Homework Avoidance is when you first get in the room, because teachers have their guards down. Students with Homework Avoidance in mind seem to throw questions left and right, hoping the teacher will latch on to one particular topic and rattle on all hour. If they keep throwing the questions, the teacher will sometimes think it is of main interest to the students and keep right on talking. Usually some wild subjects will come about in these talk sessions which can be called the melting pot of gossip. Some of the topics or one liners that students used to try and get a teacher off the subject are: Did you read about that_________in last nights paper? What did you do yesterday? Did you hear what happened to . . . ? Can you tell me about the SAT or ACT test? What did you take in college and what was that class like? How can we prepare ourselves now so we won't have an overload in college? (The last three questions are usually asked by seniors and some juniors.) Did you see the_______game Friday night? The questions above are guaranteed to work, at least once in a while! So if students forget to do their algebra, English term paper, art project or whatever, it is worth a try to gather up their courage, (What is there to lose?) walk into the classroom, look the teacher in the eye, and say, Oh . . Have you heard .. ? w ZM eCASSMOM! The answers we received are: Two Good Intelligent Friends, Terribly Great Interesting Feelings, That Good Important Feeling, The Great In Florence, Truly Great Inspirational Fun, Turtles Got Interesting Feet, Tears Give Indeed Freshness, Now of course, all of the above are right, but they're not what we're looking for. The abbreviation T.G.I.F. really stands for THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY . As you go through the long dreadful week, the only thing that keeps you going is knowing that Friday is there waiting for you. People are always tired, non-energetic, and quiet on Mondays. As the week goes on, they liven up. By the time Friday gets here, they're ready for the weekend. Above are Kenny McMullen and Slick Esau posing for a picture. Left are Steve Shoun and Julie Pyle in Mr. Lujan's Spanish class. Hope Jennings, Irene Haddock and Pant Sanders together on a Friday. Peoples actions are always better on a Friday. It's just the thought of not having to return to school until Monday. Hardly any people ever stay home on Friday nights. Everyday life of a freshman is rather exciting. You go from day to day with the same worries: Will I get initiated today? If so, by who and how? What do all those BIG seniors think of me? Am I really a nerd like they all say? Well, everyone goes through this long and boring hassle during the ninth grade. It's something we all have to live with. You just can't wait (while you're a freshman) to become a sophomore, so you can look down on the upcoming freshmen and treat them as you were treated. e v e r 1 i f y d e a y We're the class of '89 We walk tall and proud Because we're fine! The team is coached by Mrs. Corn and Mrs. Kathy Smith, who each have coached teams at the Junior High level in previous years. This year's team included fourteen students who participated in six meets. The events included uneven parallel bars, balance beams, vaulting and floor exercises. The team took a first in one meet, and seconds, and thirds, and fourths in the others. At the beginning of the season they scored a ninety-eight at a meet and by the end of the season they were up to 167 points at a meet. The team also had the distinction of sending Sabrina Lenard to state, she competed on the uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and the floor exercise. This year's team really looked good and we hope they continue to flip their way to success. WHAT MAKES A TEAM Our team is made of blue and gold, we have our numbers and they're very bold. They stand way out when you're in a crowd, and they say our team's name really proud. Our uniform is an important part of the things we wear, most of all it should be treated with special care. Next are the people to make things go better. All together, yes you see, and that's the way it should be. Playing side by side, making the ball really glide. The coach is the one who calls the plays, and sometimes it looks like a giant maze. By working out the knots and putting in a string, our coach can teach us anything. We have the best that could ever be and they're going to take us to victory. With two great coaches that could ever be, we're proud to have you Mr. and Mrs. T. Florence's volleyball team has stepped up this year from weak little serves, spikes, and coverages to powerful serves, killer spikes, and excellent coverages. The Varsity, J. V., and Freshmen had to fight for what they wanted. Each match was tough. Every point was played as the first, never giving up the ball. If the ball was on the Huskies side after four vollies, the ball would have to go back on the fifth. The team was established around the letters DT and the team was always proud to say it. It filled each of them with confidence, and good concentration. Each individual who played on the team treated each other as a part of their family. They always gave a lot of support to each other and when one was down they would bring them up. There was a lot of love on the team this year but most of all they made a place in the league for the team coming up. The football team had it's ups and downs this year. They started off a bit slow, but by the end of the year they were coming on strong, just like old times. The Huskies' football teams never gave up. They pushed, shoved, and fought for what they wanted. Each week they set new goals; most were accomplished. Florence had a terrific defense, on the other hand they had a good offense, too. The Huskies record was 3 wins out of 6 games and over all 3 wins out of 3 in league games. They are on the way back and are coming back strong. They sometimes seemed a little bit over excited to play the game, but once the gun went off, they buckled down and went to work. It took a lot of heart to keep coming back. After watching these movies they discuss some of the topics presented in tbe films, which range from science fiction to drama. The purpose of the club is to provide an opportunity for those students interested in science or computers, to meet others with similar interests, in order to talk and discuss some of the current breakthroughs that are taking place in those fields. It also allows these individuals to get together and have a good time in an atmosphere that encourages science and use of computers. Hutchinson celebrate the district playoff victory. As the year comes to a close we look back one last time before we finally say goodbye. We recall the past events that will be the memories we will always treasure. As we take out our memories, who could forget Homecoming? The football team started if off with the best game of the season. During the dance, when the Homecoming royalty was crowned and danced to the theme of Cherish was a special moment. But we were also aware that in the world terrorism was striking out at innocent people. Christmas rounded the corner, along with the winter sports season. The Huskies were once again ready to show what they were made of. The girls district play off game was an awesome and exciting game, as they fought to the bitter end and won when Jane! In late January we were saddened by the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, which resulted in the deaths of all seven crew members, including high school teacher Christa McAuliffe. Locally, our district superintendent. Dr. Halsey Cook, resigned and Mr. Vic Becco was named Interim Superintendent. In February we were in the midst of winter sports and enjoyed our last Sweetheart dance. Later we were made aware that the U.S. had bombed Libya, in response to increasing terrorist activities against Americans. Learning of the nuclear accident in the Soviet Union in April, we once again realized what a complex world we will soon become adult members of. But life at FHS was still comfortable for us with the familiar rituals of spring sports, prom, senior banquet and senior skip day. No matter how far some of us may travel from FHS, the years we have spent here will leave their mark. We leave behind childish ways and enter a world which we can add to and a future we can help shape from what we have gained here. Seniors enjoyed their meal at Merlino's Belvedere.
