One certainty is that it does exist each year and will con- tinue. Although there are sports, dances, and assem- blies each year, the mark we as individuals put on them makes each year unique. This year of our lives was a special chapter in the Never Ending Story of Florence High School. Leading the royalty She's a superb student, top 5% of her class, and she's was Shannon Waller as king and Susan Rankin as queen, just an all around superb person. Shannon Waller was tri-captain of the 84-85 football team, he's an excellent weight lifter, and he's looked up to by most of the younger football players, and other students as well. Susan Rankin is captain of the 84-85 Pom Pon sqaud. The rest of the royalty is just as outstanding as Shannon and Susan. With senior attendant Bobbi Callardo. escort Rick Birdsall: junior attendant Lydia Garcia, escort Law- rence Martinez, sophomore attendant Theresa Bustos Villigrana. escort Kevin Smith; freshman attendant Mi- chelle Snell, escort Ron Sanders. Homecoming week is full of fun! Starting it all of is slave and nerd day. There were all types of slaves, from babies to chickens to ladies of the night. Everywhere you looked there was someone dressed extremely funny. when someone cheated at the game. How would you like whipped cream all over your face and hair? Just ask one of the persons who were in the line of fire (a very sticky one)!!! Lunch time was never boring! Mr. Barber got quite upset Above.- Tonya Goff and Kathy Magnusson are all out for Nerds. 4 Above: Mike Whaley has a fancy shot for the other side of the net in balloon volleyball. Stephanie Six and Deanna Campbell pose for a picture after the powder puff game. At right: Rhonda Adamson show everyone that Florence is I! Bottom: Treese Pruitt and Lynette Dewall give a little show at lunch time. There was so much spirit during home- coming week! Most everyone joined in the fun one way or another. One thing that makes homecoming week significant was the powder puff game. The juniors and sophomores were on one team and the seniors and freshman on the other one. The game ended in a lie. After the powder puff game. everybody went over to the junior high to scream chants in front of the huge bon fire. Then all of a sudden everyone was off hand- in-hand on the snake dance. But nobody wanted to let the night die for everyone gathered together for pizza at the Lind- sey's. But all good things have to end. Everyone remembers the joys, the sor- rows. and the laughter that went along with this years homecoming week. But WAIT! There was more the next night! For the Homecoming dance was still to come! Here are our famous basketball, pom pon. and cheerleaders losing their fantastic figures by gorging themselves on a fifteen foot Sundae! As you go through each day some of the best times happen while you're in High School. These two pages are here to remind you about some of those times. Even though sometimes school was frustrating, bor- ing. and you thought it would never end. when it does you don 7 remember just the bad times, you remember all those special memories like walking through the halls with your special guy girl dressing up in crazy clothes and enjoying doing it going on all those fun choir, foreign language, band, career trips and many, many more things. $ Here are two very pretty girls? As the different teams are announced you can tell our school really supports em 7 Everyone knows our teams are champions and aren't afraid to show it. Ask anyone who has been to a Husky Pep Assembly, they 'll tell you: • HUSKIES ARE 11111 Below: Tom Camarlo was the master of ceremonies for the assemblies. 8 9 Let's Get Married! Many students think that once they are married all their dreams will come true. Senior seminar, a re- quired class explores this idea along with other realities of life. The nitty- gritty aspects of life such as budget- ing. raising children and making ethical decisions are all studied. The mock wedding held during the course of the Senior Seminar class is a high point for many. Brides and grooms participate in a wedding ceremony complete with cake and punch reception. The students come to realize that a wedding is not the end of a dream but the beginning of a totally new life style. Members of the I9S4 SS senior seminar class lie the knot. 10 Special Moments 11 Pep Band Makes Assemblies Fun Our assemblies always begin with the pledge of allegiance followed by a spirited playing of the school song by the pep band. The band really livens up the assemblies and gets everybody into the spirit of things. National School Assembly The National School Assembly pro- gram brings experts into our school to give an assembly. This year we had an expert championship roper show us how to rope. The janitors keep the school neat and clean as well as making sure our campus is clean and free of trash. They make sure that the commons area and football field grow green with grass. If it wasn 7 for them, our school would not look as attractive as it does. The cafeteria staff are the ones who keep a lot of students going and growing. In the high schools of larger cities the food is pre-packaged. The pizzas taste like cardboard and the fries and tacos are cold and greasy. The Florence cafeteria workers start cooking your lunch at 7:30 a m., allowing it to be homemade and nutritious. We at F.H.S. would like to thank these people for making our life at school just a little more pleasant. THANKS!!! 71 The cafeteria staff at F.H.S. Thanks! We Needed That Most people don 't know that we owe the low cost of our Husky yearbook to our school board. Why? Because they contribute $2000.00 each year toward the yearbook budget. While other schools charged an average of $24 a book this year, ours only cost $16. So the next time you are enjoying your yearbook, remember the school board helped make it affordable! 1984-85 School Board Members 72 Left to right. Dr. Halsey. J. Cook. Supl.: Mickey Bost. I thought it was a real honor to be chosen. Mr. Vaughn, far right, exhibits some of his award winning coaching style. J.V. Ends Season 4-6 Despite a disappointing season. Coach Vaughn and Assistant Coach Steve Shannon both feel there are some good varsity prospects on the team and look forward to coaching the players next year. 118 Six Go To State Six harriers represented Florence High School at the Slate Track meet for the 1985 season. Randy Toler, the only senior to participate for the Huskies at the state meet, took a first place Finish at the District meet in the pole-vault. The team took ten girls to the state meet, the most that has ever gone. The team had placed in every meet of the season with an outstanding first place in the Manitou Springs Invitational. and a second place at their own Husky Invitational, one of the largest meets of the season. In his first year at F.H.S. he had two events in which runners qualified for state competition. In his second season he once again had two events for runners to compete. In the third season he sent three girls to state. His fourth season saw the runners increase to seven to attend the state meet plus many school records were broken. This year's team was the best yet. The team placed at every meet and even took a first at the Manitou Springs Invitational. Ten girls qualified for the state meet in eleven events. Coach Rhoads helped his runners achieve much during his five years as coach. Although we will miss him. the pride he found in the team will help them to continue to achieve. Above. Coach John Rhoads 124 The Never Ending Memory Stephanie King 1968-1985 Each of us have battles in our lives. The big battles we fight usually come when we are older, tired and ready. Steph s battle came early-she fought it with her youth and energy. Yet when defeat was obvious, she triumphed with her spirit. She believed in the message of her favorite poem Joy Cometh in the Morning. This. too. will pass: believe it. O my heart! There will be sunlight on some distant hill: Storms cannot last forever: joy will start. And troubled waters someday will grow still. Hurt is transient; when it serves its need. It vanishes: relief must follow pain: Oh. always when the flood goes, tides recede! No sorrow ever is endured in vain. ” Whenever any of her friends had a problem, their problem was bigger than hers was. — Susan Fitzgerald She made me realize what good friends truly are and gives me courage when things go bad. — Orito Hayashi She had a smile for everybody. If you were depressed, you could always count on Steph to cheer you up. — Denise Seitz She never allowed her disabilities to overcome her love of life. — Mrs. Monett Whenever she was around us she seemed to be just herself as she had always been. I will miss her very much. — Jon Lamoreux Steph was the craziest, nuttiest best friend anyone could ask for. Everything we did we had fun at. I'm really going to miss her!” — Kathy Magnusson My special memory of Stephanie was her ability to always be cheerful and her funny laugh. — Brent Johnson Steph King won! Thanks to Steph I have grown to appreciate life more. She was the bravest person I have ever met and grown to love. — Tonya Goff Even though her life was getting darker. Stephanie always had a light, positive attitude. She showed me strength and courage that may lean on forever. — Mrs. Hecker 125 Steph left footprints in the sands of time . . She enjoyed and experienced life's steps just ahead of us! — Mrs. Orton Huskies Had A Great 126 There are so many things which make up a great school year. To some, it is catching the pass at a close football game. Others bolstered up the crowd with enthusiastic cheers. Some classes had the perfect combination of people and stand out in the memory. Assemblies bring back vivid memories to many, while for others the tense moments before competing in a cross country event spark a good thought or two. No matter how they served their school. Huskies did it with style and pride. Here are a few favorite times. Maybe one of them was yours! GARY SERFOSS - VALEDICTORIAN BRIAN OLMEN - SALUTATORIAN RUTH BOODY - WOMAN ATHLETE OF THE YEAR JON DICKEY - TOM KELLY AWARD Graduation '85 Why Can't We? On Sunday. May 26. 1985. the F.H.S. graduation ceremonies were held at the Palmer Field Stadium. The salutatori- an. The graduation address was given by Mr. Victor Becco, former principal of F.H.S.. and was an inspirational message entitled Why Can't We? The class of '85 will reach for their dreams if they can keep the positive message which Mr. Becco gave them! Following the address, the Show Choir performed We are the World under the direction of Mr. Karl Leason. Scholarships and awards were presented by Mr. Burleson and Mrs. Orton. Class valedictorian Gary Serfoss gave the class farewell speech. Then, the moment that all students prepared for came- the presentation of the class of '85 and the presentation of diplomas.
