THE HUSKY Florence High School, Florence, Colorado Act 1 26 Intermission 42 Cast And Crews 76 Act II 120 Sponsors 128 Epilogue 152 Our play portrays Florence High School, in its performance of the year 78-79. Our stars are you, the setting—Florence, the time—last year. Now turn the page and the play begins The Friends We Have 4 . .. As We Are Young . .. 7 As The Kite, The Wind ... 8 9 As Time Will Pass Our Days Here End, When Remembrance Calls Spotlight On Homecoming Royalty Homecoming royalty were crowned during halftime at the football game (1), and strolled through the upraised arc of the rifle brigade (2). The band led the way at the homecoming parade (3), and the homecoming royalty (4) are Eva Dodge, Nancy Olmen, Don Hand, Christa Harris, Dianne Fields, and Madeline Lavato. 13 y Homecoming Festivities Bring Spirit And Involvement 1. Football boys and volleyball girls won the balloon race, (as the cheerleaders ran out of air). 2. The Freshmen bonfire lit up the night, our spirits and 3, the band playing. 4. The pie eating contest saw new champions crowned. 5. Kiddie day brought out little girls and their dolls. 6. The drum corps during the Homecoming march. 7. The boys cheer squad bumps through a routine at the powder puff game. As the Apple Day festivities got under way the crowd began to grow as out of town guests filled main street in Penrose to watch the town parade. Reigning over the years festivities were three Florence High School students. Queen Kathy Duncan and attendants Tami Hazelton and Peggy DeVor. 16 Of the fifteen girls that tried out for Apple Day Royalty only three made it. Kathy Duncan was chosen the winner as last years’ queen, Donna Doxtater crowned her. Another important event was Pioneer Day, held in Florence. It was enjoyed by many. As the nation got up off its seat and danced, so did Florence High. Snowball, a traditional dance sponsored by the Men’s F-Club provided excitement with the royalty; Rick Kenagy as king and Debbie Meyers as Queen. The band Split” played music mostly of rock and disco, two sets of the most innovative sets of music of the year. 1. Snowball Royalty has the honors of exchanging carnations. 2. Couples enjoy the beat of a collage of music. 3. Split” performed with a fine appeal of music. 17 1. Sweetheart Royalty was called for a take between dances. 2. To make the night a success, the band Rocky Mountain entertained with top hit music. 3. Sweethearts dance to a fast, energetic tune. With the disco fever hitting just about everyone, there was constant craving for the lights, mirrors and dance floors. Sweetheart helped provide these with Kim Barnett as Queen and Cecil Pennebaker as King. Through the night, music was played by Rocky Mountain” and came to a halt at midnight. Also, Jeanette Mata served as Sweetheart princess and John Sanborn as the prince. All in all, the scene Sweetheart gave was quite a memorable one. Blossom Day 1. Blossom Day Royalty take their turn in the parade lineup. 2. Kids of all ages took a part in the weekend. 3. The pride of FHS had their scene in the festivities. 4. The varsity cheerleaders took the lead before the band. I Places Everybody!” Special Interest Days were back this year with activity-oriented events like discodancing and special tours to name a few. As students, mostly seniors, challenged the rapids of the Arkansas River with Mel Smith and Janis Fedde as sponsors, others tried their skills at macrame and strained glass techniques with Donna Nelson. The wide variety of interests made the two days special and quite successful. 20 1. Special interest students display their disco talents. 2. The rapids presented quite a challenge to the FHS seniors. 3. Seniors, Lisa Mares and Karen Roberts found out the hardships in camping out while on the rafting trip. 4. Artists find a landscape for their special interest in art and landscape. 5. Former FHS students aided the disco dancers. The 1978-79 Prom was held a distance farther this year than previous years, yet gave the same memorable feeling to each person there. Held in Pueblo West, Prom had the theme Love Is In the Air”, and had Sterling” back to supply their rock music. The only charge this year was to have had junior and senior class dues paid in full which was a treat for many. 1. Love was in the air for these prom couples. 2. Dates enjoy the closeness of each other during their dance. 3. Royalty for the '78-'79 Prom was Cora Snyder, 2nd attendant; Dave Smith, king; Carla Espinoza, queen; Jackie Laughlin, first attendant. 22 Now, as we head into the final year of the decade, diversity seems to be the catchword and the new waves of dance and disco seem perfectly capable of coexisting, appealing as they do to widely separated audiences. But most of all, the profitable impressions of the music in movies and scenes about music seem certain to become increasingly important in youth’s lives. Dances became satisfying outlets at FHS. 23 1. All couples needed to take a break from the prom excitement. 2. Sterling performed once again for a special occasion. 3. The queen and her date pose closely for a picture. Seniors Perform Last Act Beginning the year of what next ... Above all, 1978 was a year of people. Seniors, in their triumphs and disasters, etched themselves unforgettably into memories. Not only was the traditional Palmer Field ceremonies for graduation day moved into the gym for the first time, but the class of '79 will be remembered also for the renovation of the building and spirit of our school. 1. Ready to begin commencement, are the anxious seniors. 2. Valedictorian, Tim O'Neil gives his farewell to the graduating class. 3. Saying good-bye was a difficult task for graduates Dave Jones and Jackie Laughlin. 4. Graduation brought sorrow as well as happiness as Kelly Yeoman expresses. 5. Dana Jones, class salutatorian, welcomes those In attendance. 6. Principal Victor Becco expresses his thoughts on the year. 25 • • Art Club officers for 1979 were president, Jim Davis; vice-president, Carla Espinoza; secretary, Scott Wehrman; and treasurer, Lori Neary. J Tl Huskies Take 10-7 Season The Huskies had a good season in '79 with a 10-7 record, and just missed qualifying for the district playoffs. A good team showing was backed by excellent individual performances, with John Sanborn receiving special recognition as Gazette-Telegraph Player of the Week. His fine pitching earned him several team records, including most strike-outs and best season E.R.A., and also the Defensive Player of the Year trophy. Other outstanding efforts were given by Mike Hand; most R.B.I.s and Offensive Player of the Year, Tom Vendetti; most assists, and Mark Andreatta; most outs for infield. 1. The contest was held January 27, at Coronado High School in Colorado Springs. The squad has won excellent ratings the past two years. The pom-pon girls for 78-79 were co-heads Debbie Meyers and Jackie Laugh- lin. Lacey Goetz, Janeen Spencer, Shelly Carrithers, Diane Fields and Mary Sulli-vant made up the rest of the squad. The girls performed halftime and pre-game shows. They also marched with the FHS band. Pom-pon girls cheered with cheerleaders at football games, wrestling matches and basketball games. 1. In volleyball and basketball she was often the dominating player on the floor, spiking down points or fighting for rebounds. In track her efforts took her to state, where she qualified for the finals and placed high in the state standing. A fierce competitor, Jane truly earned recognition as Woman Athlete of the Year. 1. As a group they spent long hours with us both in and out of the classroom, both in academic and athletic activities. New to the faculty this year were Ken Hazelip, Bob Packard, and Jim Shea, and also new was the great improvement in Florence High brought with the renovation. Both faculty and students benefited from the changes that brought both greater student pride and faculty pride in their school. 118 1. Social Studies Dept. Front Row; Chuck Smith and Mel Smith.
