High Florence,Colorado 1973 When man has conquered all the depths of space and the mysteries of time, then will he be but still beginning. We, the Florence Yearbook Staff would like to dedicate the 1972-73 Florence Husky to our sponsor, Mrs. Dorothy Parker. We would also like the student body of FHS to remember Del Rodarmel, who passed away November 2, 1972. People 5 Students enjoy Exchange Day between schools in the area. The faces of students working and enjoying themselves; students bringing their talents to full use; experiencing life as it comes their way; learning to cope with the future; coming to the reality that the future lies in their hands. Queen Marsha Koch hugs the ball. Planning the yearbook. 7 Moments, memories, lasting impressions made by the little things you do-- taking time to look back and remember your past -- your friends, the fun you had together. The excitement of fellowship with one another. A time to think, cherish your yesterdays, lock them up in your memory forever. Your life—everything you do is a whole part of you. Activities PIONEER DAY Pioneer Day brings excitement to Florence and surrounding towns. It is a big day for everyone. Miss Rene Johns reigned as Queen this year. Her court was as follows: Miss Vicki Vendetti, First Attendant; Miss Terri Patch, Second Attendant; and Miss Marla Thomas, Miss Personality. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Martin were King and Queen this year. 12 In the month of October Apple Day occurs in Penrose. The people of Penrose plan Apple Day for over four months to make it the best ever. When the big day comes, people from miles around gather to enjoy the fun and excitement. The annual parade occurs first with Penrose and Florence floats and the area bands. After the parade the people then retire to the park where they can enjoy free apple pie and the music of the Prison Band. During the day, there are many kinds of races, games, and gymkana events. The evening is then ended with the annual Apple Day dance. This year Patty Ratkovich reigned as Queen for the Apple Day festivities. Her court was as follows: Winnie Sieve, First Attendant; and Thana Bennett, Second Attendant and also Miss Personality. APPLE DAY Apple Day brings people both young and old to enjoy the excitement and festivities. (ABOVE) The people of Penrose and surrounding towns line the streets awaiting the starting of the parade. (LEFT) A group of youngsters enjoying the apples which the people of Penrose have grown and candied. HOMECOMING 1972-1973 Homecoming is a busy week at FHS. Each class builds a float for the parade on Friday. This year seniors took first; juniors, second; sophomores, third; and freshmen, last. A pep assembly held in the gymnasium Friday afternoon preceded the parade. Friday night the game was played, followed by the dance. Royalty for the festivities are (from L. TO R.) Queen, Marsha Koch; senior, Sue West; junior, Kathy Marlow; sophomore, Eva Lenard; and freshman, Mary Spahn. 14 15 SWEETHEART 1973 The Sweetheart Dance was held February 19 in the old gymnasium with the color scheme of red, white and pink. Decorations consisted of a white wrought iron chair in front of a six-foot red and white stuffed heart. Every couple who attended the dance had a red heart with their names on it. Candidates for Queen this year were Alexia Gamache, Cindy Horn, Rene Johns, Nancy Kosek, Susie Rathke, and Debbie Trevithick. Miss Nancy Kosek reigned as Queen over the festivities. Linda Massaro was the emcee. Miss Kosek was crowned by Miss Sue West and escorted by John Fazzino. There was no annual Sweetheart King this year. 16 ASSEMBLIES One of the very interesting assemblies FHS had this year was Herb Scott and his friend Eddie. Mr. Scott is a ventriloquist, guitarist, vocalist, comedian, and M.C. He and Eddie gave a very funny and interesting show. (TOP RIGHT); In this picture we find a girl from Canon City High School. She came to demonstrate to the high school students how her well-trained dog Tinker could perform. This assembly was affiliated with the Canon City Humane Society. Miss Carmalita Pope was to emcee this assembly but was unable to attend because of illness. In the BOTTOM PICTURE is a group of high school students gathered to enjoy another exciting assembly. 17 In the ABOVE picture Florence High School students gathered to watch an interesting assembly of two gymnasts perform daring fetes on the trampoline. Working on the Husky Yearbook for the past four years has brought me closer to the school. It has helped me to learn how to work with people and most of all helped me accept responsibility. During these four years I attended the workshops that are an annual affair held at different schools in our area. Each year I found it to be a rewarding and enlightening experience. It was planned differently each year and the techniques and ideas on how to improve your school yearbooks were brought out. My freshman year the yearbook was done after school and on the student's own time. In my sophomore year it was assigned to the Journalism II class and has remained that way ever since. During these four years I have been the section editor for the administration my freshman year, section editor of my class my sophomore and junior years. I was the assistant editor the first half of my junior year and editor the last half. I am the editor of the 1972-'73 Husky. I'd like to say I think it takes a good staff but most of all good devoted sponsors who care about the annual and want to make it a good book. I think Mrs. Dorothy Parker, our literary sponsor, and Mr. Vernon Robert, our photography sponsor, should be given a great deal of praise. 42 Nancy Kosek, Editor Sports (TOP TO BOTTOM) (LEFT TO RIGHT) Coach Tom Gribben, Coach Richard Burlson, Coach John Merriam, Coach Salyer, and Larry Watkins Manager. The individual determination and struggle is coupled with the strong team spirit, backing and unity. YEARBOOK STAFF In the fall of 1970-71 Journalism II was added to the curriculum at FHS. This class publishes the yearbook and works in the field of journalism as well. The staff's job is to try to depict what the school year has meant to each individual, though it is impossible to depict what is special to each of us. Its endeavor is to record as much of what is a part of student life as they see it. 142 LEFT: Editors for the 1972-73 Husky are Nancy Kosek (Head) and Frank Morelli (Assistant). We, the Florence Husky Yearbook Staff, would like to thank the following: The Cottage Studio Delmar Studio The Florence Citizen Gibson's Discount Center Snyder's Portraits All Advertising Merchants Mr. Jack McFall and The Canon City Daily Record in helping to complete the 1972-73 Florence Husky. Through the processing of film, donation of pictures, donation of a clock radio for a raffle, advertising, and a donation of $25 from Portland Ideal Cement Company the Florence Husky was completed.
