Awake! For today is a new beginning. FLORENCE HIGH SCHOOL Florence, Colorado In the Age of Pisces, The scholars who have graduated from FHS were led by these four girls who graduated in 1892. They were Anna McConnell, valedictorian; Carrie Lobach, salutatorian; Estrella Tanner and Grace Lobach, class members. These girls were graduated on Friday, June 10, 1892, from the high school building. In 1892, the high school and grades occupied Central School, which is presently serving as City Hall. Grace Lobach and Now LIFE IS A STAGE and everyone is an actor Life is a complex maze of acts and scenes. Everyone has a part and directs and produces his own version of life. As in all activities, life must be played to its fullest, so don't cop out on your big scene, because you only go around once. 10 Always there is the individual and the crowd.... the individual. .. .and the crowd. • • • • • • • • •« • • • • • • • • • ••••••• • • • I ••••••• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •••••• •••• « ,• • • • • 1 ® .......•• • • • • • | V. • • • • • • a a tSSS? w.v.v mam • • • • • • • ■ _w • V .v.v • • • I mm m • • • • V.V. Gary Sasser finds that the $10 waiting at the top of the greased pole isn't as easy to get at as he thought. ACTIVITIES HOMECOMING Homecoming always brings a special air of excitement that starts with die pep assembly after lunch and goes through the parade, reaching its climax at the crowning of the queen during halftime of the game. This year's pep assembly was a portrayal of Snow Huskie and the Seven Dwarves, with the pictures here showing the fun and spirit involved. Fun and Play PENROSE APPLE DAY Penrose Apple Day held the first Saturday in October for the last 32 years was a big success again this year. Reigning as queen was Karen Carrithers (top) with her two attendants, Linda West and iinda Bustos (bottom right photo). To be eligible for this honor, the girls competing must live in Penrose and be picked by the judges on personality and charm. PIONEER DAY It's just tradition for the seniors to show the freshmen who is boss and the best time to do this is Florence's annual Pioneer Day. Seniors do little playful things like smearing lipstick or making them kneel down and pledge their faithfulness to the Senior Class., Or sometimes they just get together to enjoy each other's company, (bottom photo) Pioneer Day is a city holiday that is now in its thirty-fifth year. Festivities usually start in the morning with a parade and the crowd drifts to the city park afterwards for a community get-together. SWEETHEART AND SNOWBALL HIP HIPPIE HOORAY Mrs. Stankey (Debbie Proud) argues ferociously but amusingly with Officer Kelly (Wes Campbell) while she convinces him of the hippies' corruptness. This year's school play Hip Hippie Hooray, directed by drama teacher, Mrs. Marion Reynolds. The plot involves a young lady, Susie, who sets out in search of her young runaway brother who has fled to Haight-Ashbury to turn hippie. When a few hippies disapprove of her middle class enterprising attitude, Alex, a full fledged hippie, summons Commander Brotherhood, head hippie. When he appears on the scene Susie discovers that he is her long-lost brother. The hippies have a lay-in to discourage Officer O'Hara (Mike Kendall) from closing Susie's free Eat-in. SLAVE DAY Slave day is an annual project sponsored by Quill and Scroll to raise money for new library books by selling senior members. The money also pays for a critique on the school newspaper and annual. 23 National Assemblies give students a chance to see other people and how they live and work. It's one of the most casual ways for students to learn. ASSEMBLIES AROUSE INTEREST The Salida Choir came to FHS to give us a special Christmas concert on their way home from tour. 24 The Candido Trio from France entertained FHS students by explaining the musical instruments they played. They also sang homeland songs. There's nothing quite like assemblies to boost morale By the time a pep assembly is over, students are convinced that their team is the best, and that as long as they are behind their team defeat is impossible. Cheerleaders and pep club did a large part to promote school spirit. The Spirit Jug (Bottom left) was one device made of paper mache used to promote class competition while skits worked other times to get laughs. As always the tradition, the freshman were selected to serve this year's prom. Costumed as the Wonderland cardmen, they served punch and cake, distributed favors, and added to the Wonderland atmosphere. ALICE IN WONDERLAND The 1971 Junior-Senior Prom was held on the evening of May 8. The theme this year was Alice In Wonderland, The gym became alive with scenes, flowers, and other decorations portraying Alice's adventures. The evening reached its climax when the 1971 Prom Queen Sharon Beradi and attendants Linda Scholz and Rosalie Garcia were announced. The annual event was enjoyed by everyone attending and many felt it had been one of F.H. S. 's most memorable proms. GRADUATION May 23, was the final day for the Class of '71. It was full of happiness because of the end of a twelve-year struggle and the beginning of a new way of life. The commencement exercise was a memorable occasion for a memorable four years. 30 CELEBRITIES HOMECOMING ’70 From the traditional afternoon pep rally held on the front lawn to the annual Homecoming Dance held in the old gym, Homecoming 1970 was a tremendous success. The cheerleaders put on a skit entitled Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. After the skit and spirit yells, School Superintendent Barto Babitz introduced the Homecoming Queen Marcie Horn and her court, Janis Peters, Janine Lutrey, DeAnna Evans, and Bonnie Petty. The Annual Homecoming parade which included the four class floats, school bands, and the queen and her attendants, traveled from the front of F.H.S. down Main Street. The busy day was climaxed by the crowning of Marcie during half-time of the Florence vs. Manitou Springs football game. After an overhwelming victory, Queen Marcie and her court reigned over the Homecoming Dance held that evening. Homecoming '70 turned out to be a very memorable day for everyone involved. BLOSSOM DAY Miss Chiquita Marlow was chosen to reign as second attendant at the Canon City Blossom Day held May 1 and 2, 1971. Chosen from a field of fifteen girls from Florence and Canon City, Chiquita was selected on the basis of poise, personality, and school participation. 34 APPLE DAY Miss Linda Bustos of Penrose was chosen as first attendant for the annual Apple Day held in Penrose on October 3, 1970. One thing I really like about being in high school is that you have more freedom, and you don't have someone always looking over your shoulder telling you that you're wrong. 110 ADMINISTRATION Mr. Barto Babitz Superintendent Some of our administrative staff had this to say about the year 1970-1971. The overall opinion was that it was an excellent year and that the attitude of students was improved one hundred per cent. We were able to change our dress code, which proved to be a success. We were able to introduce new classes and eliminate 1st and 6th hour study halls. Many changes occured that wouldn't have been possible without the cooperation of both student and teacher. This was definitely a good year.
