THIS IS FLORENCE HIGH FLORENCE HIGH FLORENCE COLORADO TABLE OF CONTENTS Foreword 5 Impressions 6 Very Important People 28 Athletics 44 Organizations 66 Student Body 78 Faculty 98 Administration 100 4 ■ Physical . . .intellectual. . .humorous . . . artistic . ..challenging . . .rewarding. . .so goes the pattern of events at Florence High School. From the resonance of the first and final bells to the excitement of a decisive ball game, student expression is unlimited in the diverse patterns of daily activity. A mad chaotic whirl of extra-curricular activities and social commitments, force a decision between work and play, dating and homework. While studying is the main preoccupation at Florence High, equally sought are the moments of diversion, the moments of relaxation, and moments of warm friendship. The usual yearbook crises arose in the course of the year and were surmounted by the untiring and dedicated work of the yearbook staff. An increasing awareness of general semantics led the editors to explore new dimensions in communication and from these stem the general lay-out of the book. The yearbook does not tell everything there is to tell about Florence High School. It is neither a definitive introduction nor a historical study. Rather, it is a visual record of the school as it exists in the minds of those who worked on the staff. In the 1964 HUSKY, school life is portrayed candidly, picturing the student and his activities honestly and without reservation. Approaching the book impressionistically, the staff members have tried to create an atmosphere that at any given moment is typical. Occasionally they were inspired with rewarding insights and more than once they came to feel they were portraying a rich plastic in which they were inevitably led from texture to pattern, from pattern to space, and from space to time. Rosemary Verlengia Editor Talents to match a new complexity. 8 9 ROUSING MARCHES and flashing baron. Precision, ceremony, and leadership. Drum major Raymond Rodriguez delights countless spectators at halftime and parades. Under his skilled direction the marching band has reached new heights in color and discipline. Only the individual suffers injury if he ignores the many opportunities to engage in social and physical relaxation. Friendship and activities are always worthwhile. STUDENT EXPRESSION finds an outlet in many wholesome activities. The tenseness after a game finds release in the homecoming bonfire. Homework is temporarily postponed to take care of the pleasures at hand. 11 A COLORFUL group gathers on the lawn in front of the high school in anticipation of Pioneer Day ceremonies. A PLEASANT stroll along Maple Avenue can be relaxing after a hard day of Latin, Shakespeare, logarithms, and research. FOOTBALL UNIFORMS give a unique slant to one of the many, noisy, pep assemblies held during the school year. ANTIQUE AUTOMOBILES and apple pie are part of Apple Day at Penrose. A model T provides official transportation. 13 TERM PAPERS are one of the hard realities of life. 14 No formal balance exists between work and play. There is studying, the main occupation of the student, and there is diversion. The ever desired break from the books, the typewriters, the classes. AN IMPROMPTU choral group gives expression to one of man’s creative instincts. EXUBERANCE IS stamped on Mark Angel, GwenMcCleary, and Jim Mayfield as they are borne aloft over the lights, the dust, and the shooting galleries of the carnival. EMPTY BLEACHERS awaiting Saturday’s game will be filled with noisy partisan crowds. Football practice attracts several spectators as late afternoon shadows fall across the field. 18 FOCUSING THEIR attention on a faulty 1952 Ford transmission are Eddie Ossola, Lawrence Lair, Ray Garcia, Joe Swisher, Don Karr, and Frank Martz. Auto mechanics instructor Bill Meigs is also Athletic Director of Florence High School. AT LEFT, Frank Martz is engrossed in the process of a re welding a piece of angle iron to tubing. POP ART dictated the inclusion of a stop sign in this picture. Members of the Quill and Scroll literary organization are: Mrs. Parker, sponsor, Carolyn Goodall, Cheryl Janes, Rosemary Verlengia, Kathy Smith, and Linda Hudnall. ABOVE, INDIVIDUAL expressions sensitively stated are the outcomes of classes in art. Participating in an outdoor sketching assignment are Kathy Berndt, Merle Whitenbeck. Ken Compton, Henry Ramos, Ken Stevens, Salvadore Trujillo, and Tom Salano. RELATIVITY AND quantum physics a re deep concerns IN A typical after-school scene, Miss Boyd helps John Scutti in an investigation of bone marrow. Somehow, the day just isn’t long enough. PROBABILITIES AND sense extension make thought increasingly sophisticated. Miss Hitchcock helps Dorah Mattice in the important area of research. 23 HEAVY PRESSURES of academic work fill the typical school day from eight till four with a continued round of study and recitation. WEEKENDS MORE often than not are planned to include the enjoyment and thrill of Saturday’s game. Husky fans, at right, enter the west gate. THUMBING THEIR way to the Sadie Hawkins Dance are JoeTamburello, Don White, Dean Mac Kinnon, and Dave Robinson. Dogpatch has Utopian implications. He received a five year tuition waiver scholarship from the Colorado School of Mines. TWO IMPORTANT people in Florence High School are seniors J.R. Philips and Kathy Simpson. They were elected Head Boy and Girl by the student body and faculty. Their job of coordinating the maze and intricate pattern of student activities requires the highest type of leadership. 33 YEARBOOK EDITOR Rosemary Verlcngia won a scholarship award from Colorado State College, was chosen Valedictorian, and took third place in the editorial contest at Adams State College. CHORAL ARRANGEMENTS are second nature to Frank Tilley, Anne Heid, Anita Tilley, and Rodney Irvine. These talented students had the honor of being chosen for membership in the highly competitive State Chorus. THE CLOUD chamber at right won first prize in the Science Fair this year. This scientific achievement was the work of two unassuming young men, Jim Roberts and Tom Bellino, both of whom are outstanding science students. THE WORK of John Wells was exhibited in March at the May-D and F Company in Denver. A Regional Gold Key award winner, Wells is shown below. pmur.us NOW IN Cl QUO CIWMBf K IMPORT NANCY SINGLETERRY IS 1964 PROM QUEEN Nancy Singleterry was crowned Queen at the Junior Senior Prom which proved to be one of the best in years. The impact at scrimmage is faithfully recorded by the camera. THE RIGOROUS life of an athlete is harsh and demanding but the spartan virtues have an aesthetic appeal. The effects of tough mental and physical conditioning are reflected in the photogenic face of halfback Bobby Trujillo. THE SCREECH OF TIPOFF WHISTLES ♦ ♦ ♦ High school basketball probably offers more excitement than any other athlete spectacle. Crowds pour in during the season and from the first tipoff whistle till the final buzzer the gym is filled with driving suspense and noisy bedlam. Contributing greatly to the unrelenting pressure is the type of ball played by the Huskey A squad. Traditionally lacking in height, the team members are invariably forced to rely on aggressive ball handling, split-second timing and accurate shooting. The result is a particularly gratifying blend of speed, precision, and teamwork. The classic moment comes in basketball when such a team threatens to defeat or defeats opponents who aver age six inches more in height. To the end of the season, this was the pattern for the Huskies whose hard won laurels of third place in the league are well deserved. AT LEFT, Herb Woolsey demonstrates typical drive and aggressiveness which give Husky teams their fine ball control. rHE SWISH OF LEATHER THROUGH CORD ... 53 Templeton scores from the key hole. . . The Husky ball players won their first five games but lost the last three due to errors. One of the highlights of the season was an 8-2 victory over Harrison.
