Innovations Bring Changes
Jim Baird - Political Science
1977-78 wasn't just another dull school year at FHS: students received benefits from a variety of innovations ranging from new teaching methods to totally new programs.
Heading the list of innovations was the TIPS program, a federally funded project to Improve the probability of success, designed for all vocational students needing help with school work.
A work-simulation program, developed by general studies students with a Division of Vocational Rehabilitation grant of $1,000 enabled these students to practice skills needed in jobs such as nursing, secretarial, auto mechanics, etc.

For the first time in a number of years, the English Department teaching assignments were so that three teachers had one level each while two teachers picked up the left-overs.
The Building Trades ranch-style house, once again, was the combined project of building trades, drafting, woodworking, electricity, and home economics students.
Physical Education classes danced everything from the square dances to disco dances.

Another new development was the establishment of a Career Guidance Center at Washington School to serve a twelve-county area.
Washington School also housed a placement service to aid students, graduates, and adults In securing part-time or full-time employment In this area.

Several classes moved to Washington School this year Including art, math, health, and occupations. Drafting and electricity moved there last year. Art students are especially pleased with the extra space.
Special activities of clubs this year included the band's long-awaited trip to Disney World during the summer, funded by thousands of dollars made with numerous projects over a two-year period. While there, the members marched In parades.
