s'1984 N, VOLUME 47 FLOMATON HIGH SCHOOL P.O. BOX T FLOMATON, AL 36441 F L 0 W I N G As you, the students of F.H.S., returned for another year, time had placed many changes on you. Some of those changes were apparent, but others were kept locked away in your heart waiting for time to reveal them. Remember to plan your future, but live one day at a time. What is time? — The shadow on the dial, the striking of the clock, the running of the sand, day and night, summer and winter, months, years, cen- turies — these are but the arbitrary and outward signs — the measure of time, not time itself. Thanks Mrs. Young this 1984 yearbook to Mrs. Christine Young for her years of dedicated service to young people. Our wish to you upon your retirement is that you may see these years as Shakespeare described them: “Our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything.” The Perfect Witch, ’73; The Grass Harp, ’74; Don’t Blow the Whistle, ’ 77; Breaker Calling Cinderella, ’81; and The Unin- vited, ’82. Mrs. Young, who always stresses manners and behavior as well as subject matter, in- structed her students to rise when an adult entered her classroom. She also showed her school spirit and supported the athletic program. The yearbook staff dedicates During her fourteen years at FHS (1969-1983), Mrs. Christine Young taught courses in social studies, family living, math, art, and English. She also served as senior sponsor for six years. One of her special interests was drama and during her years at Flomaton, she directed many outstanding senior plays. Among these were Cheaper by the Dozen, ’72; Appreciation f £ ‘U - V 17 1 y Time Alters Fads and Favorites Time brings many changes. A recent poll of F.H.S. students, taken in Nov. 1983, showed changes in fashions, music, TV shows, and places to go on dates. New styles in clothing included different types of jeans. Some of these were Lee’s, Levi’s, Chic’s, and Calvin Klein’s. The OP (Ocean Pacific) t-shirt was the popular choice to wear with jeans, followed by Panama Jack, second, and Alabama Roll- Tide, third. The roll-down boots, the boat-shoes, and Nike tennis shoes were among some of the favorite shoe wear. Music has taken on many changes, also. For example, the number one band was ALABAMA. Other singers included Hank Williams, Jr. and Michael Jackson. Among the top songs was Michael Jackson’s “PYT” in the number one position. Others were “Islands in the Stream” by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton and “Fooling” by Def Leppard. The A-Team was the number one TV show, followed by Dynasty as the number two choice while Webster received the third highest vote for favorite TV shows. The movies still seem to be the favorite place to go on a date. “Parking” and Pensacola were also popular places for couples. h jq i y Fads and Favorites Saturday In The Park The interviews and the tea for the Miss FHS pageant were held Thursday afternoon, Dec. 1. Each spring an annual sports banquet is held, and students who have lettered in one or more sports — football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball, cheerleading — immediately become a member of the F Club. This club has existed at F.H.S. for approximately 27 years. The sponsor is the head football coach. This year’s sponsor is Guy Sawyer. Joy Club “Jesus first, Others second, and Yourself last” is the basic principle to which Joy Club members prescribe. Every morning short devotions are given by members of the club. Although we will never have as much time to do all the things we would like to do, the important thing is to be selective in how we spend our time. It is the quality of the things we do, and not the quan- tity that counts. Students at F.H.S. will never have a year exactly like this to pass again. Studying, laughing at break, and eating at lunch brings us closer together. We spend at least eight hours a day together and make lasting impres- sions on each other. In tne future some of us will be leaving, but others will take our place. The memories we have made for ourselves are to be kept forever. ... No sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place. The 1983-84 Hurricane Staff would like to express our deep ap- preciation to all of the people who have made our yearbook possible. Mr. Knotts, Mrs. Wagner, Mrs. Foster, Mr. Fisher, and Eddie Grissett, along with many more, have all been of great help to us in preparing our yearbook. They helped us record the memories of the 1983-84 school year and to make the year more enjoyable for all of us. We would especially like to thank our sponsor, Mrs. Folsom, for putt- ing up with us and for helping us in every way she could. Thanks to all of you for helping us to preserve our flow through time! 1983-84 Hurricane Staff Mrs. Folsom — Sponsor Beth Watson — Editor Brenda White — Co-Editor Pam Davis — Bus. Mgr.
