REA Award Denise Bell and Fred Salter were the recipients of this year's REA Outstanding Student Award for Flomaton High School. This entitled them to compete in the REA Washington Youth Tour Competition. This competition was held at Jefferson Davis junior College and consisted of an interview during which the students were asked questions about electric cooperatives and were given a cnance to express their ideas on current issues Denise Bell is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Shorty Ray Bell of Flomaton. Fred is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Salter of Brewton. Learning about city and state government is just one of the many things Karla Morris experienced at Girls' State in Montgomery, Alabama. Karla is a senior at Flomaton High School and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Jack Morris of Flomaton. Richard Byrd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Byrd of Brewton, was selected to represent Flomaton High School at Boys' State. Boys' State was held at Universi- ty of Alabama. There he attended sessions pertaining to state government, its functions and procedures and discussed ways to amend the Alabama Constitution. Youth Citizenship Seminar Ken Hollington, Lewis Curry, and Fred Salter were selected by the Brewton Civitan Club to represent Flomaton High School at the 26th Annual Youth Citizenship Seminar. The Seminar was held on the campus of Harding Universi- ty located in Searcy, Arkansas. Ken, Lewis, and Fred departed on )une 7 and enjoyed a week of seminars dealing with free enterprise, democracy, and the American economy. 16 Awards

Representing the 1982 Senior Class as Valedictorian with a 7.2927 average is Fred Salter, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred S. Salter. Prior to atten- ding Flomaton High School he attended McCall )r. High where upon graduation in 1979, he was Valedictorian of the class. Fred is a member of the Beta Club, Joy Club, and Annual Newspaper Staff. He has been a member of the Flomaton High School Band for the past six years. His hob- bies include racquetball, music, horseback riding, swimming, and reading. After graduation his plans include attending the United States Military Academy at West Point and majoring in mechanical engineering. 18 Valedictorian
