The show consist- ed of students mostly from the Academy par- ticipating in sketches. Since 1984 was the year of breakdancing; that was the main event. The Wac Dancers marveled the judges with their moves to win first place along with $50. The Dy- namic Breakers, Carlos Johnson and Kian John- son, won second place and twenty-five dollars by putting on a show with speculator dancing. The 11th grade American Literature and U.S History students vis- ited Boston, Massachusetts on May 15-20 while the 9th grade Civics students travelled to our nation’s capital, Wash- ington D C., on March 29-April 2. On their way to Boston, the 11th graders went through Canada and stopped by Niag- ara Falls. They visited such sights as the House of Seven Gables, John Hancock Obser- vatory. The softball, track, base- ball, and tennis team met with their fam- ilies and coaches at Flushing Park to give away awards and trophies. The following are a few of the awards given out for outstanding performance. Outstanding Sportsman 1984 for tennis was Steve White. Scholastic Athlete went to Todd Smith and Lynn Zoll. The team had a potent offensive attack but seemed weak on the pitching staff. Captain Andre Adams led the offensive attack in almost every category and was the Most Valuable Player on the team. The team had an unusual amount of bad luck dur- ing the year when several times they lost games in the last inning. Poor defense accounted for these losses. The bright side of the season was the occasional offensive punch by the team. They scored sixteen runs against Hamady and twenty-two runs against Flint Nothern for two wins. The win against Flint Northern was the first Academy baseball win against a class A school ever. He turned an erratic team destined to a losing season into one of the better teams in Class “C . An example of the turn around is against Bentley. Early in the season they lost a tough game to Bentley because they committed too many errors and base running mistakes. Later in the season the softball team destroyed Bentley by the score of seventeen tc nine. Missy Beebe back from an extended absence became the pitching star on the team. She pitched a no-hitter against Saginaw St. Mary in a twenty-seven to nothing win. This game was easily the climax of the season in that they did whatever they wanted in the victory. Powerhouse sluggers Tabatha Koger Sylvene Riddick, and Thelma Koger had a field da against St. Mary’s pitching staff. The team really matured during the season into a determined. we,; balanced ball club. ’6 Varsity Softball Mediocre Turns To Superior Season For Softball Team The 1984 Softball Team. Strong sin- gles were the key to this year’s victo- ries; with first and second singles David Bell and Matt DeFrain, as the co-cap- tains for the team. The younger, less experienced doubles teams showed great potential. Highlights of the sea- son came during the State Regionals, where Bell, DeFrain, and Todd Smith took first place each in singles match- es, while Steve White took a strong second. Coach Bateman spoke highly of the team. “I feel that this was a strong year and I hope the trend con- tinues.” The 1984 Tennis Team FRONT ROW: Kevin Nichols. Chris Warmbold. Todd Smith. The football team had a disappointing year ending the sea- son with a record of one win and seven losses. The offense had problems scoring, and the defense had trouble stopping the opposition. The whole team had little ethusiasm. When the team would get behind early, they tended to give up. Their best game of the season was against M.S.D. They won by the score of 28 to 7. The team played well in spots but they were erratic most of the season. They were always one block or one play from scoring but many plays away from being a good team. All of this contributed to the losing season but the most important factor was the inexperience. Many first year players were pushed into starting assign- ments. 24 Football To A Losing Season The 1984 Football Team FRONT ROW: Lonnie Duncan. Todd Mitchell. Xavier Peterson. Mike O'Dell. The record is deceiving because the soccer team was in many close games. The team's inexperience led them to make mistakes at critical times in the game. They did end the season positively and confidently by beating Lake Fenton and Goodrich by the identi- cal score of 2-1. With more determnation in practice and more experience, the soccer team can only im- prove. Coach Lloyd Nicholson Teams are helpless from stopping Rhonda Thompson drive to the hoop Varsity Girls Basketball 29 The 1984 varsity girls’ basketball team went from a losing regular season record of eight wins and nine losses to one win away from being in the state tournament finals. The tur- naround could be attributed to playing a tough schedule of teams. Playing these teams toughened them up for the playoffs. They played a tenacious defense that forced opponents into a number of turnovers. The strong rebounding of Ann Elzie, Sandy Westbrook, and Christain Houston helped shut down on the number of shots from op- ponents. Captains Sandy Westbrook, Rhonda Thompson, and Marta Greer dis- played leadership. Coach Nicholson felt the team played up and over its expectations for the year. The team had one flaw, poor shooting. Their field-goal percentage was bad, but they made this up with tough de- fense. Congratulations to Sandy Westbrook; chosen as the Prep Player of the Week (Nov. 30-Dec. 3) by the Flint Journal. Congratula- tions also to Sandy Westbrook and Ann El- zie; Sandy was picked to the fifth team All State list while Ann was picked to the honor- able mention All State list by the Detroit Free Press. The 1984 j.v. girls' basketball team ac- complished everything that it wanted to according to Coach Clif Turner. “We had many young people on the team and basically the goal is to get them playing time so they will be ready for varsity, said Turner. Not only did the players get time to play, but they played well, -ending the season with a record of ten wins and nine losses. The climax of the season was winning six consecutive games. The problem the team had was scoring points. Coach Turner attributes this to the school not having a 7th and 8th grade girls bas- ketball program. “The girls go through a few years of not playing and this hurts their play, said Turner. The girls played hard and with more practice could help out the varsity in a few years. Carmen Hudson was one of the outstanding players on the team. The season gave the girls time to refurbish their basketball skills and in doing so they had a winning record. '984 J.V Girls Basketball Team FRONT ROW Alvita Rouser. Ashley Humphries. They lost some momentum during a stretch of three con- secutive Saginaw teams but came alive during a game against highly ranked Saginaw Valley Lutheran on the road. They won the game 87-80. The big win carried them right into the high school playoffs. Sometimes depending on one person can hurt a team, but it didn’t af- fect the eagles in the playoffs. Coach Nicholson's team was inexperienced which attributed to erratic play at times. The more games they played, the better they seemed to gel together as a unit. They cut their tur- nover rate problem down and even beat a very good Saginaw Valley Lutheran team on the road. They seemed to enjoy play- ing overtime games as they played three of them. The longest of them was a four overtime win over Goodrich. There were some great wins during the season but winning against arch rival Hamady was ever so sweet. The varsity and j.v. each beat Hamady twice during the regular season. Take that Hamady Hawks! Whenever Milton McGee has his hands on the ball, the opposition shutters. A tra- dition was continued when the faculty provided a potluck buffet for the seniors in December. The ninth graders were lucky to get their oranges for their Washing- ton D.C. fundraiser before severe weather destroyed most of the Florida orange crop. The Acade- my's first effort in the High School Quiz Bowl resulting in a 240-60 victory over Hamady made everyone feel proud.
