had proven a brg drawrng card as presrdent of the class durrng hrs freshman year so rn an electron battle that put many a pro fessronal polrtrcal battle to shame Bob be came once agarn the brggest star rn our frrmament 1-le took over as vrce presrdent of the Student Councrl and raprdly garned stature as a football player Queen of the class for the Youth Festrval of 1944 was Arloene Thoreson Holi ' FOOTBALL GAMES Flathead 18 Flathead O Flathead 25 Columb1a Falls Mrssoula Bozeman Flathead O Glasgow Flathead l8 Havre Flathead U Flathead 6 Butte Central Whxtefxsh Flathead 6 Helena Flathead 7 lvhssoula The Braves executed many new plays 1n the1r games th1s season They played good ball throughout the year even aga1nst the State Champ1ons from lVl1ssoula The Braves were up aga1nst st1ff compet1t1on both t1rnes they tangled w1th the Spartans but showed more dr1v1ng power 1n the1r last game by scor1ng Passmg played a ma1or role 1n the games all season Probably the most famous are the K1ng to O Nerl passes These were more prom1nent dur1ng the f1rst home games than th last ones Another pass wh1ch ac counted for many yards was the bullet , ass of a transfer Ne1l Le-1tch Leltch played forceful ball all season Flathead 18 Columbla Falls 0 The Braves started the football season rollrng by defeat1ng Columb1a Falls l8 to U Th1s .vas the f1rst t1me the students had a chance to see the boys ID actron Arnold Kmg and ONe1l d1d much to br1ng about the vrctory w1th splend1d support from the l1ne and backheld Darl1ng and l'f1gson showed up outstandlngly for the Wlldcats w1th bursts of speed wh1ch threatened scores 1n the second per1od Flathead 0 Mxssoula 33 Th Braves traveled to tangle w1th the m1ghty M1ssoula Spartans who gave us one of the toughest beatmgs of the season by defeat1ng us 33 O The boys started out well but all state Roy Malcolm recovered a blocked punt for the Spartans wh1ch set them up 1n scor1ng pos1t1on ln the second quarter Arnold bulldozed for two ftrst downs Then Kmg passed a long one to ONe1l wh1ch was completed but only to be olled bactc on a 5 yard penalty aga1nst the Braves Another attempted pass was mtercepted by Walsh for M1ssoula ln the las quarter Flathead passed and charged to get to lvf1ssoulas 32 yard l1ne but the ball was lost on downs On the th1rd down for M1ssoula Kmgsford was 1n the open and touchdown bound but was stopped by a beautrful tackle by Turner Thus the game ended g1v1ng Mrssoula the1r hard earned w1nn1ng score Flathead 25 Bozeman 0 The defeat the Spartans handed us was slmply a rem1nder to get 1n and work all the harder wh1ch we d1d 1n the f1rst con ference game by defeat1ng the Bozeman Hawks 25 O The f1rst touchdown was made when Arnold took a pass for SIX po1nts The next one was made by Cabbage Iohnson on a lateral pass by Arnold Splend1d bloclang by MacDonald Bertelsen and Handford and cons1derable dr1v1ng power by Brtney was respons1ble for the th1rd touchdown To chmax the one s1ded game Iohnson rntercepted a pass IH the last m1nute of the game and ran 55 yards for the last touchdown of the game After th1s conference w1n the hopes of both the team and the students for a Class A charnp1on Shlp rose Flathead 0 Glasgow 3 The next Class A team to tangle w1th the Braves was the Glasgow eleven We played a hard game but lost 3 U The Scots opened up 1n he second quarter by streakmg around end to the Braves 25 yard l1ne and there after be1ng held for three downs scored th w1nn1ng f1eld goal Flathead then drove to the ll yard l1ne but were stopped by a penalty In the beg1nn1ng of the second half the Braves smashed and passed the1r way down the f1eld to the l1V9 where B1tney drove through for a l1fSl down on the one Then Kmg fumbled and the whole Glasgow l1ne swarmed through to recover Flathead 18 Havre 13 The follow1ng week our hopes were once aga1n ra1sed when we played a charg1ng Havre Blue Pony team and defeated them 1813 The Blue Pomes were deep IH Flat head terr1tory many t1mes but could com plete touchdowns only lW1C9 We were up agamst a very good team whlch clrcked Fa 1 , O 1 4 ' I u 33 1 A , P , up 3 up ,uuuuu 3 ' 3 up 13 ' A , , ' T - 19 A ' .
