SCHOOL HISTORY lf we could go thirty years into the past, our own Flagstaff would be an un- known town to us. Beaver Street was the only paved street except for those in the business district. Emerson High School, located where the Emerson School is today, included the first to the tenth grades, after graduating there, students attended the high school which was a part of the college. Although the weather was the same then as it is today, there was no gymnasium, and all basketball wa s played on outdoor, dirt courts. Then on the first Tuesday in September, l923, Flagstaff High School was scheduled to open for the school term. The huge building must have been planned by dreamers. Flagstaff would never grow large enough to fill such a high school. What a waste of the people's money. These were the opinions of the townspeople about the new school. They couldn't visualize' the Flag- staff of today. The first opening date was postponed because the building wasn't ready. On the scheduled registration dav it poured rain, and because of mud, it was impossible to reach the school. There were no streets or sidewalks to the school. The actual opening date came on Thursday of the third week in Sep- tember, and the total registration including the eighth grade was less than this year's senior class. The study hall was used for the first assembly, because it was large enough to hold the entire student body. The gymnasium seemed like heaven after having only outdoor courts to play on. FHS athletics weren't successful, as the boys didn't win a game for three years. The most exciting football game in the early days was that thriller in which Flagstaff High School beat the college... The next morning school was dismissed for celebration.
