The alumni of the Class of '53 held their class reunion in September of 1960. Each alum-
nus had become a succes in his chosen field.
In the firmly-established television industry, the following alumni were very prominent.
Leonard Kurmas was now president of the Gag Writers of America and writing for the television
show of those rlsing comedians, Walter Pietryzk and Thomas Hibberd. Albert Marshall was
now known as "Uncle Al" and had'his own comedy show whihh' was No. 1 in the nation. Barbara
Schaefer was now married to a famous band leader and was starring in the "I Love Barl cF
Evelyn Supe was giving advice to unhapplly married couples on the "I've Got A Problem" panel
The business world featured many new personalities. Leota Pawloskl was president of
the "Jim-Dandy Can Opener Company" and hired only handsome mie secretaries. Mary Ann
Simons finally becamenvice-president of Holly Carburetor after many years of service. Tha?
Detroit Advertising Agency boasted Jim Hayden as its chief executive. Jim specializes only in
large clients - - 250 pounds and ove'rT'The retail business had two Fitzgerald-ites who man-
aged their own stores. Fred Sullivan owned a hardware store, "O'Sulllvan's Irish Hardware".
The haberdashery business boasted of Chuck Ganoff, who held the grand opening of his new
store on Mom-oe Avenue recently. It is called "Chuck's Cool Cool Clothes". One of Chuck's
best customers is Richard Hartley, who won the award for "The Cattiest Dresser of 1960". A
new chain of supermarhets have just been opened by Donald Wlchec, a grocery tycoon. Mary
Ann LaFluer is supervisor of all the Sanders stores. Ralph Cowie now owns his own Stuioco
Ethfion, which is located next to Chester Oss' used car lot. Chester specializes in hot rods.
Ruth Hacker, that fabulous popcorn tycoonfhas a nationwide monopoly of the popcorn manufac-
turing lndustry. Things have really been popping since Ruth took over.
Helen McBroom has just been voted "Sweatheart of the Office Boys" or "The Girl I'dMost
Like To Do a Trial Balance Wlth". Barbara Sampson of the Birdwell Kitchens has perfected a
new formula for babies, "Barbara Birdwell's Better Baby Biscuits for Bouncing, Bubbly Baby
Boys". Avis Huey is an employee of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. She tests ciga-
rettes for television. Bill Innes couldn't find a job he really liked, so he decided to open his
employment agency. L
The domestic scene includes Beatrice Carpenter who married a successful farmer and
the happy couple now have five farmer's daughters. Marjorie Wheatley and Joy Pilkington,
both housewives, live next door to each other. After turning down many ardent sultors, Delores
Baker has finally married a Texas oilwell millionaire. Pat Fickel is happily married to Fan
Finchem, the top engineer at General Electric. i
Keeping close to the home front in Raymond Cunningham, who is a foreign language
teacher at Fitzgerald. But many of om' alumni are far from home. Roy Shelpman is in the
depths of Africa. He is a missionary there. Charlene Higbee is theierlcan delegate to the
United Nations, she is using the Russian tactic of vetolng every proposal. John Krystopowicz
is giving the French girls a grand time while being stationed in Paris as a Naval attachd. K
prominent Hollywood clothes designer is Marian Shirey, who designs the movie stars' clothes.
An item which hit the headlines not long ago was the story of the person who stumped the me-
chanical brain at Princeton University. This amazing person took the place of this mechanical
brain and helps the professors With their problems. Her name has finally been revealed: Miss
Suff Carter. -
-B Janet Keller teaches the rhumba and hula at Arthur Murray's on Washington Boulevard.
Next d'cETls the Robinson Charm School for models, owned by Janice Robinson. Two of
Janice's models are Sharlene Mitchell, who models for nail polish ads, and Connie Martlock,
who was voted "Miss Peaches and Cream of 1960".
Jack Shimko and Mary Jane Janicki are the presidents of two national organizations.
Mary Jane heads the "Society for the Protection of Natural Blondes" and Jack is president of
the "Bachelor's Protection Society of America". Beverly Byrom, star reporter on the Detroit
Times, reviewed Paul Sleep's two new books, "SLEEP IN KKSST' and "THE ART OF STUDY-
WCT Christy StrangTsThhh-af maintenance engineer at the Industrial National Bank. Christy
enjoys cleaning out the safety deposit boxes at the bank. Marianne Mihelich, photographer for
LIFE maga.zine, covered the channel swim of Helene Zach, who set a new world's record. Joan
Kochanski is now head nurse at Chlldren's Hospital. Paul Jones is the ghost writer for the new
President of the United States.
In the sports World, Jayne Smith won the disc-throwing contest in the 1960 Olympics held
in Detroit at Bercel Stadium, owned hy Bob Bercel. Harry Wilkie was the sports announcer at
the Olympics this professional name is 'F'ERatrlckJ. Elsie Sherwood is a star basketball
player and David Gilchrist is a goalie on the Detroit Red Wlngs. Frank Zuleba stars on a New
York Roller Derby leam.
Tops in entertainment is the Be-Bop Club, owned by Richard Krolewski. His floor-show
acts are headlined by Richard and his accordion, 'Gerald Bock on the dhums, and that cute
chorus girl, Virginia Diez. On the cultured level, Vlolet Thomas sings at the Metropolitan
Opera House under the-hzfme of Violeta Maria Popocateptl.
Tomorrow is but a few years from today. The modest predictions that have been written
here may, in those few years. become reality.
