- - -I The mission of USS FITZGERALD CDDG 627 is to conduct prompt, sustained combat operations at sea, in support of U.S. national policy. She is equipped to operate in a high-density, multi-threat envi- ronment as an integral member ofa carrier battle group, surface action group or underway replenishment group. In addition to her own selfdefense capabilities in anti-airwarfare CAAWI,anti-submarine warfare iASWl,anti-surface warfare KASUWI, FITZGERALD can effectively provide local area protection to the battle group, surface action group, and other ships. FITZGERALD is equipped with the world's most sophisticated weaponry systems. She employs the ANXSPY- ID phased array radar, which incorporates significant advances in the detection capabilities ofthe AEGIS Weapons System, particularly in its resistance to enemy electronic countermeasures CECMJ. Using SPY- ID and her MARK 99 fire Control System, FITZGERALD can guide her vertically launched Standard Missiles to intercept hostile aircraft and missiles at ex- tended ranges. To provide point defense against hostile airtargets, FITZGERALD is equipped with the Block I upgrade to the Phalanx Close In Weapons System ICIWSJ. FITZGERALD is also equipped with the Navy's latest ASUW Combat Systems. Land attack cruise missile strike capability is provided byTomahawk missiles, which are launched from her Mark 41 Vertical Launching System iVLSI.Her shorter range Harpoon anti-shipping cruise missiles have a range in excess of65 nautical miles. The 51 U54 caliber gun,in conjunction with the Mark 34 Gun Weapons System, is an anti-surface weapon which can also be used for close-in air contacts or to sup port forces ashore with Naval Gunfire Support CNGFSI. Finally, FlTZGERALD's AN!SQQ-89 integrated ASW suite is the most advanced anti-submarine warfare system in the world today. The ANXSQR-I 9 Tactical Array Sonar CTACTASI provides extremely long range passive detection of enemy submarines and the ANXSQS-53C hull-mounted sonar is used to actively and passively detect and localize submarine contacts. FITZGERALD also has the capability to support the SH-60B LAMPS Mark Ill helicopter which can use a tactical data link to the ship for sup- port in anti-submarine operations, as well as conducting over-the-horizon targeting missions. Six MARK 32 surface vessel torpedo tubes round out the anti-submarine package of FITZGERALD.These systems are supple- mented by the SLQ-32Vl2J Electronic Warfare Suite, which provides for passive detection and permits the launching of decoy countermeasures. Propelled by four quick-response General Electric LM-2500 Gas Turbine Engines coupled to two controllable, reverse pitch QCRPI propellers, FITZGERALD has tremendous maneuverability and a top speed in excess on 30 knots. Her expert engineers also provide the ship with electricity, fresh water, heating and air conditioning facilities. FITZGERALD matches maximum survivability with her potent offensive capability. In the ARLEIGH BURKE Class,all- steel construction is used. Extensive top-side armor is placed around vital combat systems and machinery spaces, and a new large-waterplane area hull from significantly improves seakeeping ability.Acoustic, infrared and radar signatures have been reduced, and vital shipboard systems are hardened against electromagnetic pulse and over-pressure damage. A compre- hensive Collective Protection System guards against nuclear, chemical or biological agents.State-of-the-art propulsion and damage control systems are managed by an all new data multiplexing transmission system. Home to a crew of over 270, FITZGERALD has most services associated with a small town at sea, including dining, banking,ATM, laundry, Post Office and shopping facilities, over 10,000 line items ofspare parts and a barber shop.A marvel ofmodern technology and engineering, FITZGERALD is a powerful instrument of state in the service of her nation, capable ofsustaining herself at sea for months at a time. FITZGERALD is the premier warship designed to carry out the U.S. Navy's missions today and well into the 21 st Century.
