Mother Jo ' s Words of Wisdom: Don ' t pick your face when you ' re stoned. You know how when you ' re high you can get compulsive about things, so if you start to pick your face — even one little zit, keep your hands off. Without question, that one it has to have at least three neighbors skulking about somewhere; and even if you say to yourself that you ' ll stop after you get those, you know you ' re in trouble. Invariably, the neighbors have neighbors, and you ' ll be in front of the mirror for hours. You ' ll look like a strawberry before you ' re done. So keep that in mind the next time you light up — leave your face alone — even if you have an assured bulls-eye on the dorm mirror target — don ' t do it. If you want something to keep you occupied for a time, think about your tongue for a few minutes. Better yet, think about not thinking about your tongue. The whole mess is attached to your mouth somehow, so you can be sure it won ' t fall out the next time you open your mouth. But then there ' s no assurance it will go back in cither. There is always the chance that your tongue will swell up and block your breathing, but I wouldn ' t give that too much concern. The only time I knew of that happening was when a guy I knew had some super mix of some Colombians that caused everything to swell up. You can imagine what that was like. I tell you. The poor dear didn ' t know WHAT to take care of first. By the time you ' re sure your tongue is in the right place you will have probably developed quite an oral fixation, and the next question is what to put in it. Well, I ' m not going to tell you what to wrap your mouth around, but if your skin is anything like mine, keep away from the junk food. Eat a few carrots or celery — they can be just as satisfying as the Snickers bar that ' s calling you from the cupboard. Ri-i-i-ght. Well go ahead and eat it anyway. But if it gives you zits, remember what Mother Jo said — keep your mitts off! INTERSTaTE ||| UNITED 1R o BRINGING YOU THE ' 78 SAX ' A Editor Joanne Curtis Assistant Editor Cindy Flinn Word-smiths Cathy London Claire Perron Layouts Now that you have almost finished the 1978 SAXIFRAGE, we do hope you enjoyed it. It would be a real bummer if we have been busting our buns in vain for the past year. As you can tell, we tried several new things with this volume — some you may have liked and some you didn ' t. To those of you who hated the whole thing, we ' re sure Randy Newman could find a few things to say about you too. However, we really don ' t want to hear any bitching about what was or was not included. Next year, or the next time you are going to be in a yearbook, get your asses down to the office and join the staff. Then it will be the way you want it. This book is the way we want it, and we do feel it is an honest reflection of the way of life at FSC. There are many people we would like to thank for their help and encouragement in putting this book together — especially Dave, Sue, Reb, and the Cribbage Players next door. And a very special thank you to Chuck for his patience and for doing all the cooking this year. ' - « Jte. mmmi I IH WM To give you more for your money, the 1978 SAXIFRAGE also functions as a backgammon board. Merely supply your own tokens (pennies and nickles work well — 15 of each) and dice (two pair preferably). Open this cover leaving all the pages to one side, turn the book over and you ' re ready to begin. It may help if you photo-copy these two pages so you won ' t keep dumping your game to check the rules. THE GAME OF BACKGAMMON Arrangement of the tables and position of the men at the start of the game is shown in the diagram. The division line in the center of the board (in this case, the spine of the book) is called the " Bar " . Each player throws one dice, the higher number winning first play. The players then play in turn, each throwing two dice. Nickle men and Penny men move in opposite directions. The route of each player ' s men is from his opponent ' s inner table to the opponent ' s outer table, then to tb.e player ' s own outer table to his inner table. THE OBJECT OF THE GAME is for a player to move all his men around the board into his own " inner table " and then to " bear " them off the board by throws of the dice. For each throw, a player moves his men a number of points corresponding to the number thrown. MOVES: A player can move one man for the total of the throw or two separate men, one for each number on the dice. A player cannot enter, pause, or stop on a point containing two or more of his opponent ' s men. If, at any time, he is unable to enter or move, except on such a point, he loses his turn. NOTE: When moving one man the total of the two numbers on the dice, each number must be counted separately. That is, if 5 and 3 are thrown, and a point five spaces from the starting point is occupied by two opposing men, the player cannot move his man the 5 thrown by adding the 3 and calling it 8; he must count " 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, " and " 1, 2, 3 " and the 5 and 3 points must be open or holding his own men. Any part of the throw which cannot be played is lost. Thus if in the above instance, where 5 and 3 are thrown, and the player can only move on the 3, the 5 is lost and the 3 completes the play. Players, however, are always obliged to move the full number of their throws when possible. The men pass freely from one side of the board to the other, along the routes explained by the diagram, over all points, and over each other without regard to the number of men that may be on a point. There is no limit to the number of men of the same player that can occupy a point together; and however many, it is usual to keep them in a row extending along and even beyond the point, although it is more desirable to place one on top of another when more than five are on one point. DOUBLETS: A doublet, both dice alike, counts double the ordinary throw. A player throwing a doublet may move or enter, or both, one, two, three, or four men; the doublet counting the same as if four dice were thrown, and the player entitled to move, or enter, for each of the four dice. For example — you throw a double 5: You may move one man 20 points, or you may move two men 10 points each, or you may move four men 5 points each. You must pause at the count of every 5. HITTING BLOTS: A " BLOT " is a point occupied by a single man. If a player moves a man to a point which is occupied by a single opponent man, he is said to " Hit a Blot " . The man hit or blotted is taken off the board and placed on the bar, and must be played into the opponent ' s inner table on the next throw. This is called " Entering " . A player cannot move any other man while he has a blotted man off the board. BEARING OFF: When either player succeeds in playing all of his men into his inner table, he starts to throw off men from points correspond- ing to dice thrown. A player can either move a man or throw off. When casting a number higher than any point covered, a man from the highest point may be thrown off but he cannot throw off a man if the point indicated is vacant and there is any man on a higher counting point. If while bearing off, a man is hit, he goes to the bar and must re-enter in the usual way, travel all around the board to his inner table before more men can be taken off. WINNING: The player who first bears all his men off the board wins the game. ■ W OUTER TABLE WHITE W INNER TABLE B OUTER TABLE B INNER TABLE BLACK 6t 9Q61ttX68
