SAX 3 : l : H Mi : Kz 0 PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS STATE COLLEGE FITCHBURG MASSACHUSETTS THE SAXIFRAGE FOREWORD The purpose of this yearbook is to serve each of you as a record of our individual ex- periences and past college accomplishments at Fitchburg State College. These experiences and accomplishments have been made possible through scholar- ship, sportsmanship, leadership, and the de- velopment of personality. We gain these through organizations, classes, and the many events which have prepared us for service to community and mankind. We, the staff, have tried to gather as many of these components as possible so that in future years the Saxifrage will serve as a re- minder of our capacities and endowments. The Editor I ' " ■ i.. U,. -, - r Vf r, i i « President ' s Message to the Class of 1961 We are entering upon an era which will test to the utmost the capacity of our democracy to cope with the gravest problems of modern times - and on a scale never yet attempted in all the history of the world. T fe must lift ourselves as promptly as we can to a new and much higher level of interest, of attention, of hard work, of care, of concern, of expenditure, and of dedication to the education of the American child. It has been said that essentially the ultimate test of a good teacher is to inspire a child to think. Grasp the challenge before you with the vigor and enthusiasm of your generation for your college has con- fidence and faith that you are sufficient to the task ahead. What better asset could you possess? Ralph F. Weston, President » - w 4 h£ I fi if v. s ■ m — w m f ! it h v r • • » « 4 ,4 « % « . • tx»4$m + ■-• The development and expansion of our college both intellectually and physically has been the constant concern of our president. President Weston ' s sincere interest in the college and its stu- dents, his perseverance, and his vision have pro- vided and will provide for us an education and an educational plant of which we can be proud. " 1 We pause— with a laugh, with a smile, With a tear, we recall the rapidly disappearing year. The memories that drift upon our minds Are so fresh and clear that they are hardly Memories yet; but time will dim them, Even now, as we turn these crisp white pages For the first time and sniff the pleasant odor of fresh ink; Even now, the things we see are changed, And, being changed, are gone. Here in our yearbook lie the events that shall become memories- Events caught as they hurried across the narrow threshhold of the present Into the twilight unreal of the past. There are things we may find to be strikingly bitter- Others unbelievably sweet. Time will dull the memories we have recorded here Where happy days are buried. We may look upon the face of one we loved And feel no pain; we may look upon the face Of one we loathed And try to recall his name. Our SAXIFRAGE is the only memory we have Of years already spent- Years of laughter, of love, of study, of tears, And now, " To the sacred Halls of Ivy Every voice will bid farewell, And shimmer off in twilight Like the old vesper bell.
