Will an epifaph have fo be wriffen for our club? Is fhe council going fo be as generous and meef fhe demands of our budgef? Where will I gef fhe money fo pay for a blanlcef fax? To be very frufhful, in fhe beginning, I was a liffle in doubf abouf if all myself. Imbued wifh fhe faifh you had placed in me, if was farfhesf from my mind fo lef you down . l was defermined fo do all I could fo deserve fhe honor of being presidenf. Long ago, I formulafed a principle which has been a guide, nof only in living, buf in enjoying a beffer life. If is fo malce somefhing worfhwhile ouf of everyfhing I do, whefher if be large or small, difficulf or easy, and fo find enioymenf in every faslc I assume. I believe every member of fhe council despife his own misgivings, followed fhaf same policy and gained much from fhe worlc. We added immeasurably fo our knowledge of gov- ernmenf, parliamenfary law, and fhe nafure of polifics. Human nafure wifh ifs foibles and failings, was an inferesfing sfudy. We came fo know and undersfand each ofher beffer, we learned abouf fhe college and fhe many problems fhaf hifherfo had appeared as roufine maf- fers fo us. We were chagrined fo learn 'rhaf foo many of us were non-fhinlcing individuals nof concerned wifh school affairs. Thaf condifion has improved and will confinue fo improve. Dicfa+ors -fhaf was used as an uncomplimenfary ferm for council members , earlier in fhe school year. We were held responsible for 'rhe Freshman Recepfiong we were charged wifh conducfing a gigolo bureau: we were branded as being faculfy dominafed. I wonder why no one fhoughf we mighf have been fhe evil genius behind fhe hurricane. This crificism was nof a challenge fo us fo wage baffle, buf an incenfive fo go ahead wifh our 'raslc of affempf- ing fo build a firm foundafion for our sfudenf co-operafive sociefy. Affer proving ourselves af fhe firsf associafion meefing, fhe affifude of fhe whole school changed. The word Dicfafors was no longer a by-word. Realizing fhaf our own en- deavors had secured complefe sfudenf faifh, and had overfhrown fhe era when disfrusf was rampanf, our inifial success acfed as increased mofivafion. Wifh fhe honor of holding an execufive posifion, usually come cerfain affendanf inflic- fions, and worries. By-laws, amendmenfs, consfifufional policies, sfafionery, passboolcs, Sax , Winfer Carnival, Freshman Recepfion, nofices, prinfing, meefings, reporfs, ad infinifum. For- funafely, all did nof come af once. Every successful accomplishmenf was an incenfive fo greafer efforf. In lisfing some of fhe agenda, picfures came before me, one of a council meefing. ln my mind I see some of fhe individual mannerisms: such as fhe shaking of a head-enfirely wrong, a nod wifh a smile-happiness over a rafified bi+ of legislafion: someone on his feef wifh a warning finger as a foreboding of danger engendered by some policy abouf fo be adopfed. On fhe ofher hand, a scowl on someone's brow and fhe words, You can'f do +ha+ , l fhinlr, efc., Anofher flash-fhe presidenf, upsef by a member's affifude of boredom and inaffenfion calls upon fhe individual who immediafely perlcs up and surprises all wifh a helpful suggesfion. Also, anofher picfure of your council, upsef and disappoinfed because fhe quorum, according fo fhe consfifufion, is nine, and only eighf are presenf. Democracy became much more fhan a symbol fo us. We reioiced af ifs benefifsg we freffed and fumed over ifs cumbersome characferisfics of red-fape, and delay. If was diffi- culf course, buf I believe we had an invaluable experience and gained considerable from if nof fo menfion a few C's on our cards. There could be no more opporfune fime fhan fhis fo express +o every member and officer of fhe I938-39 council my sincere and deep appreciafion for fheir accomplishmenfs: fhe hours which fhey sacrificed: and fhe fine spirif of co-operafion fha? was displayed during fheir enfire ferm of office. gifif Llleu iDofmin-..- Presidenf, I938-I939 SlUIHNlEHHI1lHHlIVlEHlINEI OFFICERS Presidenl'-Ellen Dormin Secreiary-Rufh Lagsdin Vice Pres. - Wm.
