I came In America front Germany. I then had the wonderful opportunity of attending an American high sr-hool and hot-onring part of the student body. Furthermore, this meant getting together with Xmerit-an boys and girls. learning "their" language, and becoming acquainted with the American system of education. During these three months I had time to explore this North American continent a little. But although I traveled a few thousand miles, I did not even see all of the New England States. Here traveling from one state- to another is hardly worth mentioning, hut, according to European ideas of distance, it is like traveling from Germany to France or Switzerland, and would be considered quite a journey. After my adventures in the New World, which is so much admired by the Old World, the "tropical" summer passed. Finally the schools opened their doors again and swallowed thousands and thousands of pupils, and among them was I, as excited as on my first day of school so many years ago. I was a rather confused, lost pupil in the huge Fitchburg High School building, constantly dropping books while rushing up and down the stairs and along the endless corridors, and peering doubtfully to discover the location of the classrooms. By observing the other students I soon found out what was done and how things were done. During the three months I went to Fitchburg High School I became so used to everything and everybody belonging to it that now, as the time to say good-bye has come, I am parting "mit einem lachenden und einem weinenden Auge," as we say in German. Having enjoyed my school-time most of all during my stay in the United States, I am also proud that I attended Fitchburg High School, not only because it has an excellent football team, but also because it is a good, well-organized school with teachers who know that humor and heart belong to teaching and create a better understanding between them and their students. I want to thank Mr. Woodbury for having let me attend this school, all my teachers for their effort and their interest in me, and finally all my classmates for having welcomed me among them and for having given me their comradeship. To you seniors, I wish a very successful graduation. My thoughts will be ever with you, although my home lies "beyond the horizon." In gratitude.
