'-....S - Farewell To The Old Building They have torn it down. Brick by brick, plank by plank, wall after wall - - it has fallen. - - Not the spirit, the ideals, the accomplishments, nor the grandeur, but the brick, the mortar, the planks. There never was a time when so proudly the citizens of our progressive little city viewed the rising from piles of lumber and masonry of what seemed then to be the "last word" in Temples of Learning, Children gazed with wondering eyes, youths and maidens lingered with longing looks and feverish contemplation. At last it was finished. Gloriously it gleamed in the sunlight, and soon its stately halls echoed to the sound of hurrying footsteps. Youthful chattering arose amid the stern commands of militant instructors. Day after day, this drama continued, slowly shaping young lives and helping to decide their destinies. The students of these times often listened at their firesides to fascinating stories of early Findlay school life .... how in 1827 a hewed log house eighteen feet square was erected on the corner of Crawford and East Streets. The Court house and churches were used for school, until, in 1884, a brick building was constructed on West Lincoln Street, at a cost of 320,000 ln 1807, another building, on East Sandusky Street, was finished, and cost 335,000 The building which we have just removed was completed in 1901, and was financed by a tax of 350,000 lt is only natural to rake in the ashes of the past. From these ashes we often retrieve nuggets of golden deeds, treasures of serious thought, examples of self-sacrifice, devotion to worthwhile causes Relics, treasures, antiques, the prattle of a child, the vision of a face, or a picture - - these are the things that influence our lives, and cause us to pause for a moment to determine true worth. Findlay 1-ligh, yours was a peaceful mission, dedicated to the cause of equality of humanity, love of country, diffusion of knowledge, and the advancement of our community. While in our midst you served your purpose admirably, yet, after much deliberation and many tears and regrets, you were consigned to ruin. But as we mourn the old and exalt the new, we become aware of a solemn duty, for, as we go forth in life's hard and exacting school, we will look back and see other eager faces searching for truths and looking for guidance. They will look to us and to our lives to decide whether all this is really worth their efforti EIGHT ADMINISTRATICDN MR. F. L. KINLEY B. Sc. Heidelberg M. A. Believing that this project should present the same degree of educational experience as other activities, the sponsor and the administration determined to make the l939 Trojan a student production. Reversing the procedure of other years, the staff planned the book and then submitted it to the engravers for criticism. All informal photographs were taken, the plates developed, and the pictures printed lmore than 200 of theml by our own students: all pictures were mounted by the staff,- all correspondence concerning the annual was handled by studentsf the soliciting, checking, and collecting of advertising from the local merchants laccounting for more than one-half of the cost of the bookl was likewise handled by students. The results have been most gratifying. The engraver and others who have Worked with the book declare it to be an excellent product. Despite the fact that this book is larger than the 1938 Trojan, the budget has been carefully observed, and the plates have gone to the printer ahead of schedule. All this has of course meant hours of planning on the part of the staff and the sponsor. To these students and to Mr. Humphrey I express my apprecia- tion for their most excellent cooperation and extend my congratulations for a task well done. -G. R. CoNs'r1EN.
